I am now part of the Mazey Eddings fan club.
Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake was absolutely delightful. I was fully invested in Lizzie from the start. She was endearing, badass, and one of my favourite heroines I've come across lately. Lizzie and Rake's romance felt captivating and real, I loved watching them figure things out together.
This book had excellent flirting, great plot, and neurodiverse rep. Highly recommend for contemporary romance fans!
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a solid rom-com. If you're a fan of the series then you'll know what to expect. While it never got cringey, I did find myself doing an internal eyeroll more than once. I would recommend this to anyone who likes the rom-com genre. It won't be your favorite but I did have a good time. Thanks to net galley for giving me the chance to listen to this in exchange for an honest review.
LOVE LOVE LOVED the e-book and the audio was no different! Take everything you love about the story and the characters and add in Rake's australian accent and you get perfection!
I typically am not a huge fan of the surprise pregnancy trope, but in this book, it just works! Lizzy is imperfectly perfect and will be so relatable for so many readers. It is not often that I connect so much with a characters feelings like I did when reading this book. And it has all the steamy scenes!
Lizzy's discovery of her fullest self as she faced her insecurities head on had me bawling and will leave me thinking about this book for a long time.
Mazey Eddings has absolutely cemented herself as an auto-buy author and I CANNOT WAIT for what she does next!
This was a fun, quirky story! I loved the audio, especially since Rake has an Australian accent! Lizzie is a mess...she is impulsive and irrational due to her ADHD, but also loveable! She meets up with Rake, professional, serious, and heartbroken. They end up creating Lizzie's Best Mistake. The rest of the story is adorable. I got a lot of insight on ADHD and what it would be like to have a person like Lizzie around. Thank you, Net Galley and the publisher, for an advanced copy of this audiobook!
Mazey Eddings writes with wit and humor of the love life that develops between Lizzie and Rake, but which is strewn with challenges and obstacles, such as living with adult ADHD and mental health. Eddings did such a great job writing out the struggles of Lizzie that really allowed her readers to immerse fully into destigmatizing neurodivergence in positive and affirming ways. The characters where cute and funny, and the storyline/plot was so much more than the normal romance. It was a steamy, charming, fun and chaotic book all in the best way.
I had fun spending time with Lizzie and Rake! This book is the second book in the Brush with Love series but it reads perfectly fine as a stand-alone novel. Fair warning, things between them start off pretty dang instant and steamy, so if you don’t like insta love, I don’t know if this would be a book for you. But the insta love worked out well with the storyline
𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: toxic family, unexpected pregnancy, abortion
I really enjoyed this one! As part of the series that started with A BRUSH WITH LOVE (which I loved), this one wasn’t AS good, but still enjoyable. The plot is largely unbelievable, and honestly depending on what mood I’m in, it doesn’t bother me. But with this one I felt my eyes roll a few times. However, I enjoyed the message this book conveyed, mostly via the main female character and her struggles with ADHD. The audio was extra good since the male lead had an Australian accent. Overall a solid read and I’ll keep reading this series! Can’t wait for the next one.
I received this ARC from Net Galley. This was my first read form this author and I will definitely be reading more books from her! I fell in love with these characters! This rom com had me laughing each step of the character's journey together. Even with this light hearted story, the author was able to talk about importance of mental health, which is refreshing to see in romance books.
Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake is the second book in A Brush with Love series, but it can be read as a standalone story. Lizzie has serious ADHD and her parents have never understood her. They are disappointed with everything she has done and don't hesitate to let her know it. Lizzie is not into a serious relationship, but she has not problems finding male companionship. She meets Rake, a sexy Australian, in a bar and they have a one night stand, okay, two nights, but then he heads home. Unfortunately, he leaves behind a pregnant Lizzie. Lizzie wants him to know she is pregnant and intends on having the child, so he picks up his life, transfers to a job in the US and plans to co-parent the child. They end up living together in an apartment, and the heat and sizzle pick up even more.
This book had my emotions all over the place. I was not always happy with Lizzie's decisions, but she didn't deserve to be treated the way her parents treated her. She was very down on herself at times, although she also loved her life, her job and her decision to have her child. There were several poignant moments between Lizzie and Rake when they shared secrets and situations in their life that they had not shared with others. I loved seeing Lizzie's brother finally come to terms with his own relationship with Lizzie. Along with those moments there are also a lot of laughs, some great banter and a lot of talk of and action that were very explicit. It definitely had my face turning red and I skimmed those. Being a retired educator, I saw people with varying degrees of ADHD and I felt that Lizzie was portrayed in a realistic way. Those with ADHD have it for life, so seeing her portrayed as an adult is something that is not common in my reading. I also liked that she was successful in her life, she had a job she loved and was good at it, also something very important and relatable. Overall, this is a fun, contemporary romance that deals with mental health, family relationships, parental expectations, unplanned pregnancy, taking responsibility, romance and a lot of steam. I did a read/listen with this book and it was easier to skim parts while reading. The audiobook was narrated by Summer Morton and Will Peters. This team gave voice to the main characters and made the book come alive for me. I enjoyed both formats, and recommend either depending on your preference.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! Mazey Eddings had me laughing out loud multiple times at the beautiful, spicy, chaotic story of Lizzie and Rake.
The representation of neurodiverse/adult ADHD was done well. I enjoyed Lizzie's character arc in fully accepting herself and her neurodiversity. Also, can we talk about that air mattress scene?? I love a good one bed troupe and this scene was just *chefs kiss* good.
As I received the audio version of this book, I will note that I didn't care for the male narrator's voice for Lizzie.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio, Netgalley, and Mazey Eddings for providing me an audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lizzie!!! I knew I would love Lizzie's story as soon as I heard her yelling for Harper to leave her in the streets after she fell during the grand gesture scene in A Brush With Love. I thought the portrayal of this ADHD heroine was well done, loved the side characters and wished that we had an erotic bakery where I live. I absolutely adored the audiobook version (hello sexy Australian accented Rake!). The only thing I wish this book would've had more of was le bebe! Thanks to Netgalley and the SMP Romance for the free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
The narrators did a great job and I loved the energy and chemistry they brought to. the characters. My only critique would be that Rake's chapters weren't completely in an aussie accent
LIZZIE BLAKE’S BEST MISTAKE by Mazey Eddings is the second title from of the Brush with Love series, but it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel.
This book is about a one night stand that turns into a beautiful love story. Sure, it’s not likely in the real world, but I found myself rooting for Lizzie and Rake, wanting them to be together despite there efforts to suppress their feelings. This book is full of moments that made me laugh and some that made me tear up. This is a marvelous must-read and I highly recommend it.
Very cute feel good story about a couple who find themselves in a tricky situation. Overall I enjoyed it and thought the story was cute. The narrator did a great job as well.
I and many others hate the pregnancy trope. It’s just weird to me😂 BUT I didn’t mind it AS much in this book because Mazey is so good at writing. There were just a few things just made me feel eh about it. It did take me a few times to get through it once it took the time I really did like it. I think Lizzy is hilarious and her and Rakes relationship was so great. Even though I wish some parts would’ve sat better with me this was a crazy whip lashing ride that I’m glad to have read.
Let me start by saying that pregnancy trope isn't my favorite, but I was really
interested in this book because it has a neurodivergent FMC. Specifically, Lizzie has ADHD. I was really interested to see how the author would handle it!
I think overall, it was executed very well. I found Lizzie very likable, very relatable. I found Rake's patience and genuine interest to be sweet. While the pregnancy was part of this story, I didn't find
myself overwhelmed by details about it. It was an underlying story, allowing the relationship and Lizzie's growth/acceptance to be the main focal point of the
book.
TW: topics of abortion, toxic family (emotional abuse), and ableism.
Also mention of vomiting...just in case that is a trigger for anyone.
Thank you @macmillan.audio and @netgalley for the opportunity to review this audiobook!
This book was sweet and spicy, very entertaining! I don’t typically gravitate toward the accidental pregnancy trope but I enjoyed this story regardless. Lizzie’s character was really amazing ADHD rep that felt refreshing to read. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for early access to this title.
I was so excited to see another book by Mazey Eddings that I rushed to request without reading anything of what it was about. This was my bad - I don’t love pregnancy stories so this wasn’t the right read for me. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance reading copy.
Lizzie Blake was a super heartwarming installment into Edding’s romcom series. I did enjoy this installment more than A Brush with Love, although it was more serious at time (as the subject matter suggests). The love interest was very sweet and swoon worthy (although his name was interesting), and Lizzie was a super intriguing character.
Overall a fun romcom but somewhat forgettable.
Oh I loved this book! Mental health rep (ADHD), Australian MMC, adorable nickname. I had to take a star off my rating because the pregnancy trope is dumb lol. But Mazey made it work and I loved it. Lizzie is hilarious, I love that she’s a baker, and she has such a great group of friends around her. RAKE THOUGH. If there ever was a perfect man, Rake Is pretty darn close.
Lizzie and Rake are quite the duo! I liked this more than Mazey’s first book. A two night stand turned into a surprise pregnancy - what’s not to love? Both Rake and Lizzie are unlikely parents to be but so lovable.
Mazey again writes a character struggling with a very real, every day challenge - ADHD. She nails how it affects Lizzie’s every waking moment. She makes it relatable, raw, and very real for the reader to understand how adhd affects one’s daily life, their view of themself, their confidence. I love Lizzie as a heroine as she crushes her life goals by not running from what makes her different. I love Rake’s character for how he loves her for her chaotic brain not in spite of it. He has his own relationship challenges that he has to get himself over.
I just loved seeing them work through their struggles. And omg the erotic bakery had me laughing out loud. Is this story probable I’m real life - who knows. But is the day to day in the life of an adhd person brought to life in a relatable and respectful way - absolutely!
Thank you netgalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for the audio ARC
