Black Paradox is an unnerving tale of four strangers coming together to complete a suicide a pact...what follows is a series of horrible and unimaginable events that lead to surreal consequences. I loved the twist and turns within this wicked tale and felt a true sense of doom closing in whilst reading. Ito is a true master of horror.
While I'm always searching for the feeling of reading Uzumaki or The Enigma of Amigara Fault for the first time (read: truly freaked out), this collection of Junji Ito's may not reach that level of horror but it does feel like the most cohesive of his short story collections. I also enjoyed that most of the horror in this collection was sci-fi based, an interesting change-up from his usual stories.
4.5/5- rounded up to 5 for this review
I've read about 9 books that Junji Ito has released, and so far it seems like he never misses. Almost everything I've read has been an anthology, and his non anthologies I've read are segmented into self contained stories. This is the first book I've read from him that was it's own story, divided up into consecutive chapters. It was a refreshing change of pace for me, and hope that the remaining backlist has more of this format. As always the story was wonderfully creepy and the illustrations were beautifully horrific. I enjoyed the sci-fi elements in the plot. I would have loved for this to be longer, with the characters more fleshed out. I just wanted to spend a bit more time in the bizarre world of Junji Ito.
Thank you to NetGalley and VIZ Media for the advanced copy of this book!
This one started out as I be thing and quickly morphed into a sci-cli-fi. I didn’t expect the plot twist but thought it was intelligent and spoke volumes about our energy dependence. Overall I would recommend but it wasn’t my favorite by an author I have grown to appreciate. Thank you to the publisher for providing me with this drc available through netgalley.
Thank you for the opportunity to read Junji ito’s Black Paradox. His titles always do well in store so I will be definitely carrying it. Chrissy
Vicious circular paths! One minute you’re discovering the mysterious suicide pact when all of a sudden things get turned around. Paradox indeed. Junji's dark tale weaves its way through the four main characters and never misses a beat. Twists and turns. Intense scenes with a mysterious new source of energy….or is it?
Highly enjoyed this book, and it’s themes of life, death, and the morality of sacrificing self for progress. Although, I am fully aware of Ito’s content, it could be a bit dark for middle and high school readers.
I've been a fan of Junji Ito's work for a really long time, so I was thrilled to see this book on NetGalley! I'm so glad that I got a copy of it to review, because each new graphic novel is a new look into a little slice of horror.
BLACK PARADOX focuses on a quartet of people who have decided that they are done with life. Although they decide to end it for good, it turns out that fate has a different idea of what will happen to them next. (This is seriously the least spoiler-y way for me to describe it - it's really tough to talk about what happens!) In the usual Ito fashion, the story takes twists and turns that you won't expect, and ends in a way that will stick with you for a long time.
Although I'm mostly focusing on children's and teens' literature these days, I always have to make time for my favorite scary stories. BLACK PARADOX is not one to miss if you too enjoy Ito's work. I highly recommend this book!
This is classic Junji Ito. Body horror, paranoia, and that one character that's way more extra than the role necessarily calls for, but is all the better for it. I enjoyed JUST about everything -- the only exception being I wish Dr. Suga had gotten some kind of horrifically bad ending.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! The latest release from Junji Ito, Black Paradox, tells the multi-part tale of four strangers who made a suicide pact and the horrorific results of their attempt. It's classically creepy and disturbing in traditional Junji Ito style and I would highly recommend to fans of his (and also to horror fans in general).
This was fine. It's got the typically gorgeous/disturbing Ito art, and the typically underwhelming plot and character development. It was a neat enough little morality story, though, in the end.
I LOVED this, this was so unusual and spooky , even for Junji Ito. This is definitely one of his best horror comics all around.
Definitely one of my new favorites from Junji Ito! I think this story will stick with me for a while. The characters and plot were all so intriguing. I highly recommend this as a good intro to Junji Ito too.
