I like the fact that this book has realistic elements in the fact that you understand one event can change your life forever. How envy can destroy not only your life but that of others. It was well written but didn't enjoy the characters

Y2K was an anticipated event that many faced with fear and dread as to what would happen to our computerized world! Working in an environment where anticipation could have been quite a disaster for us...I was really excited to read this book. My anticipation was not well-met. While there were places that caught my attention in remembrance, the characters fell a little flat and the storyline just did not pull me in as I would have hoped. While the book will/would be a worthy read for many, it didn't hit all the right spots for enjoyment for me. Thank you to Celestial Eyes Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

The description for this book had my hopes high. However, the characters were unappealing to me and the sexism a turn off. There wasn’t much depth to the story to keep my attention.

Ugh. I really didn’t enjoy. Nothing was wrong with the writing I felt there wasn’t really a plot or point in the book. And I was border until the 10 minute at the very end.

I mean, it's a modern-ish retelling (sort of) of The Great Gatsby, but set in the 1990s with a focus towards the end of the century during the Y2K panic. Steve and John are friends and developers at the same company in the 1990s when the focus to prevent the disaster that is Y2K begins. We follow, from Steve's perspective, their friendship and rivalry over the next few years, including job changes, John's marriage, and a growing circle of friends. This friendship/rivalry comes to a head at a New Years party in 1999 where, apparently, everyone is capable of spilling there most personal political and religious beliefs to people they just met, but no one is able to ask their best friend for years what the hell is going on and why they're acting a certain way, or when that fails, straight up stop talking to them.

Similar to Gatsby, this is a book about crappy people being crappy. They follow and spread gossip, are petty, are overly competitive, and can't seem to be happy unless someone close to them is in pain. If you like books like that, you'll probably like this one. I personally wasn't a huge fan of The Great Gatsby to begin with and the new setting and characters didn't do much for me, so this was just ok. There's nothing new or particularly creative about this one.

I have read some reviews about the misogyny and while I agree, I also vaguely remember the 90s being like that, so I thought it was pretty appropriate for the time period.

Thank you Netgalley for letting me read and review this book. Many are Invited it a Great Gatsby retelling. The book was disappointing for me, and I didn't enjoy it. The writing style was okay, but it was a little basic and just not for me. I didn't like any of the characters or the interactions they had with each other.

At the request of John Goertz, a group of technology managers and executives gather in a conference room. Listening to the presentation is Steve Galanos, who is suspicious of Goertz’s approach and the dramatic way he describes the problem. Goertz tries to convince his audience that a disaster awaits them unless they immediately address the two-digit year in the company’s distributed systems and compiled code. It’s 1994, well before anyone has heard of the term, Y2K.

A promotion to run the newly-created year 2000 compliance program earns John more skepticism and envy from Steve, yet the two have much in common and soon become good friends. A few years later, John leaves for a startup and their lives trend in different directions.

By the time John cashes out from a successful IPO, gets married, and buys a house in Los Gatos, his friendship with Steve has waned. It’s at John’s housewarming party where latent animosity and lingering distrust finally come to a head.

Thank you NetGalley for giving me this book for an honest review. I thought this book was decent but the lack of solid character development and plot left me dry. I was thinking that the book would be a decent retelling of The Great Gatsby but this leaves me wanting to read the original work instead.

I read 38% of this book in one sitting and then decided I didn't want to finish.
None of the characters are likeable, especially the narrator. And they not even the kind of unlikeable characters with any redeeming qualities -- I just truly did not care in the least about any of them.

Living through the Y2K panic, I thought that would be interesting but I was immediately bored. Honestly, I was skim reading bits of this just to see if it picks up.

I really didn’t like many characters in this book so I was not really invested. I am sure there are some who will enjoy this story much more than me.

I was thinking this book was going to be a bit more sci-fi than Mystery/Romance relationship story. Overall this was a decent story with not a whole lot of action happening. The most interesting part of the story was the discussion of Y2K, but even that fell a bit short.
I was generous with 3 stars, but this one should be a bit more of a 2.5 as characters weren't even likable.
If you like a simple story about a guy and his jealousies then you might like this one. Otherwise, meh...

This was an amazing and completely engaging. I was invested from the very first chapter. The characters were complex. The plot was original.

Just an okay book. Nothing stood out in one way or another. I wish there had been more to it and maybe I would have liked it as much as it seems other reviewers did.

It was a solid read but nothing to write home about if you know what I mean.

The story and characters in this novel are dynamic and changing, which I appreciate in books that jump back and forth in their timelines. There was a fairly sizeable section of the book that just dealt with the "set-up", so be prepared that a slow build is incoming.

I struggled to get into this book. I tried for about 10%. I may pick it back up later. Thanks for the advanced copy! Sorry for the late review.

it starts out with a house party ending in tragedy and to say I was hooked is an understatement. I didn't realized it was a Great Gatsby retelling until I was finished. Looking back on it now, I can see a connection. What I enjoyed about the book is the world and how the character lived inside the early 2000s in the midst of a booming technology culture. I struggled staying interested until the end, but the bones of the story was interesting.

I loved the plot parallels with THE GREAT GATSBY. It is a quick read, and the drama unfolds quickly! I love how it read and enjoyed how fast pace the storyline was.

This book was a complete disappointment. It may just be I never loved The Great Gatsby but I tried to be open to the premise. Not recommended at all

It's December 1999. Despite the Y2K threat, Steve Galano attends a housewarming party for his friend John and wife Mary. But the evening ends in tragedies caused indirectly by Steve. The next day, he's left to pick up the pieces. But he's not the only responsible party.
This novel is quite disjointed and boring. The story line jumps around between plots. And characters are introduced in random ways. The passive voice also reduces engagement - a rewrite with active voice would make this novel 75% better.
I did like the last page, though - what a surprise!

This was a dnf for me. I couldn’t get into it. I had a hard time getting into the story but maybe I’ll try again at a later date. Thank you NetGalley for an arc.
