I am reviewing a copy of Out of the Shadows through Lagrange Books and Netgalley:

In Out of the Shadows you will hear the voices of nine remarkable American women soldiers wounded while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Each interview is based on hours of personal interviews, Out of the Shadows: Voices of American Women Soldiers pieces together the unique lives of these women who served side by side with their male counterparts in war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan.

Out of the Shadows honors the legacy and inconceivable sacrifice of each of these women. This tribute is meant to honor all of America's women soldiers, their inarguable bravery and heroism-and to lay bare for all the world to see the heart, courage, and sacrifices of the American Woman Soldier.

I give Out of the Shadows five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

The concept of the book to detail women soldier's experiences in a war zone is one not often explored.
Women were not allowed to serve in front line combat roles in the US until 2015 and I had hoped that this book covered some of those experiences. Sadly all the stories told were prior to 2015 and as such the roles were not front line roles. This does not diminish their service nor their courageousness and suffering at the hands of an enemy that preferred to hide than fight,.
Whilst I found the writing style easy enough to read, the constant cliched quotes such as "battle rattle" and "zero dark thirty" started to drive me to tears and added nothing to the story at all.
I came away disappointed with this book for several reasons.

I enjoy reading books about soldiers experience and this was no exception. Theses nine women's stories where heartbreaking and terrifying but all fought though their experience and come out the other side.

A fantastic read my only complete, would be I would liked to have a longer book with more stories hopefully there will be a follow up book in the future.
