An intense story of reunited love and the danger of a world changing dangerous biotoxin with no antidote. This story held my attention, and the author made Colt’s character believable as went through the various stages. I was wishing for Marena to be a little more caring at the beginning. The book is full of danger and action, which I love and I did overall enjoy the story.
Lisa Dodson makes a promising debut in the Harlequin Romantic Suspense line with SIX DAYS TO LIVE, a story which balances a satisfying romance with tense suspense from the very first chapter. While on a mission, Coulter McKendrick is injected with the Silent Night drug, a deadly poison, which will kill him in six days. His former fiancée, Marena, a biochemist, is the only person Coulter believes can save him, so he finds her and, together, they race against time to save him.
There are a lot of elements of this book that I enjoyed. I liked the main characters (who can resist a second chance-at-love) and I liked the fact that each of them was determined; especially Marena, whose resourcefulness made me hopeful that, despite the obstacles they face, everything would be alright. At the centre of this story is the lack of trust between Coulter and Marena. After he broke off their engagement, without explanation, it is difficult for Marena to trust him again. Eventually, we discover his reasoning, but realise that communication between a couple is extremely important. The journey to the conclusion is gripping, fast-paced and tense.
As I said earlier, SIX DAYS TO LIVE is a promising debut from Ms. Dodson and I look forward to reading more of this genre from her. While the premise is not original (shades of the television show 24), the story is well-constructed. The story is also well-researched and at no time did I doubt the authenticity of the scientific jargon. While the ‘heat’ could have been upped a notch, it did not lessen the nuances of the second chance romance.
I look forward to more of Ms. Dodson’s work in this genre and recommend it for lovers of romantic suspense. You won’t be disappointed.
Six Days to Live was a story that had all the intrigue, excitement and romance in it.
Thank you NetGalley for a great read.
While on a raid Coulter was injected with a poison known as Silent Night and will die in 6 days unless he can get the antidotes. Problem is there is none but he does know of one women who could probably pull it off Dr.Marena thing is he broke her heart he wasn't sure what was going to happen until he shows. Now she's on a mission to make an antidote while Coulter tries to keep them safe.
I really enjoyed this fast paced suspenseful read. I enjoyed the characters and getting to know them. There was a few point of views which kinda confused me at first but I got the hang of it once I got into the book. I loved that there was plenty of close calls and mishaps and it was hard to know who to trust when it came to this book. Then there was the whole stress of it all put on Marena trying to save Coulters life by finding the antidot but she was a pretty resourceful women who got connections so if anyone was gonna save him it would be her. Overall great book I really enjoyed it.
Six Days to Live is a well written fast paced romantic suspense. Great plot and character dynamics. I recommend this book. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance ebook. This is my unbiased review.
Good second chance story mixed with riveting suspense. The story opens as Colt is on a mission for the security company he works for, looking for information about arms trafficking. When he overhears something about auctioning a biotoxin, the mission quickly changes. Colt is injected with the drug when his team is attacked, leaving him only six days to live. Any hope of living rests in the hands of his ex-fiancée, Marina, if he can get to her in time.
Three years earlier, Colt abruptly ended his engagement with biochemist Marena without explanation, then disappeared from her life, leaving her devastated. Colt is the last person she expects or wants to find on her doorstep. He doesn't get a warm reception until he collapses at her feet, burning up with fever. She may still be hurt and angry, but she doesn't want him dead. As soon as she hears the details of the biotoxin, she springs into action to find the antidote to save him.
It won't be easy. Marena has been away from her former job for a long time but still has contacts in the business. Knowing that her formula was redesigned as a weapon gives her further motivation. The tension remains high throughout the book as Marena and Colt scramble to assemble everything they need. At the same time, the toxin continues to work its way through Colt's body, causing debilitating effects. I loved Marena's determination and her refusal to let Colt give up.
Unlike many other suspense stories, we know who is behind the attack on Colt and why. However, trust is in short supply, and there are some interesting twists as the story plays out. They agree on the need to find Colt and retrieve the information he took before the auction takes place. I could feel their frustration as their quarry stayed one step ahead.
I was on the edge of my seat as zero hour drew closer. Marena gets some unexpected help, enabling her to make faster progress on the antidote. Colt's condition worsens rapidly, leading her to take extreme measures. As readers, we can see the bad guys closing in, and the tension ramps up quickly. The final confrontation was intense, with surprising revelations and rapidly changing players. The resolution was a nail-biter, and I loved how it went down.
I enjoyed the rekindling of the relationship between Marena and Colt. Neither of them had stopped loving the other, but Marena was wary of trusting Colt with her heart again. Colt knows he made a mistake leaving her and is determined to mend their relationship. He finally confesses why he broke their engagement, and while I understood his reasons, his execution was faulty. He would have done much better talking to her about it first. The crisis brings them closer, though they do nothing about it until after everything is done. Even then, Colt holds back, determined to earn her trust first. Fortunately, he gets a kick in the pants that moves him along. Marena has also been holding back and gets a push from an unexpected source. I loved the ending. Colt was adorably flustered but managed to say what he needed to say. I loved Marena's response.
There are some interesting family dynamics in this book that play essential roles. Love, loss, and stubbornness create situations that have long-term consequences. I liked how the crisis brought people together and forced reevaluations of old arguments. Colt's parents and grandfather had a lot to overcome, but their love for Colt brought them together in the end. Marena's father's protectiveness was understandable if a little over-the-top, but even he could change. I liked Marina's brother, Lucas, and hope there will be a book for him - something about a woman named Alexa...
My only quibble with the book is that thirty-three years old is unrealistically young for a retired full colonel. It typically takes 21 to 23 years of service to reach the rank of Colonel. Colt would have most likely been a major at that age. Most military retirements only happen after you've put in twenty years of service (medical retirements not included).
This is a Second Chance Romantic Suspense. This book did not pull me into this book right away, but once I was pulled into the storyline I did not want to put it down. I really loved the characters in this book, and I loved getting to know them. There was a ton of action and suspense throughout this book, and the romance was a slow burn. I loved seeing the romance come to life between the two main characters again, and I loved learning about their past. I really enjoyed reading this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Harlequin Romantic Suspense) or author (Lisa Dodson) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
This is the 2nd time that I have had to pleasure of reading a book by Lisa Dodson and I must that I enjoyed reading “Six Days To Live”. This is an entertaining read that is fast paced, quick read that is action packed, drama filled, definitely a page turner, great characters, romantic suspenseful mystery, enemies and the plot is awesome. This is a second chance at romance for Colt who is working under cover and Marena who is a biochemist. Colt was Marena fiancé and one day he broken her heart all off their engagement and walking away from her. Now Colt is in for a fight of his life when he and team of commandos are in a raid and just as they are getting away, he is injected with a biotoxin, and he will die within 6 days without an antidote. As he makes his way back to Marena to help him his days are running out. Marena is returning from her job when she arrives, she finds Colt. She is not too happy to see Colt. He informs her of what happen to him the two must let go of the pass and work together to get an antidote to rid his body of the toxic injection that is working its way thru his system.
With all that is happening will Marena be able to come up with an antidote in time to safe Colt, will Colt let Marena know the reason he walked away and called off their engagement, will Marena be able to forgive Colt, will the two get pass their hurt and find their way back to each and have an HEA?
I received an ARC via NetGalley and Harlequin – Romance (U.S. And Canada) and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
The plot is not original, but a good execution can make for a great book. This isn't a great book. The baddies and the reason they are the baddies is known almost from the beginning. One major point of contention I have is the hero being a US Army Colonel, Retired, at 33 years old. Really, really young for that, IMHO. The H/h just don't click and the only "mystery" is why they split three years ago. As second chance romance goes, this one is a dud. For an author with multiply books to her credit, I expected much better. The plot isn't original, and neither is the execution. The whole thing was rather tedious, it very much felt like a Harlequin crank it out story.
At 35 Coulter McKendrick, US Army Colonel, Retired, is on a mission with his private security company when he is injected with a deadly biotoxin. Colt was targeted but he has no idea why, but he has six days to live and many regrets to rectify. One of those regrets is how he treated Dr. Marena Dash when he broke her heart three years ago. She is also possibly the only person who can keep him alive.
My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
This book had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. When Coulter McKendrick is on a mission to uncover some arms dealers he is shot with a dart containing a neurotoxin that will kill him in 6 days. There is no antidote. But Coulter knows someone who might be able to create one. Dr Marena Dash was once his fiancee but she was also a researcheif r whose serum to aid quick recovery in soldiers has been reworked into a dangerous toxin that is now planned to be raffled off to the highest bidder.
Even though their engagement ended badly when Coulter broke it off, Marena can't turn her back on him. As each day goes by his symptoms get worse. Will she be able to create an antidote in time? While all this is happening they are being chased down by the bad people who had the poison created in the first place.
As each day passed the reader is on the edge of your seat hoping that Marena can solve the problem before Coulter's last day. The countdown is on and it's a life and death struggle to see she can solve the problem and save his life.
Who can resist a story about a poisoned man with only six days to find an antidote? That was a sure-fire hook for me. The author is someone I had never read, but she delivered a good book. Thank you to the author for creating a plot that showed imagination!
The pacing and plot was developed to keep the action moving, and the H and h had solid chemistry. I think if I had any advice at all, it would be to work on some of the dialogue; sometimes it crept from the “showing me” into “telling me.” For instance, at the end, she writes something like “she said seductively.” Instead of telling me it was seductive, show me it was seductive. That is my ONLY advice, and that means the book is a good one and gets a four star recommendation!
A great romantic suspense. This story had great characters, an interesting plot, and long over due second chances. Overall this was a great, quick read. I wish the middle had a little more action (either romance or fighting - seemed to drag at times). But the beginning captivated me and kept me reading and I loved the ending.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The action in this story was well written and I was able to visualize all of the scenes. Fast paced danger plagues these characters while love also makes the waters murky. Protection. Honor. Duty. A vow has been made and must be abided by. This was JAG tv show times ten and I enjoyed the military setting.
This is a 'new to me author. I am glad for the opportunity to read this advanced copy provided by Net Galley and Harlequin.
From page one I was turning the pages.
The story begins in a dramatic situation that turns into a life and death situation for the main character Coulter/Colt.
Adding Romance to the Suspense it's his ex that he has to go to for a chance at saving his life.
I was really enjoying the pages but for some reason when Marena's brother, her father and Colt's mom and grandfather are woven into the story I just felt Joy.
I enjoyed all the characters.
I enjoyed the plot.
And the Happy ending.
I will certainly be following author of Lisa Dod.
My review will appear on Net Galley, Good Reads and Amazon.
I received a complimentary copy.
Six Days to Live is a second chance romantic suspense novel by Lisa Dodson.
Marena Dash doesn’t know why Coulter McKendrick broke off their engagement, but he’s back, needing her help, and she knows she’ll have trouble resisting him. Can they overcome their issues this time around?
Six Days to Live was just okay for me. I liked the main characters, but it took me a bit longer to get into the story. The plot and subplots are good, but the story drags somewhat in the beginning and again at the end. Overall, I give it 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers of romantic suspense.
My thanks to HARLEQUIN - Romance (U.S. & Canada), Harlequin Romantic Suspense, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
