Fun, quick read with a grumpy retired SEAL and a single mom with teenage sons. Lots of drama and romance throughout the book as Beth and Connor find that they would like more than a quick fling.
Add in some teenage angst and an ex in prison and you have lots of drama!
While I enjoyed the story, I wish it wasn't over so quickly and maybe have an epilogue on how they are doing down the road.
Part of the Morgan Ranch series another great story in this series, I now own the series. Beth Baker and her tenant retired Navy SEAL Conner O’Neil and his pet half-wolf, Loki's story. Told by a dual POV format. These two get closer as she nurses him back to health. I enjoyed reading their story.
This novella is Beth Baker's story from The Rancher Meets His Match #4 Millers of Morgan Valley series. She was the physical therapist for Juan Garcia. Juan's off on vacation and she's watching over the ranch for him. He has cabins on the ranch and one of them houses Conner O'Neil a former SEAL friend of Jay Williams. He needs a quiet, remote place to spend the summer. He's grumpy, stubborn, has PTSD and has a pet half wolf he picked up in Alaska. She discovers Connor hasn't picked up his supplies so she brings them to the ranch for him. She's surprised by Conner's wolf on her doorstep. She knows something's wrong if he's there. When she gets to his remote cabin and discovers Conner is burning up with fever, she nurses him back to health. He ends up helping her with her son who takes off to visit his Dad in prison.

Beth Baker and Conner O'Neil both struggle with life. Whether looking to live quietly or with family, trauma is real. Beth is a single mother. Her own trials with raising boys have shown her that the male ego is more fragile than their outer body suggests. But dealing with Conner's stubbornness and grouchy behaviour takes levels of patience even she is hard-pressed with dealing. Can trust be formed when both have such serious issues? Can a family be found when the past doesn't want to let go?
Connor is a surly, standoffish former SEAL living at the ranch where Beth works as a caretaker. When he misses a supply pickup and his pet comes looking for help, she kindly comes to his aid. He's not particularly grateful, at first, but finds himself...not averse to her company and care. But, as always, people and life are complicated.
This is a very quick read, and, as such, the plot moves rapidly and we don't get to know the characters too well. I was surprised that the intimacy was mostly fade-to-black, but fans of ranching and blended families and survivors will find a short, good-hearted story here.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I had previously read this story when the anthology Lone Wolf was released. I loved it then and I had to re-read it (as Ms. Pearce is a favorite author of mine!) Dang I just get lost in her stories especially the Morgantown ones!
This is told from a dual POV format. That really helps me to identify with both of the characters. It helps for a more enjoyable story.
While this story takes place over a couple of days, from the story it is revealed that the characters have seen each other around so it really isn't the case of insta-love. But when the two become more involved with each other as Connor is injured and Beth comes to his aid. The two become much closer.
If you have a spare hour, I would definitely recommend you spend it reading this! It makes for a great bookcation.
Beth Baker wears several hat, juggling duties as mother, physical therapist and part time ranch employee. Conner O’Neil former Navy SEAL is reticent and somewhat reclusive as he deals with his personal issues including PTSD. When he sustains a serious injury, Beth tends to his wound. Soon the emotional barriers fall, each providing support, as attraction builds between the two. It was a relatively quick read, that I enjoyed. I would have liked it to be longer to build more depth.
I read this story originally in the Lone Wolf anthology - but was happy to read it again! This story takes place in Kate Pearce's western town filled with the Miller and Morgan families. Beth is a resident in the town - her brother Ted had a short story of his own recently. Beth is a single mom to two young adult men - and still struggling with rebuilding her life after the terrible abuse from the boys father. Conner is a retired Navy Seal who is also still struggling with PTSD and finding his feet after the military. I loved them together and had been hoping to find out more about Beth. I loved that Kate Pearce didn't give Beth and Conner and immediate HEA in the short story (even though you can see them getting there). It was more of a happy-for-now ending, but I was totally on board with that!
Overall - fans of Kate Pearce and this town can't go wrong with this one!
I received this as an ARC via NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.
I’ve loved this author’s Morgan Ranch series and this short read added a little extra to our reading pleasure. Beth doesn’t have time for a relationship between working and raising her two sons. When she learns from Maureen at Maureen’s General Store that the loner renting a cabin on the Garcia Ranch hasn’t been in to pick up his supplies, she knows she has to check on him. Conner likes to stay to himself and comes across as gruff and standoffish. He may think he doesn’t need any help, but his wolf mix dog, Loki, knows best. Beth finds him feverish and in pain. She takes it upon herself to help. Grab your copy and see what happens when these two loners end up spending time together, at the cabin and on an unforeseen road trip.
I received an advance reader copy of this book from NetGalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.
The Wolf on Her Doorstep by Kate Pearce is part of the Morgan Ranch Series. This is the story of Beth Baker and Conner O’Neil. Conner is stay in Morgan Valley at the Garcia cabins. Connor ends up getting hurt and needing someone to care for him. Beth is that person when she goes to check on the Garcia cabins and finds his dog upset. This starts their story. Enjoyed and hope to read more from this author.
This novella is part of a series. It has already been published in an anthology but does well as a standalone novella.
Conner is suffering physically and emotionally but won’t reach out for help. Beth is struggling with issues including past domestic abuse but she’s not so ready to get help from Conner either. When she goes to drop off the grocery order that he hasn’t picked up she finds the injured Conner. Suddenly they are all mixed up together as they deal with issues- Beth’s son’s, and Conner and Beth’s as well. Will Beth and Conner be able to accept help and more from one another?
These were real, genuine characters. There is a background of PTSD and domestic violence but only in the shady past. It doesn’t bring the story down for the reader. Instead there is real progress.
The pace is pretty quick but that is a novella for you. It also doesn’t take away from the story. There are a few steamy parts thrown in for your reading pleasure! However I might prefer to purchase Lone Wolf, the anthology where this first appears.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is a quick read that still manages
to grab my attention.
The plot and characters is quite believable.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
A quick read. I really liked how this involved some older characters. Beth has 2 teenage sons and Conner is an ex-soldier. I liked how all these characters were integral to the story. Beth and Conner’s relationship was a little too quick for my liking but since this is a nouvella, it makes sense. There is mild steamy foreplay that basically continues behind a closed door. While I would have liked a longer and more developed story, I liked this author’s style of writing so will look for more stories by her. This is the first book by this author for me.
The Wolf on her Doorstep by Kate Pearce is a modern day romance. It takes place up in the high Sierra Mountains in Morgan Valley. This book is not a full length novel and as such reads quickly.
Connor O’Neil is renting a cabin on Morgan Ranch. He is an ex seal, and is rather curt and short with everyone. However, he has not picked up his groceries for two weeks and is not answering either his cell or radio phone. Beth Baker works a variety of jobs. One of them is helping take care of the cabins on Morgan Ranch. When she finds out that Connor has not picked up his groceries, she takes them and agrees to bring them out to him. What she first finds is that his dog is at Morgan Ranch on the doorstep. So she collects him as well and drives out to the cabin. Connor is hurt and ill. He discovers that resistance is futile and ends up with her patching him up and bringing him to the doctors, but she runs into her own dilemma and Connor jumps in to help her.
The story is short and focuses on Connor and Beth building a relationship in a short amount of time. Both characters are wounded in their own way and struggle with trust. This is a nice fun read with mature characters. The Wolf on her Doorstep by Kate Pearce is a good read.
This originally appeared in an anthology and is now being redistributed.
I think this worked great as a short story/novella.
The plot kept my interest, the characters were well developed and the writing was solid.
Would definitely recommend.
Beth is a single mom raising two boys. One hers Mikey and one by her ex husband who is in prison for killing Wes mother, the one she adopted. She cleans a ranch and is a physical therapist.
Conner is former SEAL and now stays in a cabin on the ranch Beth works at. Beth goes to check on Conner and he is running a high fever from the injury to his leg. He is grouchy but Beth gets to him. When her son goes to the prison to see his dad, Conner goes with her to find him. Between letting her two boys fend for themselves and the attraction between Conner and Beth, she has a lot on her shoulders.
Good, short story. I thought it was a paranormal book because of the title. A little disappointed but read it anyway.
* Voluntarily read and reviewed this for NetGalley*
Nice novella. I realized as I was reading it that it was familiar. It was part of an anthology. Enjoyed rereading it. Not a fan of any intimate details, but there wasn't much of that. Teenage boys can be a challenge, as was well evidenced. Also bring much love to your life. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley.
A great addition to the Morgan Ranch/Millers of Morgan Valley world.
I read this book when it was first released in the Lone Wolf anthology back in April 2021. I’ve read all of the books in the Morgan Ranch/Millers of Morgan Valley series and I’ve enjoyed all of them very much. The Wolf on Her Doorstep is a short-ish novella and a very quick read so there’s not a lot of time for character development or romance.
Conner is retired military who survived a oil refinery blowing up. I was actually kind of pleased that this story didn’t dwell too much on Conner’s issues as a veteran as this was a change from the usual retired military trope. Beth and her young adult sons are survivors of domestic abuse. She has a few different jobs, one of which is looking after the cabin where Conner is spending the summer.
For such a short book, Kate Pearce really packs a lot into the story. Beth and Conner have a one-night encounter when she visits his cabin and finds him with a fever and an infected leg. After those things are taken care of, they share a night of uncomplicated sex. Later Conner helps Beth when one of her sons goes to visit his father in prison.
Things happen very quickly in this story, which is necessary due to its short length, but I love to read these because they can act as a palate cleanser in between reading much longer books.
A review copy was provided by the publisher via NetGalley but this did not influence my opinion or rating of the book.
I didn’t realize this was a Novella. It was a great story, but I found it to be lacking. I was expecting more. It has all the things for a great read: great characters, interesting back stories (which could have been more detailed), some conflict and happily ever after. Unfortunately, the story felt rushed. I wanted more about Beth and Connor’s pasts, Beth’s ex and his mother.
Thank you NetGalley, Kensington/Zebra Books and Kate Pearce for the ARC of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Beth Baker is keeping an eye on Garcia ranch cabins in Morgan Valley whilst the family are away. She senses her grumpy summer tenant must be in trouble when his pet wolf Loki shows up at her door, demanding she follow. Conner O’Neil, solitary and stubborn, doesn’t want Beth’s help.
Another resident of Morgantown finds love.
I loved that Connor & Beth were mature, Beth is raising two young adult boys & Connor a retired SEAL, this was a very well written novella, which I wanted to be longer & see how things panned out. A delightful read which I read in a sitting, both Connor & Beth had issues to deal with but their attraction sizzled & they found that they were willing to give things a chance
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
