The Surrogate's Gift by L.G. Davis delivers a pulse-pounding thriller that had me flying through the pages. You will want to clear your schedule so you can devour this one in a single go.
Grace has decided that she will bestow the ultimate gift upon Marcia and Travis Thorpe, a couple desperate to have a child of their own, by becoming their surrogate. It seems such a selfless act, and for much of the narrative we are left in the dark as to Grace's motivation in making the offer, for which she wants no compensation. Told from a shifting timeline of past and present, the author teases what brought Grace to this point in her life, and I will say no more, but trust me when I say that this one is well worth an investment of your time.
This is a compulsively readable and twisty thriller that I heartily recommend. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
Wow, I was not expecting that at all! This book was incredibly thrilling, very creepy and so well written.
In my opinion, if I saw this book on a shelf in a store I would pick it up immediately, it's very much my style, and if you're a fan of thrillers and plot twists, you'll want to pick this up too.
We meet a young woman named Grace who chooses to be a surrogate for a rich and well known family, where she then moves in with them and helps them prepare for the baby. During this, secrets are kept and characters become very shady which makes Grace start to doubt all of it. I really like reading through graces perspective, it was a very personal experience with the whole surrogacy. I think considering the history of the main character, I was definitely surprised throughout with how she dealt with everything, she's a very strong individual. The epilogue was both a sweet ending and a really annoying cliffhanger at the same time, but I will 100% pick up the sequel.
This book had me hooked from the start, it is a fast paced easy read. I feel it brought awareness to issues surrounding miscarriage, however, I can’t speak on the accuracy of the representation. I found the story to be a little unrealistic and questionable in some places but that’s to be expected in most thrillers. Overall, a captivating read and I didn’t see the plot twists coming.
5 stars! This book had me guessing until the very end and I could not put this book down until I read the last page. There are flashbacks throughout the story (be sure to look at dates at beginning of the chapter). I love a good plot twist and this book had plenty! A great psychological thriller!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and L G Davis for letting me read “The Perfect Parents” in exchange for an honest review.

This book was previously published as “The Surrogate's Gift”.
“I gave them my baby… but can I trust them? “
Meet Grace, gift sent from the heavens above to Marcia Travis Thorpe. Grace, a divine name, means amongst others charm, goodness, and generosity. Well we can tick the box for generosity. Grace apparently blames herself for something, so the goodness is in question here, but for what? What makes a person give up her baby for nothing in return? The Thorpes appear to be one of these famous, perfect couples, unfortunately unable to conceive on their own. That’s why Grace contacted them. The pregnancy succeeds and she is moving in with them. That’s basically where the trouble starts.
In the very beginning I felt super confused by the book. Can Grace really be that selfless? What on earth happened to her that she would give her baby up for? There are good people in the world, but this, I found very hard to believe. It felt so dubious to me. Also there was this sadness in the book that I did not expect. It radiates a deep sadness.
The book is written in first persons POV, which I usually love, but I find it very hard to relate to Grace. To anyone really. The only sensible person in the book was the friend, Sydney. The book switches between present and past. The story progresses very slowly. Too slow for my taste.
Random thoughts:
- [ ] A) you don’t want to know the gender of the baby but b) you paint the exterior of your house pink? 😳 wtf!?
- [ ] I was expecting a thriller. But the whole book felt sad, so sad. It got better towards the middle. But way too slow paced. T
- [ ] I got my murder mystery in the end, but it did not sit right for me.
- [ ] Grace is a martyr. I understand she was stuck between a rock and a hard place, but still. This is all way too extreme. We are talking about such extreme guilt here, which is unrealistic in my eyes. I just can not relate, sorry.
- [ ] Chad, really, what a douche!
So I am on the fence. The beginning dragged me down, totally. It did not live up to my expectations, but maybe I had the wrong expectations? The book was not bad per se. I just did not like any of the characters here. So I guess I go with 3 ⭐️, average rating.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. Another great read by an amazing author.
This book centers sound Grace and her need to make up for the losses that she feels like she caused in her life. When she changes her mind about becoming a surrogate for her twin sister, Rachel and everything goes wrong, she wants to make amends with herself and her loss and become a surrogate for someone else
I wasn't really surprised by the twists but they were still good. Once again, the author left a twist in the last line of the book!
This is the second book I’ve read by L.G. Davis this week and I wish I had more! This book was amazing. The twists and turns kept coming and the suspense had me on the edge of my seat from the first page until the very end. I loved this book and read it in one sitting. Adding L.G. Davis to my list of best domestic thriller authors! 5 stars!
I liked it. The Perfect Parents/The Surrogate’s Gift was a quick, page turner, single day read. There were enough twists to keep me guessing until the end. This is an ideal beach read!
I am anxious to check out other books by L. G. Davis.
Thank You to Bookouture, NetGalley and L. G. Davis for the opportunity to enjoy this ARC and escape to Wellice with Grace.
3.5/5 rounded up to 4
This was a fast paced and easy read, but it wasn’t my favourite book of this genre!
The parents just didn’t live up to my expectations! They just weren’t bad enough for my liking! That being sai;d, I enjoyed it and did find it difficult to put down!
I think in this case it is a bit “it’s not you it’s me……” I like my characters a little more on the deplorable side! But that is just my preference. A solid 4 stars!!
This is a first by this author for me and I really enjoyed it. Plenty of twists to keep me reading with big helpings of intrigue and even murder. Although I didnt find the characters very likeable it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. It was quite a sad story but I will definitely look to read more by this author.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. Grace wants to make amends for past decisions that resulted in bad consequences. While I think it's ridiculous someone would expect her to carry their baby and then blame them when someone dies, the story was good. There was good suspense, good twists, etc. I enjoyed this book much better than previous ones by this author. Good thriller.
Giving away my child is the hardest decision I have ever had to make. But when I move into the Thorpes’ stunning home so they can support me through the pregnancy, it seems like they are everything I could have hoped for. They cook me delicious, healthy meals and make sure I’m getting the best medical care. They never question my background, or why I am giving them my child.
But before long, I begin to wonder if something is very wrong with the Thorpes. I try to ignore how Travis lets his hand linger on mine for a little too long, and how Marcia comes to check on me during the night. I tell myself that when they control and monitor my movements, it’s just because they care.
Keeping my baby safe and making sure they are going to the perfect family means everything to me. But when a threatening note turns up outside my door and I begin to unravel the Thorpes’ secrets, I realise I may not make it out of here alive.
Wow I couldn’t put it down read in one sitting really enjoyed this book and totally recommend
Thank You NetGalley and Bookouture
I just reviewed Perfect Parents by L. G. Davis. #PerfectParents #NetGalley
Oh my goodness what a brilliant read this is, just couldn't put it down, sad in parts but just so well written I loved every page from the beginning until the end, twists and turns throughout, well described characters whom I felt I knew them and then bang a great conclusion.
I didn't think this author could write another fantastic book one since reading Liar, Liar but she definitely can, certainly a new author for me to follow, everything about this book is great and 5+ stars from me.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC which I have no hesitation in recommending.
This is a story that reads like real life…this is a sad story…the characters are not likable…too many secrets…to much selfishness…this book was sent to me by Netgalley for review…the story is confusing, at times…what will happen next and why? Questions the reader keeps asking…what more can go wrong? The author is talented, but the story needs to have less confusion…
Another one I could not put down and devoured in one sitting. I absolutely recommend this book. Be ready for an afternoon or evening of completely neglecting any chores as this one will have you hooked within the first chapter. I live for books that leave me speechless and this book did just that. I actually feel quite sorry for the next book that I read because there is no way it be able to compete with this!
My heart bleeds each and every time when I read stories about people being desperate for a child. Either they cannot conceive and they have to deal with the disappointment each month or something goes wrong during the pregnancy and they have to work their way through one more loss.
Some people give up completely. Others seek help.
Marcia has almost given up hope when she realises angels do exist and one of them is called Grace. They are both determined. Marcia wants to become a mother, Grace wants to give a couple the ultimate gift. Marcie is looking for a selfless person, Grace is looking for the perfect parents. It seems like they have both found what they are looking for.
End of story, right? They all live happily ever after, right? Well, no.
This is already heavy stuff, but you ain’t see nothing yet. Find out some heart breaking backstories.
I wonder whether you will follow in my steps: never suspecting the baddie, being suspicious of the innocent. In my opinion, when an author can achieve this, they have written a wonderful book.
The prologue is a grabbed-me-by-the-throat one. It’s a chapter that is meant to suck you into the story and I will tell you, it worked like a Dyson on me. 😊
I can tell you this: life gave Grace a whole lot of lemons. Will she be able to make lemonade out of them?
I loved this story. There was not a lot that could drag me away from it, but we all have to eat sometimes, don’t we? 😉 5 stars.
Thank you
Great book! I really enjoyed reading this one! This book had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, and a few crazy twists! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my kindle! I highly recommend reading this book! It was such a good read! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
"The Surrogate's Gift" is a book about a woman who is trying to heal herself and do a good deed for a couple whom she thinks is perfect and happily married. Until she finds out the truth...but could it be too late? I can safely say I could not put this book down! I read it in the space of 1 night and 1 day as I just had to know what happened next every time I'd put it down. It's suspenseful, captivating, a true page turner and the ending had me weeping silent tears.
