The Language of the Wind starts off a little slow, there is a lot of world and character knowledge building at the beginning that was slightly hard to get through. However, the story really picks up speed about 25% in with unraveling just what is going on in the MC's world. Little hints are dropped here and there that only finally unfold at the end. The romance is slow to build but does pay off in the first book. I found it very sweet and I really like that we got to experience the tension.

This book feels almost dual POV without splitting between each character per chapter. Which made me really enjoy the bond that Juno and her Demon have. Overall, just a great story and I am glad that I got a chance to read it!

Thank you for providing me with an eArc of this!
I have so many mixed feelings about this book. I started this book and well, it started off really really slowly, I almost DNF’d but I pushed through and I’m very happy I did. It took about 100 pages for me to get hooked, but after getting to the ending I see now how crucial the information was in those first 100 pages, the plot was built amazingly well for the ending. The little Easter eggs scattered around that just made the ending reveal twist after twist. I absolutely loved that I could not guess what was going to happen next and I loved how the last 300 pages of this book were just full, full of the adventure of Wendark and Juno. I am completely and utterly in love with the queer characters in this book, because of the subtlety and the way they are all accepted. I especially loved how one of our two main characters was non binary, it just made me fall in love with Wendark even more. Wendark was such a beautiful deeply written character and the character growth was stunning. I loved Juno for watching her change and grow throughout the novel. The theme of family and love in this book were amazing, there was so much to love. I loved seeing Wendark’s relationship with Sunbraid and Niannde and I loved how their backstories added to the plotline. The whole plot of this book is just so heavily thought out and the end of it is executed amazingly. I’m definitely recommending this to magic lovers and to anyone who loves a good book about witches because the vibes of this book are immaculately witchy!

"A dark fairytale rich with romance and a diverse cast that dives into the meaning of identity, and the relationship between a body and a soul, THE LANGUAGE OF THE WIND is the first installment of the BROKEN CHIMERA duology."

OMG! My 14-year-old gothic horror-fantasy loving self would have been obsessed with this book. I loved the way the story developed, the character's plot and intrigue keeping me hooked on every word. The relationship between Juno and the demon was so well developed, adding so much more to the wonderful story.

LOVE LOVE LOVED IT.

4.9/5 stars

Thank you NetGalley for proving me with an arc

This was such an intriguing read! I loved the more gothic vibe to it all and just that sense of a darker read without being to overwhelming in that style of genre. It was interesting having the opposite attract kind of relationship between the Witch and the Demon that just somehow seemed to work. The magic of this world was amazing and I had trouble putting the down to return to normal life. Would be such a perfect halloween season read.

The Language of the Winds is unlike anything I've ever read. The whole idea of witches and demons bonding like that is so unique. I loved the characters, especially Wendark, with their sassy attitude. The whole book repeatedly talks about balance and the importance of maintaining it, and I was able to truly see that in motion with Juno and Wendark's relationship. The story flowed really well.
However, it was confusing, because throughout the book the author changes tenses constantly. It sometimes even happens during the same sentence.
Overall, I loved this book, and I can't wait for book two!

Originally didn’t give feedback because I DNF, but it’s hurting my feedback ratio, so I’m going to say that the world was interesting, but I was very confused while reading. I also never give a star rating for my DNFs but this makes me.

I ended up checking this book out from the library as I forgot to download on here before it was archived, but I'm so glad I did! It was actually pretty interesting to read. It wasn't my favorite fantasy in the world, but I'm definitely interested in reading its sequel. It's dark and the witchy vibes of it were a lot of fun too. It really felt more like horror at some points as well which I enjoyed. The demons in this are also a nice addition to the story. I look forward to reading the sequel!

DNF

I was really excited about this one but it just wasn't a book for me. I definitely found the writing to drag on a bit and as a result, struggled to stay invested in the story.

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to the publisher for approving this ARC for me!

Sadly, this book was a DNF for me. It's a well-written book with a very interesting plot and characters, but I struggled to read the digital copy because the formatting was quite off. I recognize it's an ARC and the formatting may not be final. This wasn't the right book at the right time for me.

I may purchase this book and revisit it in the future.

This dark fantasy treats readers with a some romance and horror mixed in. With characters that are well written and with that perfect amount of tension that leaves the readers wanting more. The writing itself flows well and is intriguing till the end.

Appreciated the content warning list in the front.

Thank you to NetGalley and M.R. Grand for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and M.R. Grand for the advance copy of this book for a review!
Recommend you check trigger warnings before reading. Could be difficult for some/younger readers.

I loved this book!
It was very dark and witchy.
I felt that the two MC were very believable. Wendark and Juno are like oil and water -- an idealist dreamer and a cynic. I love how their relationship develops throughout the story. The action along the way is well written and engaging.
I would recommend it for adult-leaning readers because of the content. As mentioned above, see TW for more details on what ideas the book contains.

Thanks to Netgalley and publishers for this eARC

The Language of the wind has a dark fantasy, romance, horror element and it rivals Brothers Grimm perfectly.
The writing and world building is created well and all the characters are so fleshed out that they each have something to give in the story.
The main characters were the total opposite of each other but gelled so well and the enemies to lovers arc created the tension and fire between the two characters which made it for a perfect read.
This isn't your typical story about demons and witches and I just loved the mash of them together. The Language of the wind created a great gothic read.

Thankfully, the author had the trigger/content warnings listed out for readers, so there was very little the jumped out that wasn't expected.

Now this one cut to the chase full force in a dark fantasy meets romance meets horror appeal. It wore the right dress to the ball and managed to pair it with the perfect accents that stole the show. I would and have 100% recommended this book and will continue to do so because it was just so good.

The new play on old fantasy themes was nice and I love the whole demons needing host aspect. It gave some slightly less evil "Supernatural"'s leviathan vibes with a mix of witchy agenda on an ever tipping universal scale.

Overall, if you are a fan of the whole Venom and Eddie dialogue, chaos being held at bay purely because the sides keep each other in check, and some mild spice all wrapped up in a horror themed bow -- This book will blow your socks off and tick all your boxes.

Thank you NetGalley for the earc!!

I was SO excited for this book because I kept seeing some people I follow comment about it so I had to read it.

The writing caught me from the beginning, the descriptions, the characters and the plot were so entertaining and interesting that I almost finished this book in one day.

The story it’s not your typical witchy one, because here witches are different from what we’re used to, but this is what makes this books so appealing. Also the demons are interesting, because they don’t care about looks as much as you may think a demon would. They just want a skin that will last, because they’re tired of constantly have to change them.

If you like gothic/dark fantasy, I think you’ll enjoy this book.

Beware of trigger warnings before reading this book too, remember it’s dark fantasy (demons and witches you know), so check the TW before starting this book!

Sadly had to DNF this book. Not because it was bad but because it wasn’t a book for me (not a genre I am really that used to and I forgot about the trigger warnings until I read a bit into the book).

HOWEVER do not let this this discourage you from reading it!! Because although it wasn’t a book for me, it was very well written and kept me on my toes a little bit wondering what was gonna happen next; and I also really liked how different the witches were from your “normal human-looking” witches. I liked the idea of the witches having some “animalistic trait” when it came to their appearance (ex: having wings for ears).

Although I didn’t read past chapter 4 I wanna say to the author to keep up the good work, because even though this book wasn’t really for me it had lots of potential and you’ve written it very well :)

Unique and truly enjoyable. Not for the faint of heart.

Writing, flow, and characters were all very engaging.

The second I started reading this book, I was pulled in. There's so much intrigue the second you start reading, and it keeps you going! (Even to the point where you have to set alarms on work breaks so you aren't late!) Grand knows how to write in a way that will keep you hooked!

First off, this book pulled me in right from the start. The writing is dynamic and descriptive without the feeling of being wordy or flowery. The author’s writing is highly visual and almost melodic, almost as if I was reading a prose poem.

Almost immediately, I was entranced by the world-building. Truly unique–a fantasy experience both gothic and enchanting. Witches with butterfly wings for ears and demons that take body parts of the dead. I devoured every detail. It truly felt like a horrific fairy tale similar to that of the Brothers Grimm.

The story alternates POV between a witch, June, and her newly bonded demon under the premise that June promises the demon a perfect mortal body in exchange for magic. In this brilliant portrayal of foils, June and her demon conspire together to claim what they respectively lack: a soul and a body. Thus, they begin the journey of locating the perfect pieces to form the perfect body.

Another highlight for me was the diversity of the cast. The cast features LGBTQ+ and BIPOC characters all of which are developed and have a sense of depth. The demon, who lacks a complete body, uses they/them pronouns and presents as non-binary even when obtaining body parts from different genders.

The narrative is gruesome and macabre, but deeply fascinating that draws you in with curiosities. The demon and June’s banter is enjoyable and passionate as their contrasting personalities clash. The romance was a slow burn in the best type of way from hate to that slow realization of love and the power that brings.

The pacing felt even throughout. Each action and choice felt significant, although there were occasionally brief skips of time that threw me a bit off. Nonetheless, the narrative was fluid and intentional without feeling too rushed or too slow. The ending was filled with twists and turns and heart-wrenching anxiety and thrill. It was an absolute joy to read this book and I cannot wait for the next one.

This book was really refreshing to read. The world that M.R Grand created is so magical and different than anything ive read before. There were so many descriptors that made it so easy to envision this world.

I like how the 2 main characters are polar opposites but work well together.

I also enjoyed all the queer aspects to the book; I am glad more and more books like this are being released. I never thought I would read a book about a bisexual witch and a non-binary demon, but I am really glad I did! I like how this is normalized in the world of the book and no one is repressed for their feelings of who they love.

I also really enjoyed all the darker elements to the book

Thank you to NetGalley for a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book really interesting from the first chapter. The writing was so beautiful and how the atmosphere was described. Especially with how the demon explained the language of the wind.
It has a Brothers Grimm’s fairytale element to it that gripped my attention. I like the way the author didn’t make how the demons needed a body horrific but beautiful as they search for something that they thought would fit them.
It made me think about how we see things. If we had eyes like that, or a figure like hers/his then we’d be beautiful too.
The characters are amazing and there is diversity/representation in the story. As well the relationship between a soul and it’s body.
