Told from three perspectives, Owner of a Lonely Heart is everything delightful about contemporary fiction. Thoughtful, poignant, funny, and sweet, we encounter three people who's lives intersect in a hospital in Bristol. Gemma, who lost her husband to cancer, now volunteers at the hospital with her therapy dog and is trying to put her life back together. Dan, a man who really isn't into a long-term commitment, is starting to try to improve himself by helping his daughter and her mother beyond simply paying child support. Casey, who is Dan's daughter, who has a tumor and is getting specialized treatment at the hospital. When the three first encounter each other, they all start to learn how to reach out beyond their own loneliness to help each other and along the way, help to heal themselves. Wonderfully moving and charming!
"Owner of a Lonely Heart", by Eva Carter, had such glowing reviews and high ratings that I just had to check it out! Gemma is a young woman who has recently lost her husband. Not only that, but they were in the IVF process and she has to decide what to do. Dan, a charismatic single guy, just found out that he has a 12-year-old daughter who has a brain tumor. One day, their paths cross, and they have to deal with the budding relationships and feelings between them.
I really wanted to like this book like everyone else, but I just couldn't enjoy these characters and I ended up skipping sections of the book. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
The best word to describe this book is heartfelt. Nothing happens as random as evidenced by Gemma and Dan meeting, her new intertwined life with Casey and how such love and hope grows that quickly. If anyone can understand how important it is to truly live, it would be Casey. As she said when ringing the bell, she is unstoppable. I think also one of the underlying messages in this book is recognizing loneliness and that it needs to be overcome. In the Amazing Story of Us, Andrew helps Gemma move on. Dan realizes that putting up a front will lead to not having someone by your side. Angelica realizes that hiding behind fear leads to not living as well. This is a great read and yes, I did shed some tears along the way especially since it is mirred in illness, but that just made the message that much stronger.
I love love loved this book! It kept me genuinely intrigued from start to finish! The middle being unsure how I wanted the ivf to go and who I was rooting for. Highly recommend
