This book hits me hard right now. Little Emma goes to school. Its a sad time for moms, but also exciting. This book touches on everything that comes along with the first day of school!! Highly recommended if you have a little on their way to school this coming August.
A story that proof that you can be yourself, wherever you are. When we first have to go to a new place, sometimes we're scared. You can find help from your furry friends, like Emma. The friend gave her confidence and she can face her first day of school bravely. How about you?
What a sweet, sweet book! I get modern day precious moments illustration vibes from this book and the message is on point. Such a great take away for kiddos big and small.
Emma is a little worried that her first day of school and asked if she can wear her flamingo costume, so she has good strong wings. She gets to school and is feeling a little uneasy, until she meets the other kids who love her costume, and all students want to join in and play. This is typical for the topic. The illustrations are lovely and match the book quite well. This will be read quite heavily while it’s around but it’s not becoming a classic.
I received an arc of this book from NetGalley for an honest review. This is a great book about a little girl who is having her very first day of school and is nervous.
Emma's first day of school was filled with fear, excitement, and a little confusion. To set her mind at ease, she dresses up as a flamingo. It makes the day go by faster and much more exciting.
My advanced reader's copy was a little choppy so I was not able to get into the full depth of the book. However, that being said, books that help children with the first day of school jitters is always a good bet.
A special thank you to Clavis Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
From writer Van Lunter's Furry Friends series comes "Emma's First Day of School." It follows the story of Emma, who's very excited about her first day of school. She got her things ready, but something was missing. Her confidence. To get her fully ready, she put on her awesome costume. Soon, her classmates did the same, and it was a fun first day. They can be astronauts, scientists, doctors, teachers, or pink flamingos. They can be anything they want. The first-day jitter is inevitable. I read this book to students before their first day may help them. It can give them the needed boost to be who they are. I tried reading this book during our very first class story time and the students. The whole class was excited to pretend like they were their favorite animals. The class was growling, howling, slithering, and bursting with laughter.
First days are scary for everyone – whether you’re a kid or an adult. This little book, featuring a little girl who wants to soar and fly with success in school and who unapologetically shows up to school dressed in a suit of feathers, is the perfect inspiration to remember that it is okay to be our unique, beautiful selves, no matter where we are.
The review copy wasn’t formatted well. However, I still enjoyed the reading experience. I loved that the mom encouraged her to be herself. Giving her a costume to go to school. I wish more of this was encouraged.

🦩 🐦 MY REVIEW 🦩 🐦
It is the first day of school for Emma. She is really nervous and scared. She is so scared that she asks her mom if she can wear her flamingo costume to school, her mom says “just this once” and reminds her that even in her flamingo costume she can just be herself. First off I don't know any parent that would let their child do this. And even if they did the teacher would pitch a fit. Parents beware that
after reading this to my daughter who is in kindergarten she pitched a fit to wear a paw patrol costume. I loved the message it sent about always be yourself even if your different. But why would you need to hide behind a costume to do that? I did like the bright colorful illustrations. Most of the time the pictures did not match with the words on the page. Sentences were chopped up and other sentences were put in the middle of them. It took some time to be able to read her the story. I am assuming this is a formatting issue on tablets.I did pull up this book on my husbands kindle which is much bigger than mine and his was the same way. I loved how the author chose to keep the kids active through the story by making one half of the page the classroom and the other half is the kids in the class room who pull out and put on different animal costumes that were in the dress up box. As you turn the pages your child gets to guess what animal they are by the sound they make.

OK, welcome everybody. Today we have not one, not two, but FOUR newcomers to class, all showing how awkward it can be to attend a new school, or indeed school for the first time. Let’s look at each in turn, eh?
First we have EMMA’S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL (9781605377834), which shows a young girl with the bird’s-nest hair she inherited from her mother, having doubts about going to school. She takes the brave decision to reassure herself in her favourite dressing-up costume, which makes her look like a flamingo of all things. But she loves flamingos, and she needs to be herself. It’s a bit odd that nobody else is having their first day of school, and that we see no staff, but the kids there already with full knowledge of where everything is take to the bizarre sight wonderfully; job done. Don’t come here for logicality (and real responses to a flamingo walking into your form room), but this is pretty and the purpose is served.
On Emma’s left is BENNY GOES TO SCHOOL (9781605377803), part of an established series. Sam is told she cannot take her dog Benny to school, but Benny has other ideas. It’s not strictly about a kid with doubts about how much enjoyment, punishment and everything else the teachers will deliver, but it does make the place a welcome-seeming environment – again, through some daft lapses of reality – so it earns a place at this table.
Still going round, we have OLLIE’S BACK-TO-SCHOOL BEAR (9781398500044) – and there have been three of these before, as well. Ollie runs off the night before her first day in class, when she hears an owl calling outside. Indeed all the animals form a train of characters – and they all go to school, and willingly, but for one shy little bear. Ollie helps the bear, the bear helps Ollie, and she’s fine with the idea of the big, bold building when dawn breaks. Subtly coloured, this looks drab perhaps at first glance, but is definitely charming enough when that’s called for.
Finally we welcome YOUR SCHOOL IS THE BEST! (9780735271647), again a sequel, to a book showing how delightful a cockroach thinks a kid’s birthday party is, much to the lad’s upset. Here the whole roach family smuggle themselves into school, and this is more about the comedy of the bugs’ misassumptions about how great it is for us to have them around than it is about schools. A black sheep of our little family, then, but not one to be ignored. And the lesson is clearly that if you don’t have a flamingo costume, perhaps it’s best to not go for a cockroach one instead. But hey, boldness and making sure you feel at home are to be encouraged.
A diverse class, then, which we like – and yet all get the same strong four stars. I’d recommend buying any or all – and quickly, because there’ll be a test on them shortly.
Emma's First Day of School is a great read for any family that has littles going to school. Whether that is kindergarten or 6th grade, everyone gets nervous from time to time. Reading this story reminds you that it's always important to be yourself and to have fun. That is exactly what I used to book for while reading to my little ones.
This book has fun illustrations and great story line. My 4- and 7-year-old truly enjoyed it.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC

It is the first day of school for little Emma. She is excited and nervous. She decides to wear a costume of feathers to school. What follows is a simple tale of how being true to yourself can help others do the same and have fun along the way.
The illustrations are colorful.
This is a review of the ARC of this book.
This sweet story lets kids know they might not be alone in feeling both excited and a bit jittery before the first day of school. When Emma asks if she can wear her flamingo costume to school, her mom says “just this once” and reminds her that even in her flamingo costume she can just be herself.
Emma gets nervous again before she enters the classroom, but reminds herself to just be herself. The other kids initially have a quiet moment when she enters, but they quickly warm up and tell her they love her costume, and want to dress up as well!
A sweet story about doing new things with new people, like starting your first day of school. Great for kids preparing to enter school or a new class setting themselves!
Thanks to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for this eARC.
This was a sweet little story about being yourself and finding your people. This book was a cute one, I liked the story of finding and making friends in new places despite being nervous. The illustrations were cute too. The message I’d be yourself was great.
Emma, an adorable little girl, is jittery because today is her first day of school...ever! Her mother encourages her not to worry and tells her everything will be alright and advises her to just be herself. But does that appease Emma? No, she is still nervous.
She asks if she can wear her favourite flamingo costume because she is sure that will make her feel courageous. Her mother agrees and off they go into a brand new adventure.
Rather than making fun of Emma when they see her in her costume the other kids immediately go to the classroom dress-up box and don fun costumes too. Soon the whole place is filled with fun wild animals having a first-day-at-school celebratio.
The illustrations are amazing and very detailed. The author/illustrator has also added an interactive component into the story. He has embedded a sweet little bird on each page that little ones can seek and find. The life lesson and take-away of the story is to just be yourself. I really like the diversity of the students in the classroom also. This is the perfect book to share before a child starts school. "Emma's First Day of School"was originally published in Dutch and is aimed at 3-5 year olds. I highly recommend it.
Emma wakes up early, excited to go to school on her first day. But soon, she is jittery and unsure about it. Her mother convinces Emma, and the little girl decides she’ll go to school in her flamingo costume.
The story is for little ones in the same age group. The illustrations are vibrant and cheerful. Not just Emma but every kid in the book has cute expressions. The school is diverse too! The classroom looks authentic with little drawings pinned on the walls, banners, toys on the floor, etc. The detailing is really good without being sophisticated.
My friend and fellow reviewer, Rosh, mentioned the contradictory parts, and I see what she means. This book would work even better if it was limited to either theme. There isn’t anything wrong with being a flamingo for a while. ;)
To summarize, Emma's First Day of School is a sweet little book with lovely illustrations.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Clavis Publishing and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book was adorable! This is the story of Emma who is going to school for the first time ever. She feels nervous but her mother encourages her to go. She puts on a flamingo costume and prepares herself to go to school. This story was sweet and simple and I really liked it. The illustrations were fantastic and super cute!
Emma is nervous to start school, and decides that dressing as a flamingo will make her brave. I was worried, on her classmate's first reaction, that the book was going to be about being teased (everyone is VERY skeptical), but it turns out that all little kids love playing dress-up. and soon the classroom is full of wild animals!
Almost every page of this book is done in full-color, edge-to-edge illustration. (The only time a page isn't covered, it's to help Emma stand out, and it works rather well.) There are lots of little details, including my child's favorite element in a picture book: a hidden object to find on each page! In this instance, it's a little bird, or sometimes the whole nest of birds. This is something I love to see, as it adds a bit of interactivity to keep my kid focused on the page and really taking in the images.
I could certainly see this as the start of a new picture book series. It's a simple, relatable story. What child ISN'T nervous starting something new, ESPECIALLY school? And there's a good cast of classroom characters to bring back for the next round.

Thank you Netgalley and Calvis Publishing for sending me the E-arc of Emma’s First Day of School by Federico Van Lunter in exchange for an honest review.
I love how from the very beginning the mom let Emma wear her flamingo costume to her first day of school. Wearing something that you’re comfortable in is huge not only for adults but for children as well. This one small thing brought Emma some courage to brave her first day of school.
I love the theme of this book and think its so important for us to teach kids at a young age. Just to be yourself. You don’t have to try to be like anyone else because you are enough.
I will defiantly be buying the physical copy of this book for the little girl I nanny.
