My Book of Monsters written by One de Volder and illustrated by Maarten Arys was a visual and imaginative delight.
This is a story of a young boy wizard who uses a paintbrush as a wand, calling his imaginative drawings to life. Monsters come alive from his drawings in many different varieties, from creatures large enough to be mountains to tea drinking frilly monsters. With a delightful rhyming pattern, this was fun to read. Not to mention it also had just the right amount of amusing ick factor to make my stepson giggle.
Thank you to Netgalley and Clavis Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this title.
I finished reading this to my kid and she immediately asked for a repeat read. Automatic 5 stars!
And I was surprised on this one, because monsters? Surely that would be too much for her. She's only 4 years old! But Maarten Arys has managed to illustrate monsters that are gross without being too scary. Even the spider monster, which I was sure would be a problem after the latest incident at our house (don't leave whistles outside, they are excellent spider homes....), but even that one made her laugh.
The monster cast is pretty large! Arys must have spent quite a long time developing all these creatures. Only a few come from common monster mythology, and quite a lot seem to be original creations. Very impressive.
The text of the book is light and quick. The rhymes aren't too predictable for an adult, and are entertaining to a child. I'm especially fond of the page of the monster wedding, as that got a big laugh from my kid.
The book ends with a little blank canvas for your own child to draw upon. Granted, I got the ebook, so no chance of drawing there, but I think it's a great detail to go along with the art theme. No sense making a book all about creation and then keep a child from joining in!
Advanced copy provided by the publisher.
this was cute. not as cute as some others ive read. the illustrations were so well done and the story was cute.
I read this one with my son and it was a blast! Oliver is obsessed with monsters right now so this was exciting for him. I loved the rhyming throughout the book! The illustrations are really creative and some of the monsters were really scary. There are also some interactive parts where you have to find monsters too. We had fun counting them! At the end of the book, there's a part where you can create your own monster in a picture frame. I think that’s a brilliant idea for a kid's book!
Overall, Ollie and I really enjoyed this one. I wish there was a little more plot to the book but that’s okay. We did have fun and he did want to read it more than once!
This is story of a young boy who likes to draw monsters and the monster comes alive. The monsters mentioned are all cute and adorable. I really liked this book. This book will encourage kids to draw more. The illustrations were really adorable too, the monster were adorable too. Overall, it was a charming book and i think it is a great book for children!
This is my first review of a children’s book. I wanted to try something new. A young boy creates monsters and brings these images to life. A rhyming picture book that shows the reader that with some creative imagination anything is possible. The story is cute and sweet. The illustrations are impressive and colorful. This book, I think will capture the attention of young readers with the colors and it’s about monsters.
Disclaimer: Thank you to NetGalley and Clavis for this ARC, I received a copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
My Book of Monsters is a very humorous children’s book chock full of imaginative and fun monster drawings and a great rhyming scheme story for little ones. The monsters are original and cute without being overly scary so I don’t think there’s any worries about scaring a child. I’d buy this book for a child in my life.
**Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-arc I received in exchange for my honest review**
I appreciate the rhyming style and the illustrations were cute. That being said, it felt kind of bland overall. I don't know that I can pinpoint why. Feels like a filler purchase versus a must-have.
Adorable! The rhyming verse is fantastic, and the illustrations are top notch. The book also cleverly promotes the power of creativity as it nudges its young readers into engaging in drawing/art. This is sure to be an instant hit with kids!
This is an adorable children’s book that allows the reader to become a part of the story by creating their own monsters at the end. I loved the rhyming sentence structure and the illustrations were cute and creative.
***first off, thank you Clavispublishing and NetGalley for providing me a free copy of the book in exchange for honest feedback.***
As an artist myself I love to watch other artists' pieces to get inspiration and feed my visual memory
and I find children's books to be perfect for me, they are whimsical and nostalgic.
the monsters in this book were so colorful, diverse, and imaginative.
I loved page 14 (I honestly didn't notice the hidden monsters until I finished reading the sentences). And in regard to the latter, I loved how rhyming the sentences were, it's my favorite thing when they are included in children's books.
However, I have some pet peeves on children's books in general: most have no real plot or consecutive
actions, merely art pictures with some description, I know most children have a short attention span but
they actually do have, indeed!
my other pet peeve is actually when the book describes some "bad manners" in a neutral or desirable way, like in this book for example: -pardon me- slurping snot. I wouldn't want my younger brother to read this and think that's an okay thing to do because he's read it in an enjoyable book.
All in all, this book was so cute it spoke to the artist child in me, I enjoyed it.
The illustrations in this book were really well done! And I loved that there were interactive and engaging elements like finding the monsters hidden on the pages. This was a really cute book!
I very much enjoyed this book the pictures were beautiful the rhyming was fun also like the fact that at the end of the book there is a place for kids to draw their own monster.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. It's about being creative at it's core. Rhyming text that goes along with detailed illustrations sure to make little ones sit still and listen for a few minutes.
I love how in this story the child sees their monster come to life. I could see it inspiring children to express their creativity. Personally I felt the plot was a little lacking as far as the story went. I would have loved to see more about what the monsters did once they came to life.
My Book of Monsters is a cute little fast paced story for children. The illustrations are nice for helping children deal with their feelings about monsters. Stick them in envelope.
I got my copy in English but can't find a credit for the translator.
The fun is in freeform verse and is a delightful tale of all the "monster" a small one with a paintbrush and palette can create. I loved it as much as the grandkids.
The illustrations by Maarten Arys are simply delightful, colorful, vibrant, and very imaginative.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age and also for ESL readers.
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Clavis Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!

A creative artistic little wizard is a pro with his paintbrush. He uses his wand as his paintbrush and incessantly designs creepy assorted monsters that magically wake up and come alive...
"My drawings start to tremble,
my pictures start to shake.
The creepy monsters come live,
their bodies start to wake."
The monsters wander around. They like to bathe, dive, swim, play and read in pools of slime. Each one is uniquely different and the author asks the reader which one makes you sh-sh-sh-shiver most?
The last interactive page is an invitation ( maybe if you are a wizard too ) to draw some creepy monsters of your own. The only rule and restriction to that request is.... to encase your monsters in an envelope so that they never, ever escape.
What a fun book to read. The illustrations are full of imagination and monster flair! Written in rhyme, this book is sure to be read again and again. I love the whole playful charming vibe and kids will also. I highly recommend "My Book of Monsters!
My Book of Monsters is a really fun story about monsters!! I liked the illustrations of the different type of monsters. this book wasn't scary!
This story is about a boy who has the ability to draw monsters that "come alive". There's no real plot--just a description of the monsters he draws and how they all look different.
I love the detailed drawings of the monsters. Some look like typical monsters that we normally think of; others look more human. This book is very cute and promotes creativity among young kids!
