I’ve been following Sarah’s Scribbles for ages, so I was intrigued by this other creation by the same comic artist.
As expected, this was quite bizarre. The world of Cryptid Club was a look into the adventures of elusive creatures such as Big Foot and Loch Ness Monster (and their puzzlement over human beings).
Did I enjoy it? Yes I did. It wasn’t as amazing as Sarah’s Scribble IMHO, but it was still noteworthy. It showcased Sarah’s jokes really well (my kind of humour!), and I found myself chuckling in some places.
A fantastic, funny little coffee table book for the spooky season. In turns cute, spooky, and hilarious.

This was such a cute and funny book, I really enjoyed reading! I love how the monsters were in this book, the panels were so silly and humourous with many references to pop culture and other things. This is a great read if you're looking for something quick to read and also a light-hearted and a fun pick-me-up!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing the e-arc!
A super cute collection of comics about a super cute bunch o' cryptids! I've followed Sarah Andersen's comics from the time her first comic collection came out, and I've followed her on social media since, so most of these comic panels were not new to me. Even so, I enjoyed rereading the ones I'd read before, and I enjoyed being introduced to the new ones. I hear the physical copy of this book glows in the dark so that's pretty cool, too.
I’ve been a fan of Sarah Anderson for a while now. I also had the opportunity to review fangs.
A unique comic book series called Cryptid Club combines pop culture, dark humor, and mythical legends. The book illustrates scenarios that all introverts would recognize, so while it is a welcome departure from the Sarah's Scribbles series, it is still interesting and relatable.
There were a few of the comics that made me laugh, but there was a few I didn’t get. Even still, it was entertaining to witness long-time subjects of obsession and mysticism (such as the Slender Man, Mothman, aliens, and sirens) portrayed as adorable figures in situations that were distinctly human.
With Cryptid Club, Sarah Anderson creates a stunning perspective allowing us to view the creatures we deem legendary, scary or supernatural, through a new lens.
What if aliens obsessed over the absolute cuteness of cows & maybe abducted one just to keep for themselves? What if a sleep paralysis demon was riddled with anxiety and just wanted to make a friend? What if you were told a complete love story existing within a few comic slides about how one ghostie met their soulmate at the morgue?
In this sweet, humorous, & quirky little book you'll come across some Taylor swift lyrics, aliens dabbing, a chupacabra who idolizes Dracula, and so much more to fall head over heels in love with.
I absolutely adored every bit of Cryptid Club & highly recommend when you are in need of a lighthearted + spoopy good time!
Sarah Andersen brings her signature humor and charm to spooky season. I’ve been a pretty big fan of her other work, and I’m a pretty big fan of crytpids (please check out some of my other questionable reading choices), so this was a slam-dunk for me. It’s silly and adorable!
This collection stars a cryptozoologist’s dream of crypts, from classic ones like Bigfoot and the Chupacabra to newer ones like Sirenhead and Slenderman. For those of us not so up to date, there’s a helpful who’s who section in the back. Unlike the author’s previous collections, all of the comics are in gorgeous full color. The art is whimsical and emotive (which I imagine had to be hard with the characters who don’t have faces!) and fits the subject perfectly.
Despite the fact this collection stars supposedly scary cryptids instead of the usual stand-in for the author, a lot of the themes are the same. There’s social anxiety, like what happens when the crypts try to take a group photo. There’s fashion commentary, like the Fresno Nightcrawlers complimenting the Flatwoods Monster’s dress (“It has pockets!”) or Big Foot and Slenderman commiserating over how hard it is to find clothes that fit. And hey, cryptids have some of the same problems as us, like trying to find a babysitter (the siren has some, uh, out of the box suggestions for the Kraken).
While most of the comics made me smile, there were a few duds and a few that made me laugh out loud. This isn’t the sort of collection that leaves you rolling on the floor laughing, but rather one that makes you smile and awww in adorableness. There’s a couple of running gags (the siren’s many bad dates, Mothman’s obsession with lights, the sweetest friendship between Bigfoot and Nessie) but for the most part they’re unconnected.
Overall, this is a great collection of comics perfectly timed for Halloween season. If you’re a fan of Sarah Andersen’s other work, you won’t be disappointed!
I received an advance review copy of this book from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This was a fun and easy read, filled with the cryptid’s we’ve all grew up hearing about - seeing them as ‘real’ creatures, who hate socialising, who’s dresses have pockets, who can’t take a good photograph no matter how hard they try.
Sarah Andersen never dissapoints! This was a quick read which kept me company on a few train journeys!
Sarah Andersen and I seem to share the same identical sense of humor because there is not a single panel in this book that I did not laugh at and love. This book is full of witty, heartfelt, and fun comics that continue to prove Andersen is the master of using 4 panels to tell an entire story.
Every cryptid one could possibly be looking for is found within the pages of this fun book and they all get their own witty moment to shine and prove that they are as awkward as the rest of us.
I loved this one and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun book to read this spooky season or just to get a year-round dose of delightful cryptids.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the delightfully fun read!
What a fun collection of comics! If you are a fan of cryptids - or even just cute, clever webcomics - this is a fantastic read.
You've likely come across Sarah Andersen's comics online, even if you might not have known at the time - I wouldn't have recognized the artist's name, but I definitely recognized a comic or two once I started reading. This volume collects a number of strips about cryptids and their escapades, including celebrities (gasp!) such as Mothman, Nessie, and extraterrestrials. While not designed as a coffee table book, this is one that will likely grace the coffee table of my own lair once I can get my hands on a physical copy - it's that good.
Thank you to Andrews McMeel and NetGalley for providing a copy for review.
Equal parts cute, cuddly, and... creepy, CRYPTID CLUB dives deeper into the lore of some of the world's most well know things that go bump in the night.
I loved Cryptid Club! This was not much of a surprise though, given how much I love Sarah Andersen’s other works. The artwork is on point and seriously so cute. I am a sucker for supernatural creatures and she is always able to make what should be the creepiest creature, into an adorable cartoon. The jokes are hilarious and often make sense to the specific cryptid. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up if you love delightfully silly comics!
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I have read all the books by Sarah Andersson. This is her latest creation. I liked the comic so much. Typical signature style of the cartoonist and little giggles she creates. Pages turn themselves so fast that book finishes itself. Wonderful skill that she has to look familiar situations in so unfamiliar way. Wonderful. All her books are recommended.
THIS. WAS. SO. CUTE. I loved all different monsters, cryptids, and aliens what were featured in the book. I honestly, could read this over and over I loved it that much. Highly recommend checking this one out!
I am terribly sad that Sarah Andersen decided to make this only a limited series because I absolutely LOVE it. The cryptids are SO cute, the little stories are heartwarming and funny, and I could read them all day.
Glad this collection contains a few comics that were not in the original run also!
Are you shy? Do you hate having your photo taken? Do you live in the woods and creep through the night, or generally feel misunderstood? Then this cute collection of cryptid comics is for you!
Sarah Andersen is a favorite four panel cartoonist, and much like her vampire collection Fangs, Cryptid Club shares the fun and relatable side of creepy creatures. I love her sense of humor and her simple yet highly expressive character designs. And if you're worried that Bigfoot, Nessie, and Mothman hog the spotlight, don't worry, because Andersen also shares the modern woes of lesser-known and more recently imagined cryptid pals.
This was so adorable! I haven’t seen any of Sarah Anderson’s work before but I really like her style and the way she portrayed these creatures as so relatable and human-like was very silly and a lot of fun. If you love spooky season but not the actual scary part, this is the perfect little book to help get in the mood!
Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for gifting me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I read some of this on webtoon and really liked it so I knew what the book would be. This book is short comics about cryptids put together as a collection. There isn’t really any overarching story, or anything deep being told. These are just cute creatures and cute little 2-4 panel stories. It was fun to read and I will definitely read through again.
Cryptid Club is a collection of one-page vignettes of the lives of various cryptids (animals whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated). This is one of the funniest and sweetest graphic novels I have ever read! The illustrations are adorable and the punchlines made me chuckle on every page. I can see myself recommending this in the Bookshop a lot leading up to Christmas!
A short graphic novel read as snippets into the lives of cryptids. This has me laughing from start to finish, it was cute and silly. I suggest going in with some knowledge of cryptids it helps the jokes land, but there is a glossary of the featured cryptids at the end.
I would recommend it to a high schooler who is getting into the paranormal, it's a fun introduction to the topic and if they are nonbelievers then it's a silly comic to enjoy.
