I've loved Sarah Andersen's artwork for a very long time, so I was delighted to be able to read this one straight away.
This series includes humorous sequences with well-known enigmatic characters including Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Slender Man, ghosts, and aliens.
These comic strips were still lovely and funny to me. This would be the ideal gift for someone who enjoys cute things, has a quirky sense of humor, and is interested in cryptozoology and the paranormal.
Following the tales of a group of Cryptids with social anxiety, this sweet graphic novel is sure to be a smash hit with my students and other teenagers alike.
The Cryptid Club by Sarah Anderson is a tight-knit group of cryptid friends with social anxiety, trying to get by in the human world sometimes.
The drawings are very cute and the short four-strip comics are adorable, heartwarming, and thoughtful.
Wondering which club member me and my friends are.
I have historically loved Sarah Andersen's comics since my Tumblr days a decade ago, and Cryptid Club was no different! The comics were fun and it was just a cute (dare I say... Wholesome?) little read about these otherwise frightening creatures. This would make a great coffee table book!
Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my thoughts.
Cryptid Club is us. Us is Cryptid Club? 15 creatures that were created just like us. Some are an introvert, annoying, and full of themselves. A simple yet entertaining material. I haven't read any of Andersen's work but this book is a must-read! Relatable and funny.
Thanks to @netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing an earc. I give 5 ⭐️
I adore all of Sarah Andersen’s books and Cryptid Club is no exception! Vignettes with some of our favorite (real and fictional) cryptids like Slenderman, Fresno Nightcrawlers, Nessie, Mothman, and more will make you smile and laugh. A cute little book, I really enjoyed it!
Miigweetch NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
I am a fan of Sarah Andersen and devoured “Fangs” so I was eager to dive into her latest offering. Her art style is adorable and instantly recognizable. “Cryptid Club” is a cute comic collection about, you guessed it, cryptids. The classic big hitters, such as the Loch Ness Monster and BigFoot, are represented, along with a few others that I preemptively Googled while I read (I didn’t realize there was a handy-dandy GLOSSARY at the end of the book so I needn't have bothered.) Fresno Nightcrawlers and the Flatwoods Monster in particular were new to me, although I found myself immediately vibing with the Flatwoods Monster.
This is a quick, funny read. Each page is presented as a stand-alone comic, although the cryptid characters do interact with each other in various panels. [For this reason I think this would make a great bathroom reader]. I recommend this book to fans of Sarah Andersen (duh!) and others who devour one-shot comic collections, as well as cryptid lovers (or cryptid haters, I truly feel like there is something on offer for everyone here).
Okay, some of these were absolutely hilarious. I also love the idea that all the cryptids are all just hanging out and living their lives.
This book is absolutely adorable! I am a huge fan of anything cryptid relatred, so I immediately requested this book! The art style is super cute, and the book itself is just a funny quick read. Definitely loved the book!
I do love Sarah Andersen’s work, particularly Sarah’s Scribbles, but also the more recent branching out, such as Fangs. This is another direction again, and I first stumbled across strips from the Cryptids on Instagram. Here we have a whole collection of the weird and wonderful!
So what exactly is a cryptid? The dictionary definition is: “an animal whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated, such as the yeti.”. Indeed, the yeti is featured here, along with Mothman, Nessie, generic ghosts and aliens, and other less familiar to me entities such as Slenderman and the Fresno Nightcrawlers (as shown on the cover).
All very much Halloween’y characters, but this is not a creepy book at all! Instead it’s a lovely, gentle humour, with these characters sharing e.g. a fear of cameras, or the loneliness of being an outsider. And then throwing the daftest of situations at them – my favourites probably being the way Mothman gets distracted by shiny lights, or the Nightcrawlers – walking legs, more or less, being just fabulous when discovering high heels :)
4 panel comic from book where the yeti tells a ghost that Mothman only appears before a disaster, before showing a girl about to cut her hair
The single ‘complaint’ (not really) I had about the book reading it is that I could have done with a brief explanation of some of the cryptids – and lo, exactly that is provided at the end! Wonderful :)
There’s no story, it’s not that kind of thing, but the casual grouping of the characters and humorous little vignettes from their existences works perfectly. It’s like sneaking a peek into a group chat for creatures, or random moments that show them to be misunderstood muppets.
Thoroughly recommended, it was a lot of fun in a gentle kind of a way. And a good reminder that we’ve maybe just misunderstood all of these ‘monsters’ all along ;)
I have been following Sarah's cryptid journey on social media since its beginning and love that the comics are now bound together in a book. The comics feature classic and modern cryptids interacting with each other and humans in a sweet and comedic way. My favorites in the book are the aliens abducting cows because Thorp things they're neat and anything with Mothman being a light-addicted menace. The book is easy one that will be fun to go back to over and over again. Other than a few overarching themes regarding some of the specific cryptids, there is not really an overarching plot line so it can be enjoyed in small bursts rather than needing to be read straight through. I absolutely adored this book and can't wait to see what Sarah hyper fixates on next.
I really enjoy the art of Sarah Andersen and her off beat humor. If you don’t know, Cryptid’s are beings that are claimed to exist but are not proven, such as Loch Ness Monster, Aliens, Slender Man etc. I would suggest you start the book with the glossary at the end of the book. There were drawings of creatures I had no idea existed like the Fresno Nightcrawlers, Siren Head and Sleep Paralysis Demon. But the jokes are funny. Who doesn’t love alien teens crashing their spacecraft or aliens obsession with cows. I have seen some of these before probably from my adult daughter sharing them as she follows Andersen’s instagram account. A fun and lighthearted read. Thank you NetGalley, the author and Andrews McMeel Publishing for a temporary ARC in exchange for a review.
A great collection of comics about cryptids by comic artist Sarah Andersen. Lively, funny, and cute! My favorites are the ones with Mothman. A great addition to any teen and adult graphic novel collection.
This book is a collection of short comics about various creatures of folktales, urban myths, and legends including Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, extraterrestrials, and Mothman. They are very cute and humorous, and the illustrations are all done in Sarah Andersen’s trademark style.
A few highlights for me included:
The Flatwoods Monster declaring that her dress has pockets.
Teenage extraterrestrials accidentally crashing their spaceship in Roswell.
Bigfoot desperately trying to be photographed, but the pictures always come out blurry.
Mothman wearing light-up shoes.
Ghosts and aliens keeping track of how many kids dress up like them for Halloween.
The book also includes a glossary at the back naming each cryptid or cryptid type along with its approximate origins and a brief description of characteristics.
Thank you to NetGalley for an early copy of this book.
Sarah Andersen comics are always a delight to read and Cryptid Club one is no exception. This particular collection focuses on cryptids, or mythical creatures. I thought the book was super cute and reminded me of her previous collection Fangs, about a vampire and a werewolf dating. I recommended Fangs around Halloween last year, and I plan to do the same with Cryptid Club this year!
I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for some light reading with a touch of spookiness thrown in.
Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with an Advanced Readers Copy,
I've always been a fan of Sarah, her comics are always popping up on my feeds, and in fact I had already seen several of these comics before. Still I found new scenarios and characters to delight in, and even learned about a few cryptids I had never heard of before, like the Fresno Nightcrawlers, and Siren Head. All her characters have great energy. Nessie's trying not to laugh face, the cow loving aliens, and light obsessed Mothman had me chuckling. Thank you Sarah for continuing to spark joy.
"Cryptid Club" was a very nice little comic filled with different stories and different cryptids! I really enjoyed the comic
The comic is built up on several different comic strips and put together to create a story. Even though the strips didn’t always have anything to do with eachother, it was still a cute and nice read.
The story is fairly short, but definitely enjoyable. I would most likely recommend this to someone who likes to read comics/likes the artists work.
Honestly, the way I adore this.
A quick read, but something that you can get back to at a later date and still get a good chuckle out of. Even the ones I’d already seen across the world wide web still made me smile when seeing them again, and that is, quite frankly, exactly the way it should be.
Also; I live a Mothman-appreciation life and this version of the man, the myth, the legend? My favourite.
Love Cryptid Club, Sarah Andersen has done it again. The lives of these lil guys are so sweet and laugh out loud enjoyable. Fingers crossed that this continues in some form, although I think she's stopped posting them on social media, because I love them all.
Review: 4 stars

I was given an eARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
"Cryptid Club" is a collection of comics about some very famous cryptid creatures, such as Bigfoot, Slenderman, Moth Man, and many more. I had so much fun reading this! It is such a cute, fun, and well illustrated book. The characters are so entertaining and relatable (I didn't see that coming either!), and I actually laughed aloud many times reading this (as opposed to that nose snort one normally does when they say they 'lol'). Sarah Anderson has got to be one of my favourite authors/illustrators around!
