Check out my INTERVIEW</a> with the talented (and soooo nice) Nalini Singh! She even answered a question about ILLIUM AND AODHAN that I think you'll all want to know the answer to.

https://dearauthor.com/features/interviews/interview-nalini-singh-on-archangels-resurrection-her-series-and-her-love-of-books/

And now for my review:

During the war in Archangel's War, Zanaya was bitten by Lijuan and fell, and that’s more or less where this book starts. Alexander watches that moment in disbelief, unable to do more than catch the archangel he thinks of as his Zani and wonder if this is her end. He gives her into the hands of the half-Sleeping, half-awake archangel Cassandra. Though Cassandra is a foreseer, she can’t answer Alexander’s question about whether Zanaya will ever wake again. Alexander is devastated; his relationship with Zanaya was on-again, off-again but he has always counted on her being in the world and he doesn’t know if he can exist in it if she doesn’t.

A short chapter in Cassandra’s viewpoint follows, a murky prophecy where a sickly green infection colors the future and there is only one tiny chance, a diamond strand of small possibility for something better. Cassandra can’t change the future but she has influenced it, and so this is the only timeline in which Elena has survived. Hope remains, but it’s fragile, and the chapter ends with a cryptic prophecy: “Lovers fall and lovers rise. The river stops flowing. This time will be the end.”

We then flash back thousands of years earlier, to Alexander’s birth and childhood. Alexander is a much beloved child with caring parents and an affectionate older brother, Osiris. Unlike his shy parents or his brother who studies the world around him, Alexander is a boisterous, focused and strong for his age. He is enrolled in training and there he befriends Callie, a slightly older girl. She is of course, Caliane, who will grow up to be an archangel.

When his mother is assaulted by a more powerful angel who pursued her against her wishes, Alexander’s choice to seek help from an archangel’s general not only protects the family, it also brings him to the attention the general, Akhia-Solay, who places him under his command and provides him with further training and opportunities.

The incident is a defining one. The lesson Alexander takes from it is that power matters, that it’s worth holding and using to protect others and to fight for what’s right and just. Over the centuries that follow, Alexander rises in power, becoming an admired and handsome general. He takes lovers, but no one means the world to him and he doesn’t anticipate that anyone ever will. This expectation is confounded when he meets a black-skinned, silver-haired young angel named Zanaya.

4.5 stars-ARCHANGEL’S RESURRECTION is the fifteenth instalment in Nalini Singh’s adult GUILD HUNTER paranormal/fantasy romance series focusing on Archangel’s, angels, vampires, shifters and hunters. This is Archangel of Persia Alexander, and Queen of the Nile, Archangel Zanaya’s story line. ARCHANGEL’S RESURRECTION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and history regarding the Cascade.

Told in four parts, overlapping with several previous story line premises, covering thousands of years, using third person perspective ARCHANGEL’S RESURRECTION follows the life, the death and the life again of Archangel of Persia Alexander, and Queen of the Nile, Archangel Zanaya. Alexander and Zanaya have a colorful, riotous, and volatile history, and throughout the eons, separation would always rekindle with a violent clash as Archangel’s were not meant to be together for extended periods of time-too much power, too much ego, too many wars to protect or destroy but the time had come, Zanaya had chosen the ‘Sleep’ of the Archangel’s, leaving an embittered and heartbroken Alexander behind. Thousands of years would once again pass, bringing with it the Cascade (an event that causes massive power fluctuations and other changes among the members of the Cadre) brought about by Archangel Lijuan’s descent into madness. A prophecy of death and destruction, resurrection and renewal, as well as the rise and fall of Archangels would be the Cascade, an imbalance that would see the death and injury of many angels and Archangels including the awakening , the fall, and the rebirth of the woman Alexander loved, Zanaya, destroyed by the madness of Lijuan.

ARCHANGEL’S RESURRECTION looks at Alexander’s brother Osiris’ decline and plummet into madness and fanaticism; Cassandra’s sight revealing pathways that converge and divert; Antonicus, Archangel of the lost city of Elysium, who had dared to cross Lijuan’s black fog, is alive yet not, rising to take over where Lijuan left off.

ARCHANGEL’S RESURRECTION is a slow moving, complex, and detailed story line of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, obsession and madness, love and understanding. The premise is intricate, startling and enchanting; the romance is complicated and resilient; the characters are powerful, charismatic and strong.

I received an advanced reader copy of Archangel’s Resurrection. Review contains my own thoughts and opinions.

Archangel’s Resurrection is book 15 (whoa, amazing!) in author Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series. It is a spectacular tale of love, loss, and war that takes place over many millennia. Alexander and Zanaya are two archangels that love and fight in equal measure over stretches of time. Their relationship is passionate and tumultuous and the reader feels all of the feelings right along with them. Following along with their stories from their youth through ancient status, you learn so much about them and also those that are important to them. It’s a beautifully woven tale!

I recommend this to readers of epic fantasy series that covers many characters, space, and time. I’m excited to read more of Nalini Singh’s work in the future, too.

This is another book in the series where I went in not necessarily uninterested, but certainly not clamoring for this story to be told, and left absolutely loving it. I has similar feelings the first time Nalini Singh moved away from Raphael and Elena and decided to tell Dmitri's story. I think it's that unassuming quality, going in with no expectations and then remembering why Nalini Singh is one of the best at what she does.

Not often can an author take background characters who are very surface level and give them enough depth to carry their own story. Not only carrying their own story, however, but actually opening up the created world even more by giving readers a bigger glimpse of the "then" of angelkind.

Alexander and Zanaya are Ancients. Meaning, they've lived countless lifetimes. I loved that to tell their story, Nalini Singh didn't just pick up from where things kind of left off after the battle with Lijuan, but went back to the beginning. Because really how are you going to properly tell a long-lived being's story, or love story, without seeing where it all started?

I liked getting some more context to events that have only been alluded to within the previous books and with that, I liked learning more about Alexander and Zanaya. I'll admit there were times I wasn't sure how Nalini Singh would get their love to work, or if it even would work. They are both characters who value their independence and will dig their heels in when they feel they're being challenged for their beliefs. This often leads to toxicity within their relationship as well as decades of separation.

I think that both Alexander and Zanaya get caught up in their immortality. While angels can die, it's not an easy occurrence. I feel as though both believe that they have time everlasting. They will always come together and break apart. It's not until mortality confronts them on their own turf in various way that they begin to see what their relationship means. There's no doubt that Alexander and Zanaya constantly fight - with each other and for one another - but it's whether they can get to a place where those differences don't impact their feelings for one another, that's a big draw in the story and I'll admit to going back and forth about how I envisioned their relationship progressing. Nalini Singh is never one to let me down!

All this takes place while the fallout from the war with Lijuan is still being felt throughout the world. Although it comes in waves, there are far-reaching consequences that will be felt for quite a while. I feel like this book more than many others in the series really showcases the depth of time and how certain events have have such long-lasting effects on people and places.

With that said, I think that this book is the closest to being a conclusion to the Cascade storyline. If that is the case, I'm looking forward to seeing where Nalini Singh take the story next!

Archangel's Resurrection is a bit different from the rest of the Guild Hunter's series (Archangel's Sun), so readers should prepare for a book that focuses more on the relationship and less on the world/world building- unusual in this series. But this is the story of Archangels Alexander and Zanaya, whose on-again-off-again relationship has literally spanned eons, so there's a lot to cover and anything else is kind of extraneous. We start at the battle of New York and Zanaya's fall at Lijuan's hands, then go back in time to Alexander's childhood, so readers new to the series will probably be pretty lost and either need to accept that they'll have no idea what is going on for awhile and go with it, or put the book down and start with Book 1 in the series.

This is a story of growth and learning, of two angels who are often too similar for their own good. Both Alexander and Zanaya are strong and proud warriors, determined to be the best possible and hold onto their honor, something we have frequently seen lacking in other angels and it's nice to see others recognize this as well. Unlike many previous characters and their equally strong mates however, Alexander and Zanaya don't seem able to compromise with each other and they clash as fiercely as they love. Interestingly, when Zanaya meets Elena seems to be the first time she realizes that it is possible for two warriors to be equals as well as lovers without clashing apart becoming inevitable. As much as we see Alexander and Zanaya grow into the people they will become across the millennia, it seems that they still have things they can learn from even the youngest of humans or angel kind. This is one of the first books where we get to see the point of view of not one but two Ancients and we get a bit of a different take on how age and time change angels, even Archangels. It makes you want to go back and reread the series through a different lens, something Nalini Singh is always good at doing at the most unexpected times.

I wasn't always in tune with Alexander and Zanaya in terms of their love relationship. For me it worked best when one or both of them allowed themselves to be emotionally vulnerable and relaxed with the other, which didn't happen too often for the first half of the book. I could see why they didn't always work. I liked them both as individuals, but I didn't feel the all consuming chemistry/passion that was supposed to keep bringing them back together. The second half/second chance part, both during the battle against Lijuan and then after Zanaya resurrects from her injuries ten years later, felt like a better romance to me. Softer and more tentative in many ways, two people who know they've made mistakes and aren't sure how to keep from making them again. For all of that, I felt like some things changed too easily the second time around. They decided they weren't going to fight and were going to get along and that was what happened. Of course, it wasn't entirely that easy, and there was a lot of growth that probably finally matured into the relationship, but in someways, it really did feel like it was that easy, which I didn't like. After everything the end of the book was more of a 'and now things are fine' than 'we've worked really hard and will keep working at it but are now happy'. Unusual for Singh, who usually torments her characters into the worst possible corners and then manages an out that works without a deus ex machina feel, but makes you feel like the characters (and you as the reader) worked really hard to reach a deserved happy ending.

In the end I was conflicted about this book (as this review probably shows!). It's a Nalini Singh book, so I want to love it. I liked having backstory on Alexander filled in and seeing pieces from other people's eyes. I loved the surprise scene where we discover Nassir's origins. I liked Zanaya and (usually) Alexander as individuals. I loved the emotional scenes where Alexander lets his guard down and shows his vulnerabilities to Zanaya- those were maybe some of the most romantic and well written in the book, in my opinion. The world building, usually Singh's strongest suit, was an afterthought in this book, which was disappointing. The up and down relationship wasn't as emotionally convincing or absorbing as Singh's books usually are. I guess in a long series there will always be at least one book that doesn't resonate for someone, and this book just didn't fully do it for me. I hope others feel differently.

Alexander and Zan have been connected for centuries. They have loved, they have argued, they have parted but they always find their way back into each other's arms. But have the pushed the envelope one time too many?
Archangel's Resurrection is the latest installment in Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series. I enjoyed getting to know Alexander better. He has only loved one person but it hasn't been easy for either of them. Their childhood scarred them in ways that time made hard to move past, especially since they had so much time to live. It made it difficult for them to resolve their issues since well they legitimately have all the time in the world. I love that Ms. Singh should them that wasn't quite true. I loved seeing how Zani and Xander got to where they are and whether they wanted to work for a future together. I enjoyed seeing the history and the determination of two archangel's to find a healthy way.

Despite my slow introduction to Alexander and Zanaya's turbulent romance that spans eons and eons, I was soon emersed in a world that I love and getting to know the two characters who were both as unrelenting and sometimes stubborn to their own determent. The love and passion between the two Archangels was combustible from the very first eye contact.

But while their love was evident, this book shows that sometimes, love isn't enough, and while they always managed to find their way back to one another, Alexander and Zanaya, two powerful, warrior angels who do not bow and do not bend, may be their own worst enemies on the path to each other.

My favorite part of the book was seeing other fave characters from the series in the eyes of different characters. We also get to see a lot of Archangels who are already ancients when we meet them as younger angels, before their ascension, or get to see some angels as children which was awesome!

*Warning, minor spoilers* I couldn’t figure out how to avoid them and write this review.

Honestly, I read this book two weeks ago and I still have no idea how to write my review. When couples are described as having an epic love story, those just pale in comparison to Zani and Alexander’s story, which literally spans millennia. How do you write a review about that?

I made the mistake of not going back and rereading Archangel’s War before this book. Events in that previous book effect the story of this one. And there’s a ten year jump from Archangel’s Light to the current day of this story too. Although it doesn’t throw the reader so much because we’re talking centuries of the love story. Usually flashback are not my favorite but they’re so necessary to this story. We need to see Alexander and Zani in different stages of their lives, from young angels to Alexander’s accession, to them becoming a couple, Zani’s accession, her sleep, Alexander’s sleep, and finally, the events that bring them together again.

To be honest, I cried 99% of this book. This love story, it is so raw and epic. I have such difficulty finding the words to describe it. It’s like it’s too big for us mere mortals to understand or grasp. The connection, the passion, the beauty of their relationship is so encompassing. And yet there are things that tear it apart, little hurts that fester, choices and jealously that chip away at that bond.

*Spoiler*

There are times where Alexander and Zani are not together, are not a couple, even though they still love each other, and there are times where they seek out others. Its so the opposite of what we’re used to in romances and in Nalini Singh’s books that it was hard to grasp and read and yet it made sense in their relationship. And if you read the earlier books, you realize that Alexander’s son is not Zani’s so maybe the surprise and initial gut punch shouldn’t have been as shocking. It’s hard to accept the choices they made and yet it makes sense. We’re looking at a passionate relationship between two very powerful people that extends past human remembrance.

*Spoiler done*

In comparison to the epic adventures of the earlier parts of the book, the current setting and plot felt a little dull at times. The threat to Alexander and Zani didn’t feel as strong as what they had already faced. I wanted them to clean that issue up and focus on fixing themselves. And I was more intrigued by the hints of what occurred in the ten years between the previous book and this one. I honestly think the next book, (please be more Illium and Aodhan) will be set in those ten years.

It’s rare for a Nalini Singh book to be less than 5 stars for me and this one definitely doesn’t break that trend. It’s just a very different love story than anything she’s written and I certainly recommend having the tissues ready before reading it.

“Archangel’s Resurrection” is the 15th book in Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series, and it follows Alexander, Archangel of Persia, and Zanaya, Queen of the Nile, through their impossible love story. We see them grow up, grow together, and grow apart out of necessity. Starting before they’re ascended to archangels and ending in a distrustful happily ever after, this romance is worth the eons it took to make.

Is it so wrong of me to want someone to love me as much as Alexander loves Zani? Is it? Okay, okay, so first things first: I am new to this series, but I did my research before reading this advanced reader copy (ARC)—and by that I mean I read summaries for the other books and decided to be open to any plotlines I might have missed. Basically, I got comfortable with not knowing.

I would not call this a standalone novel by any means, but I do give it credit where credit is due: you don’t need much background story to understand and appreciate this story Nalini Singh has brought together. It was a bit slow-paced for my liking, but I love the characters’ introspection, I feel like I got to know them so well (or perhaps old readers already knew them, but they were all new to me).

Based on what I saw from Nalini’s writing, I would highly recommend this book and this series. I didn’t believe I would enjoy this book as much as I did, especially this being my first exposure to the series. I don’t have time to grab this series right now but I am so tempted to tackle it on, page-count be damned.

Nalini Singh, you could have warned me that I would need tissues when reading Alexander and Zanaya’s book. I was not prepared and found myself putting down the book to regroup myself after certain scenes I read in this book. That’s okay, though, because I managed to get through the waterworks and power through finding out why Alexander and Zanaya’s relationship is one that I will never forget.

Storyline/My Thoughts: Now I know some readers were hoping for a continuation of Bluebell and Sparkle’s storyline after reading their book. Still, I was more than happy to have Alexander’s story and find out why he and Zanaya had such a difficult time together initially. Yes, this is a book where the couple goes through a lot together, and everyone around them sees them as a couple that shouldn’t be together since they are bad for each other. They tend to get together and break it off. They have their reasons, which are touched on in their book. I was at first reading their book, wondering how these two would manage to work together if they constantly were walking away from their love for each other; then, I found out why they needed time. Their love never disappeared even thousands of years later; they still were madly in love.

I’ll say this first if you have not read the Guild Hunter in chronological order, I highly recommend you do because this book will have scenes from different perspectives from previous books in the series. For instance, you will miss out on Lijuan and her crazy self, why the Cascade happened. Ancients and archangels wake during the Cascade early, and one of them happens to be Alexander’s long-lost love, Zanaya, who he is still mad at for leaving him.

There are quite a few time jumps in this book because Nalini Singh has to cover thousands of years in this fictional world she’s created for these characters. She doesn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to explain how Alexander and Zanaya met and why they constantly fight for their love for each other.

Poor Alexander and what he had to endure for being without Zanaya for so long after she went to sleep and then losing her in the Cascade, he was happy to have her back. He didn’t care if she risked having darkness after what happened to her. He loved her. He would do anything to prove himself to her. Zanaya had her reasons for always walking away from Alexander. They both wanted different things. She also knew that Alexander was all about power, and she wasn’t.

What I loved most about this book is how Zanaya fell for Alexander’s grandson when she finally met him. Don’t even start with how Nalini Singh had my heart drop towards the end of the book and what she did to a certain character. Did you have to put a specific character through that? Hadn’t he been through enough? I was worried.

I know though Nalini Singh would make my heart feel better, the horrible darkness plaguing the Archangels of this world would be somewhat defeated. I’m anxious, though, after this book, where Nalini Singh is going to take us next. Yes, I would love another Bluebell and Sparkle book, but there are other characters I’m curious about too. I need everyone’s book that is mentioned throughout this series. Everyone deserves a HEA. This book gets 4.5-stars from me. I love this world that Nalini has created. This series is everything to me, and I’m so glad that Nalini wrote it. It’s the series I go to when I feel myself going into a reading slump. I love rereading it.

Standalone or Part of Series: It’s part of the Guild Hunter series, and I highly recommend reading in order.

Steam/Spice: 🌶 🌶

Trope(s): Fated Mates. Second Chance at Love.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you enjoy UF/Paranormal Romance books, this series is for you.

In the aftermath of the Cascade and a global war, two ancient archangels are key to stopping a growing, quiet threat. Their history is a tumultuous love through the ages and pasts that bring them together and tear them apart, but now it is for the last time. Another angelic pair who came from the sidelines as series characters take center stage for a new story in the Guild Hunter world.

Archangel’s Resurrection is the fifteenth of a series that works best in order since there are ongoing series plotting, characters, and relationships making up the backbone of this story.

Both the lead characters were introduced during the archangel war and the situation in the present story thread continues from that time. However, these are ancient archangels with a rich past so Nalini Singh leaves the reader at the point of Zanaya’s death and takes the reader back to Alexander’s childhood to show why he became who and what he did and introduces Zanaya’s story from the moment she enters military training and already has baggage from her childhood, too. They are attracted and suspect they can be something special together, long before they get their chance. And then, these two fierce, strong-willed people spend centuries of growing as powers and coming together in great love only for an equally great parting.

Their story is long and rich and involves other established and loved figures in the series. Alexander’s best friend is Calliane and his general is Titus’ mother, he is there when Rafael is still making his climb to power and it is Rafael and Elena’s love that shows Alexander and Zanaya another way to love. I enjoyed meeting Zanaya, Queen of the Nile’s best friends and how they helped keep her from going cold. There is also the side story of Alexander’s brother, Osiris, and Naasir’s connection.

But, at the heart are two powerful, immortal beings who might be all that, but they are flawed and struggle to figure out how to be archangels and have a loving relationship. Nalini Singh wrote this part so well. I felt their age and agelessness, but felt the connection to everyday struggles people face, too.

All in all, it was an incredible journey with Alexander and his Zani and I want more Guild Hunters stories. I always struggle to categorize this series because it feels like urban fantasy and yet there are multiple romances presented in individual books so it could be paranormal romance. I guess that means it will have a wider audience appeal and I heartily recommend it to both camps.

Thank you for Netgalley and Berkley Pub for this earc

This book is number 15 in this series and to be honest, I was bored for most of it
I think the big part of it was the fact that the relationship between the main characters happened over the span of a thousand of years and because of it, I really didn’t feel the love.

I didn’t think they were right for each other at all. I get that sometimes you have two strong people in the relationship but every time they would get together, they would just hurt each other more and that’s never healthy. I felt like there was a lot of repetition, every time they had a conversation about how much they loved each other. Like the first 70 percent of this book was just one scene written over and over again with “time gaps” in between.

We did get to see a little bit of what was happening with the rest of the world but it wasn’t enough to save this story.

I also very much couldn’t believe in the fact that after all the “on again. Off again” this time around their relationship would work. Just didn’t sit right with me

I loved being back in this world but I did wish there was more of the characters we loved from earlier books. Overall still a solid four stars.

What happens when love isn’t enough to keep two angels together? That’s the question in Archangel’s Resurrection. Archangels Alexander and Zanaya have loved each other for millennia, their passion as furious as their breakups. It’s an endless cycle of love and heartbreak until Zanaya Sleeps, leaving Alexander alone. Now a Cascade unlike any other wakes Zanaya and Alexander is there. That eons have passed makes no difference in their love, but they can’t continue on like they have always done. For this time is their last chance to get it right.

Nalini Singh delivers a love story of two stubborn souls who have to learn from their past in order to make a relationship work. I absolutely loved seeing Alexander and Zanaya from youth to present. They are Ancients and their history is vast and complicated. It was a delight seeing Alexander as a young angel; how he learned, formed friendships that lasted through time (including that with Caliane). Zanaya, though centuries younger than her love, has just as long and storied a history. I was delighted by the first half of the book, getting to see their pasts and just the sheer history of their lives. They are millennia older than the angels we’ve come to know and love and I was fascinated by the worldbuilding Singh did. Both Zanaya and Alexander have a different perspective from the other angels we’ve seen so far.

Whether their love can survive is never a question for Alexander and Zanaya. It’s if they can live with each other. The natural repellant that comes from two archangels being in such close quarters is not their only problem. They clash as fiercely as they love and now, in the present, after Zanaya is deeply wounded in battle it has come to the final chance for the lovers. They have to work at their relationship; sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s not. No matter how stubborn they both are, I liked that they worked for their happily ever after. They own up to their faults and learn to grow. And through it all is a core of love that shines bright.

There’s a darkness lingering in the background thanks to the aftermath of Lijuan’s reign of terror, but that comes second to the love story. I won’t spoil the overarching plot except to say it’s OK but not incredibly exciting if you’ve been reading the series. For me personally, I’ve had about as much of Lijuan as can hold my interest and I’m more than ready to move toward something new. I was far more interested in the new characters we meet who are near and dear to Alexander and Zanaya. And I definitely enjoyed getting a different take on the archangels and their nature from the perspective of two Ancients. I finished Archangel’s Resurrection a well-satisfied reader and I’m very much looking forward to seeing where Singh takes the Guild Hunter series next.

Guild Hunter is a long running series that started in 2009 that focuses on the world of the archangels in our world that started out with main character Elena, vampire hunter. Archangel's Resurrection is already the 15th book set in this world. And I have not read any other before this book. I was reassured that I could read this without having read any of the others.

Archangel's Kiss is a standalone set in the world of the Guild Hunter that follows two side characters, Alexander and Zanaya. Their romance spans over many eons and is the focus of this story.

While I did not care for their instant attraction, I did absolutely appreciated that Alexander realized that Zanaya was still much more in her teens when they met and that a relationship at that moment was very inappropiate. He stayed away, and even she realized that at some point. And when their romance does start it is not without a hickup. They are not always good for each other, both strong willed, but they always gravitate towards each other. I liked the realism of their relationship in that.

I also loved seeing Alexanders family and the other (arch)angels around them. It was interesting to meet some characters and seeing the whole story of Alexander. I feel like they haven't been a huge part of the story of Elena so far as we saw Elena only briefly in this story.

I was not as invested in the plot of defeating the big bad. I feel like we only got such a little bit of that whole story as the story focused on the romance. And I think that this story would work better for those that have read the whole series up until this point.

Regardless, as the plot was such a small bit of the whole story, I did enjoy reading this story for the realistic relationship and the fun side characters.

Archangel's Resurrection is the fifteenth book in the Guild Hunter series and is a story of a romance between two immortal beings that share thousands of years of hope, battle, and temptation. This was truly so beautiful and addicting.

I loved the Mortal Instruments series so I am all for a romance with angels fighting the bad monsters and I thought this book sounded right up my alley. I was so very wrong. The author just tells us what is going on without showing us. Let me tell you the first third of the book so you can skip it. And by the way it is over a span of thousands of years. They can't be together yet because Zanaya is too young, now a thousand years has passed and they are together, falling out, back together, falling out, back together, falling out, back together, falling out, back together, falling out, sleep, back together. I'm not sure if this is considered a spoiler so I will mark it just in case (view spoiler) Where is the plot? And they think they grow as people each time but they don't. This continues on throughout the book too. On again, off again. Not much of a romance book. The book does not flow very well either. I am reading and then the next sentence just says 200 years pass. There are multiple parts of the book and it is like reading different stories or something. The whole thing is just a toxic relationship that I didn't want to read about any more. Things did start happening about halfway through but it is hard to care about a couple that just shouldn't be together.

"...to protect those who were weaker lay at the heart of what it meant to have honor."

"It seems I'm not built for a gentle and kind love. I'm built for war. So is he. And that was why they were forever doomed."

Alexander, Archangel of Persia, and Zanaya, Archangel of Egypt known as the Queen of the Nile have a love story that goes across millennia. Both fierce warriors, Alexander and his Zani’s relationship was filled with fire. fury and a violent passion taking them to the very heights and depths of love with near cataclysmic results. Weary and near her breaking point, Zanaya had gone into Sleep despite Alexander’s anger at her decision refusing to make that choice at the with this woman he so loved.

When Lijuan’s horrific actions during the Cascade of Death cause the Sleepers to be awakened, Alexander and Zanaya fight in the desperate Archangel battle force to once and for all end her reign of evil and destruction. Despite Zanaya’s battle prowess, Lijuan overpowers her taking away her brilliant life right in front Alexander’s eyes. The very eerie and strange sleeping Seer, Cassandra, takes Zanaya and other gravely wounded archangels into a special guarded sleep. Sometime later, Zanaya wakes again to a new world much changed for her and the man she has loved and fought with for eons. Zanaya and Alexander are determined not to make the same mistakes of their fighting past while they deal with some aftereffects Lijuan left behind, some of which are connected to Zanaya in a possibly devastating way. Archangels who are lovers cannot spend too much time together before things become lethal; however, Alexander and Zanaya had taken that warring nature to a higher level so they have even more to overcome.

The first part of this story is set in the past with a detailed history of Alexander and Zanaya from the beginning when they are young angels to each Archangel’s ascension. Alexander is quite a bit older than Zanaya causing him to wait a long time to be with her even before her rising. Details are also filled in for other events such as Alexander’s brother, Osiris, and his cruel experiments. The rest of the story is present day after Zanaya awakens again focusing on this couple finding a way forward without all the pain, anger, and anguish of their past love story.

Fans of this series will be well pleased to read Alexander and Zanaya’s story and get more details about some of the beloved main characters including Raphael, Calliane, Titus, and others who were the focus in previous books. Alexander and Zanaya’s complicated dance and fierce devotion to each other while clashing as hard as they loved has all the action, excitement, and heartfelt romance that readers enjoy with this series.
