Historical cozies are so much fun. And Bright makes writing in a historical setting look so easy. Blending intrigue and suspense, Death Down the Aisle takes Eleanor on another mystery. This successfully creates suspense with a timetable leading up to a wedding. Cozy mystery lovers need to pick this book up immediately.
Verity Bright never disappoints.
This series is always such a delight to read, with loads of fun history lessons and lovable characters paired with a light murder mystery.
I tend to prefer the books that focus more on setting in this series, and this one isn’t great for that, but it’s still always fun to spend time with Eleanor and Clifford and, of course, Gladstone!
The denouement was a bit contrived and goofy in this one, but the mystery itself and the solve were fun and satisfying, and the historical notes were—as is always the case with this series—exceptional. The history of breach of promise suits (as well as the inclusion of one as an important plot point in the book) was utterly fascinating.
An enjoyable read for me. This was a new read to me. I enjoyed the characters, especially the main character. Five stars!!
Such fun! I loved seeing characters return from earlier books in the series and quite frankly Gladstone steals the show!
This is one of my favorite series. This is book 11 in the Lady Eleanor Swift series. I’m not normally a historic fiction fan but this series set in the 1920’s has caught and held my attention. Lady Eleanor is bridesmaid to best friend Constance but there’s a delay when the groom is accused of murder. There is also the women of the village who are demanding equal treatment with jobs on the local police force. Eleanor is in charge of the local demonstration. Will the two be fixed in time for the new wedding date? Can be read as a stand alone.
This is one series that I never tire of and it’s always a joy to dive back into another adventure with Lady Swift. Light, funny and with just enough red herrings to keep me guessing right to the end, it is the perfect piece of escapism that I always look forward to. These books are like putting on your cosiest pj’s and sipping a hot chocolate whilst curled up on your favourite hair. They are the perfect bedtime read whenever I’m feeling a little low and in need of a friend.
This time we meet Eleanor just as she is running late for a very important fitting, she is bridesmaid to good friend Constance who is marrying the man of her dreams, Lord Peregrine Davencourt. Of course we can’t have Lady Swift without some investigating to do and so it’s not long before a body is discovered and poor Peregrine is under suspicion for murder. Constance is devastated and begs Eleanor to get to the bottom of things and clear her fiancé’s name.
Each one of these delightful novels give us the opportunity to get to know the characters a little more. It really does feel like meeting up with old friends again. I really enjoyed this one and I’m now looking forward to the next. Another great read from Verity Bright.
I've kept up with this series and read every single installment so far- and to no ones surprise, Lady Eleanor Swift is a blast this time as well! She is such a great lead and extremely endearing in her interactions with both Clifford and DCI Seldon. Not to mention this was a really fun mystery and I enjoyed the storytelling! I will be getting the net book in this series as well!
Lady Eleanor Swift is back for more high society hi-jinks in Verity Bright’s latest captivating 1920s mystery, Death Down the Aisle.
Lady Eleanor isn’t usually a big fan of grand social occasions, but she does love a wedding. With her dear friend Constance about to marry the most eligible bachelor in town, Lord Peregrine, Eleanor is absolutely giddy with happiness and excitement. But Eleanor soon realises that she should not go overboard with the confetti, because the big day is ruined by the bridegroom being arrested for murder before he has even set foot in the church! As if there haven’t been enough surprises, it turns out that Lord Peregrine had been engaged to another woman called Daisy Balforth, whose body has been found at the local inn! Worse, Peregrine was discovered kneeling over her as she drew her last breath making him suspect number one!
This might be the scoop of the century for the gutter press, but with a distraught Constance begging Eleanor to clear her soon-to-be husband’s name, Lady Swift finds herself putting her sleuthing hat on in order to get to the bottom of another perplexing mystery! Constance insists that Peregrine is innocent and that he wouldn’t hurt a fly, but there is clearly more to this story than meets the eye because his father is attacked on the golf course!
With dashing Detective Seldon and trusty Gladstone by her side, Eleanor will move heaven and earth to find out whodunnit – before another body is found!
I am a huge fan of Verity Bright’s Lady Eleanor Swift historical mystery series and Death Down the Aisle is another immensely satisfying installment I devoured in one sitting. Witty, stylish and deliciously readable, Death Down the Aisle sees the fabulous Lady Eleanor in fine form as she finds herself caught up in yet another murder, which she once again solves with elegance, panache and intelligence.
An absolute delight from start to finish, Death Down the Aisle is another winner for Verity Bright – roll on the next title in this first-class series!
Verity Bright is back with the latest addition, Death Down the Aisle, to her wonderful Lady Eleanor Swift Mystery series. Eleanor has travelled for the wedding of the season but trouble is afoot from the moment they arrive…the groom has been arrested for murder! Any hope of staying out of the investigation goes out the window as Eleanor is beseeched by the bride to prove the groom’s innocence and get the wedding back on track.
In no time at all, Eleanor finds herself on the hunt for the true killer. The victim’s identity reveals a secret and the mystery has a number of big reveals about the various characters.
As always, the dialogue amongst the characters sparkles and the mystery is an interesting one! It’s a page-turner and I read it straight through. I had hoped to see a little more of our favourite Inspector and do hope he has a staring role in the next novel. If you love historical mysteries, cosy and well-written, this one is for you! It’s four out of five on the enJOYment scale and highly recommended.
Once again this was a most enjoyable read. In yet another new environment, Eleanor, with her inimitable Clifford and delightful bulldog, Gladstone, head off to the wedding of the season.
It soon becomes evident that the wedding is not going to plan when the groom is arrested for murder! In a complicated plot with a number of twists and turns, this is definitely a case of the past coming back and having quite an impact on the present. Perhaps a larger role for Seldon in some of the future mysteries (and some movement on the personal front) would be appreciated. I also missed the village folk in this one, they add so
This series is so enjoyable, I highly recommend this book and the series. It's 4 out of 5 for me!

This is #11 in the series, the 4th one I’ve read, and my favorite so far! With a likable heroine – Ellie, also known as Lady Eleanor Swift – and her amazingly dependable, knowledgeable, and proper butler Clifford, there is no mystery that they can’t solve.
And in this episode, intelligent and independent Ellie is asked to solve not only a murder, but assaults and a kidnapping. Since this takes place in the mid-1920s, Ellie must deal with stereotypical male attitudes about women. But with the help of Clifford, her household staff, and heartthrob Detective Chief Inspector Hugh Seldon, this cozy mystery kept me on the edge of my seat.
Death Down the Aisle is the 11th Lady Eleanor Swift cozy mystery by pseudonymous writing duo Verity Bright. Released 31st Aug 2022, it's 266 pages and is available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book (and the rest of the series) are currently included in the KU library to borrow and read for free.
This is such a lightly humorous and refreshing read. The entire series is just perfect for lifting the spirits and is wonderfully entertaining throughout. The style is reminiscent of earlier golden age inter-war mysteries. It's irreverent, with an appealing ensemble cast of amateur society sleuth Lady Eleanor and her butler/dogsbody Clifford whom she inherited along with her title from her late uncle as well as assorted society friends and servants. Gladstone the elderly bulldog also makes an appearance in this installment, bow tie and all, as Lady Eleanor's "plus one" at the society wedding of the century. Even more scandal ensues when the bridegroom is arrested before the nuptials when he's found crouched over the body of the other woman to whom he was engaged. (Egads!). Eleanor is soon on the case and woe betide the criminals.
It's a fast and undemanding cozy; the language is clean, the crimes are not written violently or explicitly and the denouement is satisfying and well written. For readers looking for verisimilitude in dialogue and action, be warned, this series is full of modern vernacular and sensibilities. Eleanor fraternizes with the servants and runs a shockingly lax estate.
Four and a half stars, a truly fun romp. There are now 11 extant books in the series, with the 12th due out in late Nov 2022. This is a prime candidate for binge reading. Although each of the books is self contained, I recommend reading them in order (though it's not absolutely necessary). Not a troublesome exercise since they're all currently available to borrow on kindle unlimited, if one is a subscriber.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
⭐⭐⭐⭐-- As always, love the covers on these books!
This has become one of my favorite historical cozy mystery series. I love Eleanor and Clifford and their relationship and banter. I love the staff at Henley Hall. I love Gladstone her dog. The writing is always excellent. I love the setting (time period) and the historical details. ❤️ That said, this was probably my least favorite I have read to date. The mystery just didn't hold my interest as much as previous books. I am also not a fan of slow burn romances and the romance between Hugh and Eleanor is like watching paint dry. However, there was a snail move forward in their relationship in this book, so 🤞🏻 these authors start to move these two forward a bit faster. All in all though, I continue to love this series and can't wait to get my hands on the next installment. Especially as it is a Christmas themed one! 🎄

Verity Bright gets Lady Eleanor Swift into trouble again in her eleventh cozy set in 1920's England in Death Down the Aisle. lady Swift is a bridesmaid to a friend whose Saturday wedding is disrupted by the murder of the groom's former fiancee and lower class love. Of course the bride asks Eleanor to solve the murder and free her bridegroom from a murder charge. Eleanor works with her boyfriend Detective Selden to find the real murderer. Mayhem and mischief follows.
When a groom's former fiancee sues him for breach of promise & is found murdered, it opens a hornet's nest of hidden secrets and lies that Ellie, Clifford, & Seldon need to solve in this page-turning mystery.
The perfect series to escape the travails of the world. Another wonderful Ellie Swift mystery, offering plenty of the ingredients that returning reads are looking for. Spiffing. 4 stars.

Lady Eleanor Swift's friend Constance is due to get married in a week when her fiance is accused of a breach of contract. Has he acted dishonourably and can Ellie prove his innocence? Her efforts are further hampered by a series of deaths...
Death Down The Aisle is the 11th book in the Lady Eleanor Swift series by Verity Bright. It would work as a stand alone book but I can't imagine not wanting to read the whole series!
Nope, still not a wedding for Ellie and Hugh! The slowest romance ever? But this book is still full of delicious moments of love, care and respect between the pair that fans of the series like me are desperate to turn into a happy ending.
Of course the most striking relationship in the book is once again that between Ellie and her butler Clifford. He is unflappable, stoic and despairs in a kindly way at his mistress's behaviour but it is obvious he loves her dearly.
There are a wonderful host of suspects for Eleanor and Clifford to investigate. Class and gender play a crucial role as Eleanor investigates. Ellie defies convention at every turn, often putting herself in danger much to Clifford and Hugh's dismay. I enjoyed the historical detail which enhances the plot and character development.
Death Down The Aisle is a very enjoyable cosy murder mystery.
This is the 11th in the series and whilst I have read the majority of the books I havent read all but it did not matter.
A cosy, fun murder mystery that gets you swept up in the glamour of the era. The characters are recognisable and I will be reaching for more books in the series.
Thanks for the arc.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of "Death Down the Aisle" in exchange for my honest review.
This is the 11th book in the Lady Eleanor Swift series and once again it is a wonderful adventure with Ellie and her butler Clifford. Wherever Ellie goes it seems murder happens. She is a bridesmaid for her friend Constance Grainger when before the wedding the groom is accused of murdering a former girlfriend. DI Hugh Seldon asks Ellie and Clifford to help because his hands are tied and there aren't enough police officers to investigate. This ties in with Ellie's latest project with the WI - trying to get women on the police force.
The wedding has Ellie wondering about her own future with Hugh as they seem to grow closer during this adventure.
All our favourite characters are in this book - Master Gladstone, the "ladies of Henley Hall": Mrs. Trotman, Mrs. Butters, Polly and Lizzie.
3 stars.
Wasn't my cup of tea. I'm sorry.
It might be really enjoyable cause I thought it'd 3 stars.
