such.a cozy beach read! its a light read with no spice and no crazieness. it was perfect for this time of year. highly recommend.
Lila moves to the small seaside Cornish village to escape recent traumas and begins working for the larger than life Serafina in her café. When Serafina unexpectedly dies, the town mourns. Then, Serafina's son Nathan upsets locals with rent increases. Laced with secrets, friendships, and community spirit, Secrets of Magpie Cove is a romance and magical getaway read with an idyllic cover. Fortunately, it's a series, but this story can stand alone. Absolutely lovely!
This was a lovely story. Lila has settled into Magpie Cove to go to pastry school but when her boss suddenly dies her son, Nathan, comes and takes over. Changes, so many changes. All he looks at is the bottom line. That is until Lila opens is eyes to what is going on around him. A lovely community, a budding friendship and romance. Will Lila and Nathan find their way before everything and everyone in Magpie Cove changes too much?
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Audiobooks have so much to do with the narrator, and I did not like the narrator of this book it distracted me from the book, and therefore I did not finish the book. Maybe I will try again when it comes out in print.
A wonderful book crafted by a master story teller and narrated with style and imagination. Parts of the story had me in tears and other parts I was crying with delight. Lisa has had a miscarriage but doesn’t want to talk about it. Will it cast a shadow over her life or is there fresh hope and love waiting for her with Nathan. Told with sensitivity and I enjoyed every word.
What a lovely sweet story. Having just returned from Cornwall, it was a great holiday read. Not a lot of action but just a nice book to while away the hours. Really well read on the audio version with the right amount of 'voices' and accents without being annoying. Well done.
This was a lovely book, which was pleasant, easy to read and enjoyable.
Lila has suffered from a miscarriage and had moved to Magpie Cove for a new lease on life, escape from a difficult relationship and cheap rent nearby to where she is studying her patisserie course.
What Lila did not expect to find in Magpie Cove, was love, happiness and her future.
Thankyou to Netgalley and Saga Egmont Audio for my advanced audio copy in exchange for my honest review.
3 Stars: It was a good book and well-crafted. I would recommend it to the right person.

A quaint small town Cafe really brings the town together. The characters in this book are really the main focus and everybody knows everyone in town.
Even though Lila has only been in Magpie Cove for a little while, it is her new home. It almost seems like this friendly place that makes you forget about your problems.
The Lila and Nathan relationship is interesting. She is managing the Cafe while going to school and he is now the new owner after his mother died. He is definitely a numbers kind of guy and Lila is all about the people. Bring on the conflict! Let's just say that some changes don't go over very well.
Overall this is a feel good book, even if I would have loved some romance as an addition.
Thank you to Saga Egmont and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this Audiobook for my honest review.
I really enjoyed the narrator of this audiobook! You knew from the start that Nathan and Lila would get together but the developing relationship was great to read. This story told the life of the elderly without making it light and fluffy but how tit really is with little food and almost no support. A little bit of everything in this book dealing with real people and real life. I enjoyed it so much that I wasn't ready for it to end.
Lately i have listened to more and more Audio books and Secrets f Magpie Cove is absolutely one of my favourites in this genre.. The narrator, Katie Villa is brilliant. She really brings the characters and the Cove to life. Her accents are superb and you really get a wonderful sense of love and community in the way she delivers the book..
Lila finds a new life in Cornwall in Magpie Cove and is loving life, taking courses in Cookery and patisserie lessons. Working in a café with the lovely Serafina. When Serafina passes away Lila finds herself dealing with a rather grumpy and non to friendly Nathan, Serafina's son. He comes from London and his view on the café is to get cheaper products and move customers out after an hour. He has no community spirit at all and Lila finds him so frustrating. He doesn't seem to care about anyone or anything as long as he is making money he's
fine. This is not an ethos that sits well with Lila so why on earth is she feeling some kind of frisson every time he touches her?
I thoroughly enjoyed how this isn't your typical love story, romantic fiction. it has reality aplenty, no one is flawless and wonderful. they are believable and loveable, especially the "elderly" couple Sid and her girlfriend. Topics are wide ranging and touch on lesbian couples who had to get used to hiding their feelings in the past, love and friendship, miscarriage and a slow burn romance. I felt the pace was set just right and although some issues take a while to be resolved this just added to the realism. A great and gentle read.
Secrets of Magpie Cove is a welcome addition to Kennedy Kerr’s Magpie Cove series. Lila Bridges found herself in the welcome arms of Serafina da Costa when she arrived in the small seaside village of Magpie Cove. Coming off of a traumatic experience and a terrible break up, Lila had escaped her unfulfilled life and London to come to her aunt’s home in Devon to change direction.
In the past year before leaving London, Lila had found cooking as a salvation, taking Saturday classes while miserable in her IT recruiting job. Now she had discovered an intense course for patisserie in St. Ives, but needed a place to live with low rent and a part time job to support herself while completing the course. It was Serafina that helped with those things.
When Serafina has a heart attack some months later and passes, it is her London son Nathan that is the executor of her estate. But Nathan is a banker and doesn’t understand what his mother had created with her cafe and other endeavors. And, while Lila and Nathan certainly don’t see eye to eye about many things, there is obvious chemistry between them.
This is such a lovely story! Character development is so well done, the scenic west coast of Cornwall comes alive, and the story of so many folks and the missing pieces of their lives comes together in such a delightful conclusion.
I very much enjoyed this book, the tender telling of the people’s stories, and the poetic story told. I do recommend this book!
Lila Bridges is an aspiring pastry chef who recently moved to a cute town called Magpie Cove. While she finishes her training as a pastry chef, she works part-time for a town staple, Serafina, at her café. Unfortunately, Serafina passes away and her son, Nathan, comes to town to settler her affairs. While he is there, he starts making some changes that do not go over with visitors or the townspeople. Lila realizes how much Serafina did for the community and soon finds herself trying to help like Serafina did including letting Nathan know how is changes are going. Even though there is tension between Lila and Nathan, they soon both realize that they are drawn to each other even though the timing isn’t great and they don’t agree on many things. Overall, this was a lovely read. You get to know many of the people in town and as it goes on, you can see how tight-knit they all are. The slow romance between Lila and Nathan is sweet and also very realistic in how they know they need to ease into a relationship.
Lila’s live is finally on track. She is happy, she feels that she finally belongs. Small town Magpipe Cove has provided a safe place, a sense of community, friends and has started to heal her heart. But now everything is changing and everything is crumbling down. Can two broken souls with painful secrets help each other’s finely heal their hearts and find love, happiness and keep Magpipe Cove alive. The audiobook is amazing, the narrators makes and amazing job.
A light read with a wonderful small town feel which reminds people of the importance of community. Serafina was the hub of the community and her death left many of her friends and neighbors uncertain about their future. Lila Bridges moved to Magpie Cove after tragedy and now works part-time in Serafina’s Café whilst also studying to become a pastry chef. Serafina’s untimely demise has Lila and the regular customers uncertain about her future, especially when Serafina’s estranged son, Nathan DaCosta, inherits and brings in new money making ideas, so at odds with his Mum’s community spirit. Although Lila struggles to work with her new boss’s rules she is also attracted to him but as more changes to life in the community are imposed at his request she struggles with the impact of sharing the secrets they are both keeping. I enjoyed the setting and the description of the small town feel as well as being concerned for neighbors. There are many topics discussed in this book that are quite relevant to most communities. Gay and lesbianism has been around for a years and only recently been more acceptable. Caring for the elderly should be part of every community. Bullying is squeezed into this story as well! And miscarriage is quite common, yet many women feel so alone in this experience. Kennedy Kerr does a fantastic job incorporating it all into this one story..
Thank you to Netgalley, Kennedy Kerr and Bookouture.
I’m completely new to this series (huge mistake on my part, I’ll be looking out for the rest of the series) I was absolutely swept from Glasgow to Cornwall I could almost feel the beauty of the place. Lila, oh Lila is a beautiful soul, struggling to recover from the miscarriage that devastated her and the death of her friend and employer. She’s a good egg and I adored her kindly ways, but her strength in fighting for the rights of others. I loved the “elderly” friends and Lila’s lovely way and determination to make their lives better. I quite enjoyed Nathan’s character, but I’d have loved some more insight into his thoughts at times. Fantastic read, beautiful narration. I loved it! #Jorecommends.
I received an arc of the audio book from NetGalley and the publishers in return for an honest review. Thank you.
There were aspects of "Secrets of Magpie Cove" that I really liked, and others that didn't resonate with me at all.
I did enjoy the growth that both Nathan and Lila had to undergo before they really made an attempt at trying to be together. They each had things that they needed to deal with from their past before they had a solid foundation to build a relationship on. So that was great! And the exploration of how we each grieve in our own way was poignant as well as both characters mourned the passing of Nathan's mother.
As an introvert, overly flamboyant people seem to suck all the air from the room for me. So I found Oliver to be a bit much at times. But I also appreciated how supportive he was of Lila. It just seems that when someone is looking for constant affirmation and attention, there's something a bit wrong there... So they become more of a tragic character than a comic foil.
Anyway, my personal preferences aside, the writing was strong, the character development was there (at least for the love interests), and the story had a good arc to it. I just wasn't quite my cup of tea.
Thank you to Kennedy Kerr, Saga Egmont Audio and NetGalley for an advance reader copy.
This was a sweet short read perfect if you are looking for something a little lighter. I did not read the first book in the series but this was an easy stand alone book. At times the pace was a bit slow and I felt the tension with Nathan’s charactor went on too long. By the time Nathan came to his senses I was too disgruntled with him to change my opinion. I did love all of the other characters and fell in love with the sense of community amongst them. I would probably give a 3 1/2 rating overall.
Katie Villa did a fantastic job with narration and several styles of voices. Thankyou to NetGalley and Saga Egmont Audio for the ARC.
An utterly enchanting and emotional novel about love and romance. The author manages to infuse a thoroughly evocative atmosphere into a page-turner plot The overall feeling from reading this book is like being enveloped in a warm hug from that special someone in your life. Narration of this book was so good, brought the book alive for me and I easily followed the storyline. My cheeks hurt from smiling through this delightful book.
Lila has fled the city and is reinventing her life in Magpie Cove. She's attending patisserie school and working in Serafina's cafe. Serafina is a loving, outgoing, and kind woman who keeps the town going. When she passes, Lila is left with a lot of uncertainty, including whether or not she still has a job. When Lila's son takes over the cafe, things get even worse. Will Lila have to leave Magpie Cove?
This is a sweet and fairly uncomplicated romance, but it really doesn't need many complications. The descriptions of Lila's small-town life, her supportive friends, and her constant tension with Nathan make for a great story. I loved the inclusion of Lila's fight to help feed the elderly in her town and the descriptions of the food she was making in the cafe or patisserie school. The fact that so many people have food insecurities they might be keeping secret is a major theme in this book, to its credit. Lila's struggles to deal with a past miscarriage are explored as well. The characters are interesting and endearing. Anyone who loves small-town romances should plan a visit to Magpie Cove.
I listened to the audiobook and Katie Villa does a great job with the narration.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from Saga Egmont Audio via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and my opinions are my own.
I was very keen to listen to this audio book as it was set in Cornwall. Serafina runs a village bakery and cafe in Magpie cove She offers Lila a job, trains her as a patisserie chef and a place to live. Sadly Serafina passes away. Then along comes Serafinas son Nathan who wants to change the way the cafe is run - upsetting the locals!
All the characters in this book feel like family and friends and the story is wonderful, charming and engaging plus anything set in Cornwall wins my vote. This audiobook is narrated by Katie Villa who really makes Magpie Cove and all who reside there come alive. Thank you Saga Egmont audiobooks and Netgalley for my gifted copy.
