Story ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really enjoyed the developing relationship between Nathan and Lila. This was one of those books where I was so absorbed in it that it was over before I was ready for it.
First time I've heard of the author but after listening to this I brought The house of magpie Cove and the daughters of magpie Cove from kindle.
This was a pleasant read that didn’t have many surprises or twists, just a good, solid story in a charming setting. Right off the bat I enjoyed Lila’s choice of profession. I watch a lot of cooking shows, and I feel like this background actually gave me a lot of insight to her character. Lila wants to carry on the tradition set by Serafina, the late owner of a café that Lila works in. But Serafina’s son, Nathan, who inherited the café, has other ideas. There’s the usual conflict.. It was a nice read
After losing all she holds dear, pastry chef, Lila returns home to the magic of Cornwall. There she finds a job, and her footing, at Serafina’s Cafe; in time Lila even begins to believe she might be happy again. Then Serafina dies and ownership of the cafe passes to her son, Nathan, who seems to think the cafe is outdated and needs a big city makeover. Lila is doubtful about the changes and isn’t sue she even likes Nathan, but she needs the job, so perseveres. Against all odds the disparate duo are drawn together, but a secret from Lila’s past could destroy everything. Spend a day on the Cornish coast with Lily and I guarantee you’ll walk away with a smile
Slow burn, low heat, low stakes, small town romance. Easy, beach reading but I did wish the couple resolved their issues a bit earlier in the book.
This book is just fine.
It’s not super exciting. The romance is lukewarm at best.
Lila is a kind and caring character. She’s at Magpie Cove trying to overcome her past. She cares about the community and is ask trying to make sure they survive.
Nathan is the city kid thrust into a life he didn’t ask for. After his mother’s death he takes over her affairs and nearly ruins all of Magpie Cove. He does seem to have a change of heart at the end at least.
The one part I did appreciate about the book is the discussion of miscarriages. I love how it talked about Lila’s grief and trouble with moving on. It expressed many of the same thoughts & feelings I had after suffering through multiple pregnancy losses.
