Annie, her siblings, and their partners, spend three weeks at their parents home for their annual vacation.
Sunday, Annie's sister suddenly goes missing, and only Annie feels her disappearance is suspicious and she seems to be the only member of the family that is concerned. .
Sunday's ex husband makes an appearance at the house, and threatens to publicize a secret that Sunday was hiding, and is killed on his way home.
Annie is pregnant with the first grandchild, and begins to fear for her life and her unborn child's life.
In my opinion, this book was slow and the characters were extremely unlikeable. The older siblings were shallow and extremely nasty and uncaring.
I cannot imagine having an annual holiday at my parent's home with people that I don't like, who made my life miserable. And not to care about a daughter that disappears without saying a word? Totally unbelievable.
I feel that the Annie character could have been made into a stronger, more independent person, and also I would have brought Quinn more into the family centre. His character could be fleshed out much more.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a book that I just wanted to tell at the main character to just leave. Her family was beyond dysfunctional and just reading about them would creep you out. The ending had a couple of twists. Overall a good book.
I could not get into the authors writing style. Some parts of this book were good and others were slow and unneeded.
In the favorite Child by Katherine Graham we meet Annie her and her husband Michael are having their first child and her parents first grandchild. Every summer they spend 3 weeks with her big family and that’s where we find them when the book starts. Her dad is a guru of sorts and his specialty is family dynamics and relationships unfortunately his own family is dysfunctional. Annie has a sister name Sunday because she was treated special while they grew up it cost a great rift between the siblings childhood taunts evolve into adult hate and distain for their sister.. so when Sunday is treated uncharacteristically unkind by their parents and then goes missing the next day Annie finds it odd. Her siblings try to pass it off as if that’s just the way she is, but Annie isn’t buying it and the more clues she find the greater her concern becomes, but when the truth is uncovered she will not only see her family in a whole new light, some of them will even look like murderers. This book was so good and I was not at all prepared for where it went in an attempt to be the perfect family the dad created a group of dysfunctional people thankfully it makes for great reading because this book is definitely great reading! This is a total five star read. I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this ark I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this ar just know I am leaving this review voluntarily and please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.
Good book! This book had suspense, intrigue, a bit of a who done it and so many crazy twists! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my kindle! I also found myself yelling at my kindle! Lol I will definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
What a strange book! The main character’s behaviour is so weird, I just kept shouting at the book leave the house now & go to the police!! What a dreadful family
This psychological thriller is not like others I have read in that it was not predictable and was more focused on relationships and character development than many others. I liked the thorough description of the family, and found the narrator (one of the adult daughters) to be someone I was rooting for, although I didn't always understand why she chose to do the things she did. The family is strange which is part of the appeal of the book and what kept me reading. The last half of the book sucked me in, I finished it very quickly! Overall a quick read that I definitely recommend!
I received an ARC of, The Favorite Child, by Cathryn Grant. This is not a family, you want to be in. Sunday is missing, the parents favorite child, will she be found? Who took Sunday, or did she runaway?
There’s it much better than a family drama. Secrets that have been hidden, lies that are told. Not everything is as it seems. Is it ever?
This is a brilliant novel, fabulously written with characters that leap off the pages.
I really enjoyed getting settled down with this book and it didn’t disappoint. Highly recommend.
5 out of 5!
Annie is happily married and expecting her first child, and is on holiday by the coast with her family. Then her sister Sunday goes missing and she can't help being concerned. As she investigates, she realises some of her family aren't what they seem, and that she could be in danger... a thilling story about family and secrets that keeps you turning the pages. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. This is one of those books where the main character, Annie, totally got on my nerves. Sometimes I guess the author does this on purpose. Annie, who is pregnant, is on vacation with her husband, parents and siblings. Her sister, Sunday, was spoiled so much her whole life and always got more than her siblings. Annie remembers as a child how her older brother, Jake, was so mean to Sunday and talked about pushing her over the cliff to her death. As an adult, Annie begins to have nightmares about murder and someone being pushed off the cliff. When she starts a journal about her dreams, she realizes they are not dreams but reality. I enjoyed this book.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, from Inkubator Books and #NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to preview and review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
What a rollercoaster of a thriller, just like it should be. Cathryn Grant knows what fans what and delivers with panache every time.
Another great read from Cathryn Grant.
Wow what a family.
It appears that Annie is the only one who cares that her sister is missing.
This is a great suspense thriller, compelling until the very end.
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for my advanced copy.
An easy five star read.
Prior to this novel, I had never read a book by Cathryn Grant before. I was in between trips to the library when I saw this title immediately available on NetGalley. I was intrigued by the title, cover, and premise. I was not disappointed! A little bit “Rosemary’s Baby,” a little bit “Gaslight,” and a lot of family dysfunction are the hallmarks of this suspenseful novel. I definitely kept guessing and second guessing myself throughout: who was telling the truth? Did we have a reliable narrator? Who is sane and who isn’t? It honestly kept me wondering until the last page if everyone would turn out to be who they seemed. This was my first Cathryn Grant novel, but it won’t be my last! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
The Favorite Child by Cathryn Grant is a slow burn of a domestic thriller that held me captive from the word go. A twisty look at the secrets of families, and a reminder that no one ever really knows what goes on behind closed doors.
Annie is enjoying a family vacation with her husband, parents and siblings as she awaits the arrival of her first child. There has always been a resentment on the part of her siblings toward their sister Sunday, but when the favoured child goes missing, Annie cannot fathom how she is the only one who seems to care. Digging for the truth, Annie is prepared to alienate herself from her family, even if it means putting herself and her unborn child in danger.
This is a compelling and sometimes disturbing read of familial bonds and sinister secrets and, if you are like me, you will devour it.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an ARC.
Fantastic slow burn that picks up and turns into a total rollercoaster.
I found myself asking over and over, why does no-one care Annie's sister is gone? Let me tell you when you find out... you will be blown away!
Thank you Inkubator Books and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review (this review will be on GoodReads once the title is available). To start, I want to say that this book was good. It had good characters, good writing, and an overall good plot, it just did not have the great wow factor for me. But I have more detail into why that is.
The Favorite Child revolves around one specific family with the main protagonist, Annie (the youngest daughter) as the one we follow along with throughout the book during a vacation at the family’s coastal home. This family follows ideals that the dad believes to create the perfect family, but this family is hiding secrets that even these ideals are struggling to contain. The title comes from Annie’s sister, Sunday, who was treated better than the rest of the siblings during their entire lives. Sunday, who was extremely upset about something unknown to readers and Annie, did not get her way when she wanted to talk to her dad. The next day Sunday is missing and no one except Annie is concerned, and no one except Annie is concerned throughout the book. The book goes through Annie’s struggle to understand why no one else is concerned about Sunday disappearing and her “mission” to figure out what happened and why.
As I mentioned earlier, the plot was good. It fit everything that made me want to keep reading, but it was just that. I wasn’t surprised by the main climax or any of the revelations that happened throughout the book, yet I kept reading because I wanted to know if I was right with my initial thoughts and the ending was also one of the unexpected parts. Something that does stand out from this book is that it felt like I was actually in Annie’s mind and understanding her fears and worries, rather than just reading about Annie’s thoughts. Something I didn’t love about the book and why I am struggling with a rating is that it just felt like the story was there, it didn’t jump out at me. The writing was excellent and as I said, I felt like I could feel Annie’s thoughts, but other than that it just felt like the story took too long to develop and it needed an even bigger twist to make it a fantastic book.
Slow building thriller for mystery fans! I love this author’s book because she delves into fears that we all have and expands them through relatable characters.
Annie’s sister has gone missing. Why doesn’t anyone care?
Annie feels like she’s at a good place in her life. Happily married. Expecting her first child. Enjoying a vacation with her extended family at their beautiful coastal home.
But then her sister, Sunday, suddenly goes missing.
Annie is immediately concerned, but the rest of the family assure her that everything’s fine, this is the kind of thing Sunday does, she’ll be back.
But Annie knows in her heart that something is very wrong. And she won’t rest until she sees her sister safe and well.
As Annie digs for the truth she realises that some of the family are not what they seem. And as she draws closer to uncovering their horrifying secret. Annie finally understands that she and her unborn child are in terrible danger.
Really gripping psychological thriller totally enjoyed I read in one sitting totally recommend
Thank You NetGalley and Inkubator Books
I just reviewed The Favorite Child by Cathryn Grant. #TheFavoriteChild #NetGalley
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. I felt like the blurb was better than the book. I was expecting another story altogether. But it did have some good secrets, although I did seem to skim more than anything. It was ok.
