Two mysteries in one …

I so love to discover new authors, as each and every time it is a surprise, will their voice sooth you, intrigue you, make you wonder about, entrance you or move you.
Today, from the very first page, I was sucked into the story.
I have not read the first book, yet I did not felt lost, the characters quickly found their place and I followed their steps at their own pace.
As I am a romance reader first and mystery second, I was happy to discovered I missed not much about the heroes’ love affair.
Juliette with the family she comes from has her path all mapped out. They are all agents of the crown, so she will be.
Yet she is also a debutante, and crime, mystery and ballrooms do not always mix up well.
Plus, her at first unexpected counterpart is a bow-street runner, a world apart from her own. Still they manage to make it work, and while she is at time impeded by her social life, they find a way out.
Daniel has lead a life shackled to his benefactor’s whims, he has been more lucky than more but it came with a price and a lot of unanswered questions. Still he works to make the best of what he has been dealt as his tenure is reaching its end.
What is he to expect afterward, it will be a jump in the unknown.
Lady Juliette even if he fears nothing can come from his attraction to her is his ray of sunlight, a walking surprise. By working with her, he sees a different side of his task, one more stealthy and less predictable.

The mystery is quite complex, it was not until some details of the crime’s scene were solved that I began to suspect who was the culprit.
A well crafted mystery with many suspects and lot of twists and turns.
Along with that, Daniel’s life is reaching a wall, one with major changes and revelations behind.
I am now eager to read the next book as Daniel and Juliette will face new hardships in front of the latest developments in Daniel’s existence.

Millstone of Doubt is a “must read” second book in the Thorndike and Swann series by Erica Vetsch.
What a wonderfully twisty tale of intrigue. With suspects around every corner Daniel and Juliette join forces to bring down the killer of her best friend’s father. The case reveals much more than expected as they are pulled into a series of events involving discontented workers and rabble rousers which could put their lives at risk.
In the midst of the case circumstances increase their attraction to each other. I love the slow burn of their affection, the push pull of their difference in station, and ultimate confessions to each other.
This book is a totally satisfying combination of mystery and romance that kept me up until the very end. I look forward to more in the series and recommend it to all regency readers.
I received a courtesy copy from Kregel. This is my honest review of the book.

1816 What a tumultuous time, when things were starting to change in industry and the workers were afraid for their livelihood, of losing control over their lives and the lives of their families. The author has given us a story that highlights this dilemma and the nefarious deeds that arose from it. Did they truly believe that violence would get them what they wanted? Perhaps this is a lesson for our time as well.

These wonderful characters were a joy to get to know. A mystery that keeps you guessing, plenty of suspense and intrigue along the way and a little romance to round it out. Altogether a book you will not want to put down until finished!

This early copy of Thorndike & Swann Regency Mysteries #2 was received through Kregel Publications and NetGalley. These thoughts and impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.

Another wonderful regency mystery by Erica Vetsch. While I enjoyed the first book in the series, this one definitely had more oomph and I enjoyed it much more. However, I would recommend reading this series in order. While the story of this one stands well on its own, there were definite spoilers for the first book in this one and the character development builds some, so it's advantageous to read the first book first. This book follows along with the same characters. Juliette Thorndike is the daughter of an Earl and in her debut season, but also learning spycraft as an agent for the crown. Daniel Swann is a Bow Street detective, also an agent for the crown and approaching his 25th birthday when his mysterious patronage comes to an end. A lot of the open questions from the first book do get answered in this one and there is a new mystery afoot and interesting history as it regards industrialization. When a mill owner is murdered right before an explosion at the mill, Daniel questions whether the man had enemies, was engaged in untoward relationships, or if it was those who were considered anarchists and were against the technology he was bringing in that would replace people. The mystery had me turning pages, the romance was what a romance should be, the character growth was stellar and the faith thread was present. Themes of the Fatherhood of God as well as loss and grief were prevalent. All in all, this was a book with a rich story-line and enthralling characters that kept me turning pages. I would recommend to fans of inspirational historical fiction. Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of the novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

Another intriguing installment in the Thorndike and Swann mysteries. Lots of spy craft and one never knowing the whole truth. As secrets are revealed, so are asked many more questions.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

This is the first book I have read in this series and would recommend reading the first book first as I didn't feel I got to know Juliette much in this book which seemed to concentrate on Daniel and his 25th birthday. The mystery element was great the romance less so as it seemed to have happened all in book one which is slightly unusual as these types of books usual have a slow burn romance element which this missed. I'm interested to see where the next book goes because of this. Overall I found this had lots of action and mystery which kept me entertained and would recommend this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A (sweet) Regency romance pairs with an edge-of-your-seat murder mystery in a page turner with plenty of clues to piece together. Vetsch eschews the angst and slow-burn commonly infused in historical mystery relationships, relying instead on the murder itself and secrets from her hero's past to drive suspense while the detective couple advances smoothly toward their happily ever after. Published by a Christian house, the book's characters practice Christianity, but spiritual elements are smoothly incorporated with a light hand. A fun read for fans of the genre!

Millstone of Doubt features the duo of Detective Daniel Swann and Lady Juliette Thorndike.

This is the second in the Thorndike and Swann mysteries. If you haven't read the first, they mystery itself stands alone, but you will miss the build up of the relationship between the two.

This story is truly a mystery first and a romance second. The slow burn of the romance makes for a delightful, natural development. The mystery and the spy elements are on point as well. Even the characters individual growth is naturally timed. Anything faster would be untrue to the characters and the story.

The side characters, especially Uncle Bertie are fantastic and add to the richness of the story. The mystery in this story does not give much away in the reveal, though the clues are there if you are paying attention.

All in all I was delighted with this story and cannot wait for the third installment.

I received an early copy through the publisher and NetGalley and this is my honest review.

A cleverly crafted story with complex characters, set in Regency England that will entice any reader of historical fiction! I couldn’t wait to read Millstone of Doubt which is book number two in the Thorndyke and Swann Regency Mysteries, and it didn’t disappoint! Daniel Swann’s time as a Bow Street Runner may be coming to close, as the patronage which has directed his every step and given him his current job, ends at his 25th birthday. He is once again involved in another case involving the explosion of a mill and the mysterious death of the mill owner. He must solve this case quickly to help prove that he is capable of being a Runner (and an agent for the Crown) without the support of his mysterious patron, and more importantly before anyone else is killed. Lady Juliette Thorndike is best friends with Agatha, the daughter of the owner of the mill. She has been given explicit instructions not to investigate this murder, but when circumstances beyond her control thrust her into the middle of the case, she can’t help but use her abilities as a spy to help her friend before it’s too late. This book kept me thoroughly engaged to the very end. It was such a delightfully entertaining read! There were some surprises at the end which left me gasping aloud! The characters in their various roles, the blossoming romance, and the historical details were all woven together to tell a story rich in hope, love, betrayal, and intrigue. It is necessary to read book one- The Debutante’s Code, in order to gain an appreciation and understanding of what is happening in book two. I look forward to reading more books in this series. Thank you to NetGalley and Kregel Publications for the ARC of this book. All opinions within this review are my own.

I loved the second installment from the Thorndike & Swann Regency Mysteries series, Millstone of Doubt. It is exactly what I would expect from Erica Vetsch. Five stars.

Millstone of Doubt is yet another mystery from author Erica Vetsch. Socialite Lady Juliette Thorndike and bow-street runner Mr. Daniel Swann are teamed up yet again. This time trying to solve an explosion that has taken place at a local mill. The situation gets even more complicated. The mill’s owner is found murdered!

The dead man, Mr. Montgomery, is Juliette’s dear friend Agatha’s father. As the questions begin to try to put the pieces of this puzzle together, both Daniel and Juliette learn that Mr. Montgomery had secrets galore. Even his daughter had been kept in the dark!

This is an interesting tale to follow as Daniel and Juliette get closer to the truth. Before the end of this tale, Daniel will not only discover who killed Mr. Montgomery, but he will also learn who his own father is, after living years in the dark!

Set in 1816 London during the Regency period when titles and classes were of the utmost importance, Millstone of Doubt is a gorgeously written gentle mystery with romance, the second in the Thorndike & Swann Regency Mystery series. To me the mystery is secondary to the characters' actions and growth as well as reliance on God. Themes include several kinds of love (God, romantic, friendship, family), love, loss, courage and hope. There is always, always hope.

An explosion at the flour mill shakes the neighbourhood and the aftermath is detailed. Some lose their lives in that dreadful event. Unconventional Lady Juliette is in the thick of things and jumps right in to help, regardless of her high position. Her dearest friend Agatha, chivalrous Bow Street Runner Daniel and German aristocrat Heinrich support Juliette as she navigates life as a young debutante and a young woman of faith as she is often alone due to her parents' duties for king and country which unfortunately come first. She is born into privilege but it comes with a price. When murder is discovered, Juliette investigates as much as befits a lady of her standing...with a bit of extra inveigling. Turns out there were sinister happenings before the blast and her beloved Agatha loses so much. Detective Daniel requests the case but his professional footing is not quite certain. Romance blooms, layers of secrets are revealed, anarchy ensues and we learn about the characters in greater detail.

My favourite aspects include the historical detail such as architecture, clothing and transportation but also the social mores of the era and personal sacrifice add intrigue.

Historical Fiction/Christian Romance readers ought to read this lovely series. Do be sure to read the author's fantastic notes on her inspiration as well as recommended research into the Regency era (which has taken me down wonderful rabbit holes!).

My sincere thank you to Independent Publishers Group and NetGalley for the privilege of reading this tremendous escapist story.

Erica Vetsch is such a gifted storyteller. Millstone of Doubt showcases her ability to continue a story series and weave in mystery, intrigue, and delightful characters. This is a mystery with a sprinkle of romance, so be prepared to be swept away in the solving of the case. I love the premise of Lady Juliette being a spy in training with Daniel being a cop with the Bow Street Runners. Book one in the series really focuses on Juliette’s story and this book takes a deeper look at Daniel’s story. Their difference in class adds a fun dimension of layers and heightens how society attempts to dictate their interactions. I love the introduction of science to help solve the mystery as it truly felt like an early look at forensics. There is a strong message of hope and faith as they both learn to rely on their Heavenly Father. I highly recommend this book to all lovers of inspirational historical regency fiction. It is important to read these books in order so that you can best understand and appreciate the story and character development.

Millstone of Doubt is the second exciting, hard-to-put-down installment of the Thorndike and Swann Regency Mysteries series. As the saga continues, we find Bow Street Runner/Agent for the Crown Daniel Swann and debutante Juliette Thorndike embroiled in another cleverly crafted mystery in 1816 London. We watch anxiously as they work together to solve the murder of Juliette’s friend’s father and as their relationship progresses romantically and professionally. We also get answers to some important questions from the first book in the series and are left wanting to experience more adventures with this crew. As always, Ms. Vetsch immerses us in the elegant, yet socially restrictive, Regency world. Rich historical and scientific details and vivid descriptions bring the story to life and add authenticity to the narrative. A dash of romance, a bit of humor, and a gentle faith element add to the pleasure of the read. This book just joined The Debutante’s Code, the first book in the series, on my Best Reads list. I highly recommend this book and the series especially for fans of Regency mystery and romance. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

This is a review of Millstone of Doubt by Erica Vetsch. This is the second book in the series, but I will try not to put any spoilers. You must read the first book to understand this book, but I highly recommend both of them! This book will be released on September 20, 2022.

Lady Juliette Thorndike finds herself working in the family business alongside her parents and Uncle Bertie (Sir Bertram Thorndike) which involves working for the Crown of England after her debut as a debutante of England. She has finally been reunited with her parents, but they are swept away to work on another case for the Crown, so Lady Juliette finds herself alone again, but she continues her training with her uncle Sir Bertram Thorndike. This work continues to bring her into the path of Detective Daniel Swan, a Bow Street Runner, but whose path she doesn't mind crossing!

Detective Daniel Swann is called into investigate when Lady Juliette's best friend, Miss Amanda Montgomery's father goes missing, as Lady Juliette calls him in to investigate. Mr. Montgomery owns a mill in the area, so Detective Swann and Lady Juliette begin by checking his office to see if they can locate him. As the pull up outside the mill, an explosion happens, but thankfully neither Detective Swann nor Lady Juliette are hurt. They are shocked when they go in amongst the debris and they find Mr. Montgomery dead, but not from the explosion, but with a bullet hole in his head! So Detective Swann now has to solve a case of murder!

Also, in this story is the continuation of Detective Swann's story of being an illegitimate son and having a poor mother who worked as a servant, who received a mysterious benefactor at age 12 that took him out of the life he had known with his mother, and sent him to get his upper class education, and set him up in the career of his choice, which he chose the Bow Street Runners, and covered all his expenses but as a condition Daniel was estranged him from his mother which was a high price to pay. According to this agreement, his benefactor would remain anonymous, and Daniel must do anything his benefactor required of him, which instructions would be sent thru a lawyers office. All this was to be completed upon his 25th birthday, at which time the benefactor would stop being responsible for Daniel, and then he would stand on his own two feet. His job was also provided by his benefactor, so Daniel doesn't know if the man who hired him, Sir Michael, will throw him off the force because he resented Daniel being chosen for the job he wanted for his own nephew. So Sir Michael would be thrilled if Daniel was to lose his job, but the unknown is hard for Daniel, but he is hoping it will all come to light when he turns 25. Until then, he enjoys working alongside Lady Juliette as they work together to solve the murder of her best friend's father!

I expected this book to be a romance with a little bit of mystery, which I wasn't really looking forward to it because I am tired of recency romance books as I have read too many! But this series really surprised me, and I read both books within a week, as I knew I had to read book one to understand this book! This series was exciting, and I was hooked from the beginning! I literally couldn't put them down!

The first book was mostly about Lady Juliette's story, and a little about Daniel Swann, and this book brought more of Daniel's story to life! I love how Daniel learns that even though he doesn't know who is father is, he has a heavenly Father who has been providing for him, and watching out for him his whole life! This book was so unpredictable that I actually cried out when I read what happened as it blew me away! I loved it!! So yes I rate this 5 out of 5 because I was so entertained by this series, and this book! I highly recommend in, and am glad I didn't think it was just another boring regency romance, but it was an exciting regency mystery with some romance! I hope there is another book because I want to know what else happens! So great book, great characters, excellent storyline, and 5 out of 5 stars! I can't wait to read more of Erica Vetsch's books!!!!

‘Don’t blame God for the shortcomings of men.’

Erica Vetsch writes a great Regency and I do love a Regency. The first book in this series was very good and I was very much looking forward to the second. Here it is, and I was not disappointed. I loved it!

Vetsch has brought us great characters, a tough to crack mystery (I never guessed the culprit.), and a satisfying read all around. She also includes a deeply moving spiritual truth that ministered to me. Well done!

My thanks to Kregel Publications for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion in this review is expressly my own.

"Millstone of Doubt" is a Christian romance with a mystery set in 1816 in England. This is the 2nd book in the series, but you don't need to read the previous novels to understand this one. This book spoiled quite a lot about the previous book so you may wish to read them in order.

The story seemed mostly about Juliette falling in love, helped along by Daniel finding reasons to hold her closely and his giving her a deep, passionate kiss. While I liked them both, I don't understand why she's so attracted to him over the kind, supportive German noble. She mainly seemed drawn to Daniel because he knew her spy-in-training secret and he got physical with her (the thrill!). Juliette and Daniel spent some time together doing spy craft, and she helped gather information for his case, including the biggest clue.

There wasn't much of a mystery. Daniel's supposed to be a clever detective, but he overlooked several potential suspects. He spent a lot of time distracted so he delayed reading the collected evidence, including the Big Clue. Things weren't particularly difficult to figure out, from whodunit to who that pushy widow was to why Juliette's best friend's fiancé didn't like Daniel. Though that last might be simple only because I read too many novels. I suspected whodunit from the moment we met that person, who kept on acting suspicious until the Big Clue pointed Daniel in the right direction.

Historical details were woven into the story. Some aspects were highly researched, but there were also little things that weren't right for the time period, like Daniel being called a detective before the word was even invented. The Christian element was that Daniel felt abandoned by his father and therefore felt God must have abandoned him, too. A friend pointed out how God had taken care of him and why it's not reasonable to judge God by a human father's behavior. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable novel.

I was very much looking forward to reading this sequel to The Debutante's Daughter. While I enjoyed it because I really like the characters and the intrigue, I found some of the same issues as the first. Juliette is still quite bitter over her parents' roles that take them away from her. Daniel laments quite often about his position, or lack thereof, and how it affects his chances with Juliette.

There were kind of two main storylines in this book - the first being the mystery that is being solved (which was rather interesting) and the second being Daniel's 25th birthday and the end of his patronage. While I do enjoy guessing correctly, I felt like I guessed all the surprises, and that kind of bummed me out. I like still being surprised a little bit.

I did not enjoy this story as much as the first one, but it was still a fun read and I am going to stick with this series to see where it goes next!

I enjoyed Millstone of Doubt which is book two in a Regency era mystery series even more than the first. You will want to read Debutante’s Code first for the full set up and be introduced to Juliette and Daniel and their friends and family. Without spoiling either book know that Juliette is a debutante in her first “season” in London and Daniel is a Bow Street Detective and they each are involved in solving crime but obviously in very different roles. Erica does a great job at writing Juliette as a curious, independent, stereotype-breaking woman while staying true to the culture that she lives in. Millstone of Doubt has a satisfying ending both to the crimes involved and also to the relationship storyline while still leaving me awaiting book three to see what happens next. I don’t read a lot of books set in this era (or the classics written during this era actually) but appreciate books with a historical basis that help me learn more about another time and place. Erica includes a fantastic list of resources from her research that provide sources for further (non-fiction) reading. Thanks to Kregel and Netgalley for an early copy to read and review. This book is expected out in September 2022.

MIllstone of Doubt is the continuation of the Thorndike and Swann series. I definitely recommend you read the first book, The Debutante's Code before starting the second in the series. This book continues where the first one left off as Daniel and Juliette navigate their new roles as agents for the Crown. Beloved characters from the Serendipity and Secrets series continue to play a role in this series. I loved that since I am never really ready to say goodbye to my favorite characters. The story is full of mystery, murder, deception and intrigue with some romance and a beautiful faith-based message sprinkled in. It had some predictable moments and scenarios that were similar to other novels I have read recently, but I loved it anyway. I can hardly wait for the next book in this series to be published.
If you like a clean mystery novel then I highly recommend Millstone of Doubt

Thank you Kregel and Net Galley for the free DRC of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.
