This is an incredible book I must read for a little girls to women about women who have made a difference in the world. I love the way the book is set up with each individual part and region telling about those women from that region it has lots of interesting facts about these women
The Rebel Girls Handbook is another edition of extraordinary girls and women to be highlighted as role models for their excellent examples. These girls and women have made extraordinary strides with their achievements and should be recorded in a handbook such as this one.
This colorful, engaging book provides an introduction to 300-plus notable women throughout history, along with a few facts about each of them and what they've accomplished. I'd suggest gifting this book to a young girl along with a packet of Post-It page markers. Encourage the girl to enjoy the book, and to place a page marker next to the women she'd really like to learn more about.
The strength of The Rebel Girls Handbook is how it tackles "you can't know what you don't know" syndrome. Most young girls are aware of the poet Amanda Gorman, as she's young and contemporary, but have they learned about Bessie Coleman, the first African American and Native American woman to get a pilot's license, back in 1921? Do they know that Joan Jett, rock icon of the 80s, was turned away 23 times by record companies before deciding to start her own indie label?
Armed with a Post-It marked copy of the Handbook, a young rebel reader can scour the library and the internet to learn more about these women - or engage in meaningful conversations about them with older friends and family. This is why I call books of this type "jumping off" books. They provide the introduction - you take what interests you and run with it.
Three stars for content plus two stars for providing helpful inspiration equals five stars!
My thanks to Rebel Girls and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital advance review copy of this book. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.
The Rebel Girls Handbook is jam packed with many of the greatest women both throughout history and present day. It is informative and inspiring.
The interactive features of this book are amazing as well. Readers can be on the lookout for “Your turn” sections which prompt the reader to try a fun activity and QR codes are available throughout the book which will send the reader to a Rebel Girls app for even more greatness. The QR codes will lead to a story about the woman from the page the code was scanned, in audiobook format. Not everything in the Rebel Girls app is free, but the book provides enough content that the paid stories are optional bonuses.
I cannot wait to preorder copies for myself and many people in my life.
Absolute must haves for the book shelf of any little girl. Honoroured to have received an advance copy to share with my own rebel girl. Many thanks to netgalley and the publisher.
I haven't had a chance to look at the other Rebel Girl books but this one definitely sold me on them. I love the beginning with the maps and showing the vast amount of places people are from. I love when it breaks down who is who and small facts about them, just enough that you can go on and do your own research. It's a really fun way to get historical figures known and inspire girls everywhere.
We love everything Rebel Girls in this house so I am happy to see so many spin-offs from the original book. Great book to read with my daughter and one that will remain on our bookshelf forever.
I couldn't love this book more! Upon opening the book it is super colourful and eye catching. The illustrations stand out and make you want to read it. The different sections of the book, where rebel girls are from, the timeline, etc. are a great way for kids to learn about important people throughout history. I would highly recommend this book (as well as the other Rebel Girl books!). I will need to purchase a physical copy when it is released!
Thank you to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
It is always incredible get to know the names and stories About women Who conquered all kinds of adversties in life and still made their difference and influenced several contents and areas of the society. This series of book is pretty necessary to give the honor they deserved but the society seems to forget to give them the credit for the better changes. Well Done!
Rebel girls does it again!
I’m a huge fan of the entire Rebel Girls Collection. Such important literature for young women.
This book is amazing! I love the organization. It begins with country pages with women labeled from each place. Then a timeline of the women. Then hundreds of amazing women- one to each page. I love the graphics. Awesome how the women each have a “superpower” labeled. I also really love that the women are listed by their first initial which makes it easier for a young girl to find who she’s looking for. I learned so much reading about these amazing women. And I’m a sucker for organization so this may be my favorite publication yet. I plan to buy this!
Whats a beautiful book! All the wonderful women in the book delighted me. As a brazilian, I loved the choices made by the editors.
As usual the rebel girl series knocks another better out. This handbook is a great addition in the series, which never fails to let me down, for both returning readers and new readers to the books.
I found this handbook had a little more educational value with sections focusing -on women from around the globe that gave info not only on the iconic rebel girl but the country they were from, historical timelines showing how these great women impacted history and continue doing so and spotlights on 300 rebel girls from all manners of life- I found this extra information very educational even as adult with the historical timelines really highlighting the place and importance of women in shaping the world though the ages. This added a real wow factor for me and real added extra in bonus knowledge. Great for expanding minds young and old.
The handbook has QR codes that can be scanned to take the readers to the rebel girl web page for more information this interactive element am sure will be a big hit with tech savvy youngsters that will make the book come alive for them, I feel this is a clever add on to the book as most younger readers spend a lot of time online now , I would hope this mixture would encourage more reading of books as well as online reading.
In selection of the 300 women some have interactive activities called “your turn” to encourage the reader to think or act like the inspiring women they are going to read about for example writing a poem about a social issue that concerns you in the same way poet Amanda Gorman does. I found these “your turn” snippets really fresh, interesting and fun , they certainly would encourage discussion, inspire and break up the reading plus they are good fun.
They would work well in group setting such a after school club or as a individual task. I have two nieces age 14 and 10, I know doing these “your turn” sections together we would have lots of discussion not just round the rebel girl but about the arts, stem, the world we live and so much more it would encourage more research and learning in a fun way.
This ARC will be getting used during the holidays at least once with them before I buy a copy to add to their ever growing collection rebel girl and feminist books. So thank you very much for the ARC not only did I enjoy it you have given at least once easy free babysitting day this summer,
There is solid selection of inspiring 300 rebel girls from a great mix of background- stars of screen and stage, groundbreaking ladies in STEM, wonder women sporting stars, political heavyweights, activists and anything else you can think of- that are fully inclusive in terms of race, place in time and disability. There is the classic well known ones to ones I have never heard of until I read this book…. An utterly wonder mixture each one inspiring and cool. All great models.
Was over the moon to see Agatha Christie included as she is my all time favourite rebel girl.
I would have liked to have seen J.K Rowling and at least one famous name from the suffragette movement included but this is my only bug bear and I suppose that is a personal taste issue if anything.
As said it’s a solid 300 rebel girls that the spotlight is shined upon each spotlight section is full of facts, a mini bio and cool picture that can be easily cheery picked for favourites. Whatever the reader is into or wants to be there is a inspiring icon to suit that they can aim to be.
As is usual with the these books the artwork is stunning. It is bright, eye catching, cool, well depicted and interesting your eyes are instantly drawn into the book. I liked the scattering of real life images thought out the book also, made the book feel a little more grown up.
I’d say this book could be read along side a adult from ages 5 and as read on your own from around age 9/10. But I think all ages from 5-18 would connect to this book and interact well with it.
It might say rebel girls on the cover but this book is just as easily suited for boys, they are never too young to learn to respect women and learn of the value they bring to the table in all walks of life am sure many a boy would be just as inspired as girls with this book
. I think it’s book children would go back to at different ages for different reasons, and am sure the “your turn” sections could be done again and again with fresh sets of eyes as they grow,
I think this book would a great gift for anyone you wish to inspire be it young or old, girl or boy because who doesn’t need a little reminder of how amazing girls can be.
Footnote I will buying this book as a gift for the girls in my family young and old and adding my own little section on them as a rebel girl inside the cover, I think this book is perfectly placed for this kind of gift, I hope it tells them how much I’d admire them and they learn a little, are inspired a little and have a little fun
I incite this meeting to rebellion, rebel girls everywhere enjoy
This may be my favorite of the whole collection of Rebel Girls. It's fantastic. So many personalities make it quite emotional. Rebel Girls all around the world, from History and of all ages, from seven-year little girls who save the day to 76-year-old poets who get recognition. From leaders, inventors, and creators to champions this book brings the countries closer and us together.
Very inspirational. The design of the book is awesome, with three parts showing portraits connected to maps, and chronological lines. Also, it dedicates one page or doubles to each biography. Reading this book, I've learned a lot that I didn't know even about my favorite authors and activists.
I love that the publisher picks a different artist to make each portrait. The pages are very lively. Has interactive bits where we can create and put ourselves in their shoes.
**Thank you to Rebel Girls for the eARC of this title in exchange for this review. This in no way changed my rating**
I really like the Rebel Girls series as a whole. It's one I often recommend in my job as a librarian. I think they're really well executed, cover a variety of women in terms of both topics of interest and globalization. I like that this one is interactive for kids and kind of combines the ending of most of the Rebel books (the activities and reflection sections) throughout the book. There are a wide range of women in this book, including ones from the LGBT+ community and disabled women, which will make it easy for all children to see themselves or be inspired by the women portrayed.
I only have two small criticisms of this installment. The first is that some of the art looks like it was done by a child. In particular, Mariana Pajon, Maya Gabeira, and Alice Ball. I realize that they're reusing the art from previous editions for each woman discussed because I've read enough to them to recognize them, but I would've liked some of them to be updated to better reflect the quality of the artwork throughout the book.
My other issue is the choice to re-highlight Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (and to do so twice, no less) in the book. There wasn't really a need to highlight some people in the book once in the around the world section and then again in the larger portion. Just the second section would've been good, to be honest. You could've just noted the book would discuss them and put them on the map like what was done with most of the other subjects of this book. However, my issue for Adichie specifically is that, while I understand that both she and J.K. Rowling appear in previous additions, they have since been very outspoken against trans women. I don't think highlighting them as "rebel girls" is particularly empowering for young girls, especially if they are trans. I think there could have been space for another woman to be included, especially since it seems they've reused most of the women from previous editions, but chose not to include Rowling. I realize the book includes Andrea Jenkins, Dominique Jackson, and Marsha P. Johnson, all of whom are trans woman, but including a trans woman and putting them on equal footing with a TERF seems like a poor choice to me, especially when one of her listed "superpowers" is "honesty". They also highlighted that she had a TED Talk called "We Should All Be Feminists", but her idea of "feminism" isn't inclusive. I also want to acknowledge that I realize there are other problematic women in this book (for example, Agatha Christie, who was antisemitic). However, I think that since she is dead and not currently continuing to cause harm, there could be a discussion around both her accomplishments and the problems with her whereas Adichie and Rowling continue to loudly be discriminatory and therefore, shouldn't be lauded.
These concerns aren't enough to cause me to not recommend the book, but I do think it's a criticism Rebel Girls might want to keep in mind moving forward for the series. That said, this edition was just as high quality as the others.
I reviewed another Rebel Girls (Good Night Stories) book a couple of months ago, so I wanted to check this one out as well. I've got a few cousins who I think are the target audience of a handbook like this. Christmas is coming up and I think these are bright and fun enough to be considered gifts, as well as a purposeful and empowering educational moments.
The spotlights at the beginning are short paragraphs, opposed to the full page spreads in the other edition. It showcases where the Rebel Girls are from in the different parts of the world. When I was a kid, I received a talking globe from my grandfather and I loved it! (You could use the attached pen and click on a country and get facts and stats.) I think these type of gifts could be paired together.
There are also full page spotlights and a timeline of historical women throughout time. I do think it is different enough from the Good Night Stories edition, so they'd be good to pair together. There are also fun prompts that I could definitely see being used at a sleepover or a Girl Scout meeting. And the fact that there is a Rebel Girls app is just super cool.
This series gets better and better. This book is a must have for every bookshelf - male or female. I need my own copy, not just one for the house. This is packed full of amazing women and girls and charts their gifts to our world. The women and by continent, country and timeline and there is someone to inspire everyone. It helps to have the facts so clearly set out, in a great tone and who doesn’t want to know who has a rescue cat or 2!
This book is adorable and will be such a cute resource for young girls. The women profiled in the book are from all different backgrounds and times in history. Not sure why Margaret Atwood is included but sure go for it. This will surely empower young girls everywhere. It will be a great birthday gift!
We are big fans of the Rebel Girl books in our household and I love how this one is set up. It’s cool to see the Rebel Girls in a different way (location, time period, etc). As always, the illustrations and even the way the information is put on the page is fun and engaging. It’s nicely broken up into bits of information that makes it easy to read and understand.
Thank you Rebel Girls and NetGalley for a fantastic new book!
Yet another great book in the Rebel Girls series. A+ points for including Artemisia Gentileschi and not mentioning her (r-word) for once, and focussing on her artistic qualities! Even more points for including Joan Jett, 15yr old me would be screaming!
This is a lovely book for every young girl, that focuses on a broad range of women, with little facts about them (instead of the full story in detail, like in the other books).
The Rebel Girls Handbook , another really go one!
Rebel Girls around the world.
Great Women doing great thing.
