A fast-paced crime thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. Well-drawn characters who all have interesting back stories, so lots to keep me entertained. A proper page turner.
This was excellent and kept me up half the night as I couldn’t stop reading it. You never knew what was going to happen next and there was no way of predicting anything as it was always full of twists and turns. Brilliant writing, fast-paced and two strong good characters, there is nothing not to like about this book. No wonder Simon is a top-selling author, I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
The second instalment of The Anglesey Crime Thriller series In Too Deep is another fantastic read from McCleave.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Dark Tide, the first in the series but thought In Too Deep really ramped it up a notch and was even more twisty and gripping.
Told over dual timelines and locations which made for a really fast paced storyline I couldn't put this down once I had started.
The secondary plot of Laura's seeking out the truth about her husband's death develops further from book one and wow does it leave you on a cliffhanger!
Loved seeing Laura's relationship with Gareth gather pace and it adds another element to the book rather than it just being about the crimes.
Cannot wait for number 3 in the series!
🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 from me.
Another great read!
I loved the first book and was so pleased to read the second in the Anglesey Series.
The characters are engaging and the story is interesting. Probably best read in sequence due to the nature of the relationships between characters.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for gifting me this arc in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
A great read.
Beautiful picturesque descriptions of parts of Anglesey.
Also captures the ongoing problems with Northern Ireland in the 1990s
Characters well depicted.
A widowed police officer,an undercover soldier, murders and retribution.
An intense read from start to finish.!
This is the first book I have read by Simon McCleave.
I enjoyed this book even though I hadn't read any of the series it was easy to follow as a standalone.
A page turner that was fast paced.
I will definately read others.
In Too Deep by Simon McCleave
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Avon and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Two months since ex-Police Negotiator Laura Hart was forced back into action after the kidnap of her son, she has re-joined the force as a DI. When a skeleton is found in a crumbling castle ruin near the seaside town of Beaumaris, Anglesey, she can’t wait to prove herself by solving the case.
The victim is identified as Jamie McCann. The only thing anyone seems to know about him is that he disappeared without a trace twenty years ago.
When Laura’s investigation leads her to MI5 and the Real IRA, she knows she’s on the trail of something truly explosive. But some people will do anything to stop their secrets coming out. With the threat drawing in and her family yet again in danger, is she in too deep?
My Opinion
I have not read the first book in the series but for me, this worked well as a standalone. This book is an interesting thriller and I read the majority of the book in one sitting. There suspense from the opening pages. The plot is told through two timelines but each is clearly labelled so as to not confuse the reader.
As this was my first book by Simon McCleave, this was a great introduction.
Rating 4/5
What a great series this is turning out to be! In so many ways different from his other work. I am getting invested in this team, and I can't wait to see where their lives take them. And DI Laura Hart, she is moving on with her life, or trying to, after the death of her husband. But sometimes life happens, and you hit a dead stop! So how is she going to handle that in her near future. And the twists and turns are ones like only Mr McCleave can write, and the suspense he has left us with has me hoping the next book is out soon. I definitely recommend this book!
I had thoroughly enjoyed the first book in The Anglesey Series, so was really looking forward to this one; I'm pleased to say that it didn't disappoint.
In Too Deep follows Laura Hart as she joins the local police force in Anglesey as a DI. A skeleton is discovered on her first day and she throws herself into the investigation, which quickly escalates as more bodies are found. Before she knows it, Laura has found links to both MI5 and The Real IRA and her family are in danger.
Firstly, I just love the setting of this series. Anglesey offers everything you could wish for from this kind of book - breathtakingly beautiful scenery and historical buildings, but on the flip side the rugged coastline and remote locations can seem deadly.
I really feel a connection with Laura and enjoy learning more about her. I love how we continue to learn about her past and how her curiosity about her husband's death is interweaved into this book. There is an element of romance as Laura's relationship with Gareth develops, this was another plot line that I found myself completely immersed into.
The story itself was well written and gripped me from the start. I didn't know much about the IRA, so enjoyed reading about it, although some parts were hard to read. I genuinely can't wait for the next book in the series.
My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.
What a wild ride!
I am new to this series and will immediately go back to read the book that I missed!
Laura Hart is returning to the force after an absence spent coming to terms with the death of her husband in a botched police operation, and caring for her kids during the fallout.
To complicate matters, Laura is in a new relationship with her supervisor, who may or may not be carrying a torch for his ex wife.
On her first day in the new job, Laura is called out regarding a body found. Subsequent investigation leads the team to discover that they may have found a British soldier who was undercover in the IRA.
The book uses flashbacks to introduce us to several characters, mainly one who was asked to go undercover in the IRA, but after being pulled from deep cover walks away one day never to be seen again!
What happened to him? Did someone from his old life track him down, or did someone from his new life do him in?
In the present day the investigation raises as many questions as it answers, such as who knew what and when? More bodies start to pile up, begging the question of their connection to the lost soldier.
In the background Laura is trying to move forward but still hanging on to the past. She is still trying to unravel what happened to her husband, and has a lead on his former partner.
As Laura grows closer to the truth, she faces an outside threat to her family. Who wants to discourage her from asking the right questions, and can she trust her instincts, or has she lost valuable skills? Also, can she trust her feelings in this new relationship, especially when the ex wife makes a surprise return?
With all the twists and turns it leads to a finish you may not have seen coming.
The book also shows Laura indulging in self care by early morning swimming, and I must admit I found those scenes terrifying!
I was kindly given an advanced copy of this title by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second in the Anglesey series but can easily be read ad a stand alone.
DI Laura Hart is back on the force after three years. She lost her husband Sam in a gangland bomb attack in Manchester and has taken her and her two children time to recover.
But her first day back on the job in her hometown of Anglesey is anything but straightforward.
When a body is discovered in some ancient ruins is it a old body or something more fresh?
The story takes you from 1998 Belfast to the British Army in the middle east and to Laura's hometown.
But what connects them altogether and who is responsible for murder?
A compelling and wonderful read.
A intriguing thriller which kept me engaged throughout the story. There are plenty of intense and suspenseful moments.
Lots of information about the British Army and the IRA that was interesting to read about.
This is my first book written by Simon McCleave and I did enjoy the writing style. I will go back and read the first book in the series as I think it will help me know more of the backstory of Laura Hart.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
A compelling and well-written mystery set on Anglesey, North Wales. I had previously read the first book featuring DI Laura Hart but this would also grip a reader who was brand new to the series. The storyline, involving the discovery of a dead body on a religious site and the mysterious disappearance of an under-cover military officer tasked with infiltrating the real IRA at the time of the Good Friday agreement is well structured, featuring flash backs from the soldier’s lived experience and emerging clues from the investigation. The characters are well thought out and are believable. The twist itself I found a bit harder to believe due to how connected small communities are - both in Wales and Northern Ireland - but that aside, the book was a highly enjoyable read.
With thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review the book in advance of publication.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and this second one is even better. A really fast moving thriller that keeps you hooked all the way through. Brilliant read. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me access to an early copy of this book.
Laura Hart, after two months and the kidnapping of her son, has re-joined the force as a DI. Jamie McCann has disappeared without a trace twenty years ago but a skeleton has been found near a seaside town of Beaumaris, Anglesey. Laura’s investigation leads her to MI5 and the Real IRA but nobody seems to want their secrets to come out. This turned out to be a really interesting book after a bit of a slow start. The twists and turns about midway forced me to read without putting the book down until the cliffhanger of a finish. I am now looking forward to Blood On The Shore, the 3rd book in The Anglesey Series. If you like a thrilling mystery, then you would love this book. Simon McCleave is a writer that knows how to deliver an exciting adventure with every read. Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books for a copy for an honest review.
Having read both the books in this series I have thoroughly enjoyed both of them. I like the way the author weaves more than one story together.and it (mostly) comes together at the end. There are some loose threads hanging which are there to draw you into the next book in the series, which is very naughty of Simon McCleave.
The characters in this book are relatable and believable, the plot is likewise realistic. The author takes care to explain police acronyms at their first usage, this is useful for those not familiar with them. The sense of place is another strong element of this and the previous book.
A worthwhile read, good story and much to please the crime reader.
This is the second book in an easy read and entertaining Police based thriller series. This story expertly links recent political history into a story of deception and murderer. There is also the continued story thread from the first book around why a Policeman, the husband of one of the main characters, was killed in previous Police operation. Thank you to Avon books and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
The second in the Laura Hart series though this also works well as a stand alone novel with reference to her back story. Hart is in a new post as DI in Anglesey and on her first day she is called in to investigate human remains. From this point onwards the story is cleverly plotted, bouncing between current investigations and the historical story of a British soldier working undercover to infiltrate the IRA.
There are plenty of twists and turns, suspects, unexpected developments, car chases and love interest to keep you turning the pages. It’s good to know that there is a third novel to look forward to.
Thanks to the publishers for the ARC.
The second in the series and definitely a page turner.
Set on Anglesey North Wales where lots of holidays and lived in North Wales for many years so enjoyed all the descriptions of the area.
DI Laura Hart returns to work after a short time off when her son was kidnapped, A body is found believed to be an ex soldier who went missing 20yr ago.
It`s split between the present in North Wales and past in northern Ireland, I didn`t think I would like the bits in northern Ireland but it is easy to read and keeps you guessing till the end.
Can`t wait to read the rest of the series.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC

This is #2 in the DI Laura Hart/Anglesey series but can easily be read as a standalone.
Laura, an ex-police negotiator, is returning to work as a DI in Beaumaris, Anglesey. On her first day back, a body is found near the ruins of a castle. The remains should be easily identified as there is a credit card and a pin badge found with them, but the trail takes Laura to MI5 and the Real IRA.
A brilliant police procedural with lots of twists and turns.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
