I adore the Psalms and I revere Walter Brueggeman, and this entry in the new Brueggemann Library collection brings them together masterfully. The author is without peer in his knowledge of the Old Testament, and here he shares that knowledge of the Hebrew songbook splendidly.
. This book while building a foundation that begins in the Psalms, causes us to look back in order to look forward. There is wisdom in digging deep into historical context, and words written by people as flawed and sometimes desperate as we are today.
Unlike many Christian books this one offers reflective questions at the end of each chapter, giving time for personal response and application.
I found this book to be thought provoking with some great quotes that jump off the pages.
Although I don’t usually agree with everything I read, this is a good place to spend some time.
It may please you, challenge you, or anger you, but it will definitely leave an impression.
I received a copy from Westminster John Knox Press and this is my opinion of the book.
