Twin sisters, Tabby and Sage, own their family’s book and candle shop in Georgia. Their lives are upended when an angry customer is found dead and Gerard, their shop clerk, is arrested.
Tabby decides to take matters into her own hands and start investigating when the cops don’t seem interested in looking any deeper into the murder. Of course, she digs up secrets and scandals.
This has all of the hallmarks of a cozy mystery:
Amateur sleuth
Small town feel
Limited suspect pool
Light romance
Plus:
Bookstore setting
Savannah
Adorable cat sidekick
Aromatherapy
Magic
I enjoyed Tabby and the descriptions of her candle-making. The Book and Candle Shop sounds dreamy. The mystery had several layers to it with enough reveals to keep me intrigued and guessing.
While the story is set in Savannah, limiting it to a historic business district gives it a small town feel where Tabby can question other business owners and the local officials.
There’s a secondary storyline with Tabby’s magic - because of a tragic incident in her past, she refuses to use her powers to their full potential. At times, I found myself wanting more magic and less murder because the magic is unique and intriguing.
Perfect read if you’re looking for a southern spiced cozy with a scent of magic.
Snuffed Out by Valona Jones was a fantastic mystery. I liked the characters and the plot was great! My first book by this author and can't wait to read more.
Twin sisters, a Magic Candle shop, a cat and a whodunit make this story a cute fun read. When they discover a dead person in the shop they set out to solve the mystery. Just a fun cute read that doesn't require alot of guessing. Just right for a light read on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Thanks #netgalley and #Crookedlanebooks for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, from Crooked Lane Books and #NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to preview and review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Quirky, fun and what you come to expect from a cozy mystery,
I picked this one up because of the cover and twins (I'm also a twin)! But sadly it just wasn't for me. I didn't really care for any of the characters, and the writing from Tabby's point of view was a little hard to get into.
A quick, cute cozy about twins, a book and candle shop, and murder. Will be interesting to see how the series develops over time.
I'm a fan of paranormal and was eager to read this. While I liked the setting I felt that it was a plot we've seen many times before. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance read.
The premise of this book was very enticing. Add in a black cat on the cover and I’m sold! Unfortunately, I just could not get into this book. I might try it again at a later date. Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tabby and Sage are twin sisters who run a book and candle shop…and they also have this supernatural ability of controlling energy and communicating to each other with this energy.
A woman named Blithe comes into the shop one day complaining she was ripped off (though she uses another term that is an alternate of a slur for Romani people). The sisters refund her and give her a complimentary lotion for her troubles, but then Blithe is mysteriously murdered shortly after this interaction. The story then is much about trying to find who murdered Blithe, the two sisters being some of the top suspects.
The sisters knowing their innocence start an independent investigation of their own and the story follows them tracking down and talking to different townsfolk. This part of the story was overall pretty fun but some of the transitions were a bit choppy.
This book also had one of my least favorite things I keep seeing in books: a bisexual character who cheats on their monogamous opposite sex partner with the same sex to explore their sexuality. I’m so tired of seeing this, as it once again plays into the stereotype that bisexuals are promiscuous or more likely to cheat on you. It’s just not true, STOP DOING THIS.
I love the cover! It’s witchy and enticing and really draws in the reader who would enjoy this sort of supernatural mystery.
I think with a good edit and a sensitivity read or two this could be a quite interesting cozy mystery series. As of right now I’m giving this 2.5 stars.

Hello, Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley.
The file that came into my Kindle has all of the paragraphs without indentions. Thus, the reading process of this arc is not easy on the eyes or enjoyable.
Unfortunately, I found this poor formatting with several of the cozy mystery tiles from Crooked Lane books.
The only two that were formatted correctly and readable were A Christmas Candy Killing and A Good Day To Pie, both of which I loved. I will post reviews for those books later this Fall on my blog and include the links.
List of Crooked Lane Books that are incorrectly formatted are;
Death by Margins
Dead Men Don’t Decorate
The Game Is A Footnote
Calypso, Corpses, and Cooking
Streetcar Named Murder
Snuffed Out
Hidden in the Pines
Canter With A Killer
This book takes place at a book and candle shop. The owner is Tabby Winslow. She also lives in the apartment above the shop. She owns the whole shop. Her and her family work really hard to find a killer someone they know gets Killed. If you like a good crime show then you will love this book it keeps youj guessing until the end who did it and why.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for me to read this.
Cute cozy about twin sisters who run a Magic Candle Shop. Fun, appealing characters, an light, easy prose.
Snuffed Out had a cute storyline, but I had a hard time getting into it. It seemed like new information about characters was introduced awkwardly and did not advance the story smoothly. This review was based on an ARC copy provided to me for my honest opinion.
3.5 ⭐️ Snuffed Out is the first book in the Magic Candle Shop Mystery Series. Twin business owners Tabby and Sage discover a dead body in their shop. When their friend is suspected of the murder they search for clues but have a hard time getting cooperation. Time is running out and danger is getting closer. This was a fun quick cozy read and I will read more in the series. Thank you #NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review
I enjoyed this book. It’s a fast read. It’s an unusual story. The characters are great. #SnuffedOut #NetGalley
