A fun time overall but was definitely a YA book. It had some cringy parts specifically to do with the romance, which felt a bit forced at times, but they were pretty easy to overlook. The characters were real and relatable, I especially like the mother-daughter relationship the best. I also really enjoyed the outdoorsy setting and the connections the main characters both have with nature. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for providing me with an e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
Wild is the Witch is such a good YA adult witchy fantasy. The magic system is really neat. Using magic that is all around is just cool. Iris had so much growth in the book. She had gone through something awful and because of that tried to hide herself. Pike makes her want to stop hiding. I adore Pike. He is so funny and sarcastic. The banter between them was just awesome. I really enjoyed the narration for this book. Thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for the audio arc in exchange for my honest review.
Rachel Griffin has done it again! Last year, I read and fell in love with The Nature of Witches. Wild is the Witch was no different. I loved it! Like Nature, this one was pretty different from the other witchy books I've read, and I really enjoyed the change. The author does an amazing job of writing characters that I don't want to let go of. I enjoyed getting to know Iris and Pike, and I loved the whole wildlife refuge aspect and getting to know some of the animals. The story was really well written, and I could not put it down. I'm so sad that it's a standalone. I'd love to have more Iris and Pike and to continue getting lost in the pnw at The Foggy Mountain Wildlife Refuge. I will say though, for a standalone, I am happy with the way it wrapped up. I can't wait to read more from this author.
I definitely recommend checking out this witchy read sometime if you haven't already!
I enjoyed Wild is the Witch by Rachel Griffin! I had listened to the audiobook version and I felt that the narrator was a good fit for the scenery of the story and was easy to listen to.
I really enjoyed how nature was incorporated into the magic system, as it made it feel more realistic. As I was listening, I felt like I couldn't do anything else but listen as I was sucked right into the magical world.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and YA.
Thank you Recorded Books and Netgalley for providing me with an audiobook arc in exchange for an honest review.
The narration was an absolutely not from me. I ended up switching to the print version because I really liked the story but the narrator was a hard pass.
A positive book that shows a young woman’s path to trust and individual growth as she fights to protect the boy she’s accidentally cursed. I enjoyed reading the book and the ending felt warm and tidy.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, but I truly loved the narrator. She put feeling to the words that really helped me connect with the characters.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book on audio. I went into this really hoping that in spite of not enjoying The Nature of Witches all that much, that the second book from this author would outshine and improve upon the debut and really draw me in. However, I just think that maybe just this author in the young adult genre isn't for me personally.
I think that had this story focused a bit more on the witches and the magic then perhaps I would have liked it a fair bit more and rated it higher. Instead this is a romance. And again, I really do like romance books, but for them to work I have to feel invested in the characters, and when coupled with my expectations of the book and my general apathy for the characters, this just didn't work for me.
I think the characters were the biggest downfall. The female main character is just so damn annoying. There is not one single redeemable thing about her and I genuinely considered DNF'ing this book because I couldn't bear the thought of continuing on with her whining. It was awful. Truly.
This may work for a more young adult audience, or anyone else who likes tropes typically found in ya books, but I don't think that I was the intended reader and should probably have set this down when I realized that I wasn't going to enjoy this book.
Thank you netgalley for an arc. Wild is The Witch is about Iris Gray, a witch, that unintentionally enacts a curse. This was a fairly fast-paced book with magic. This was a very unique book with enemies to lovers trope. I almost wish this wasn't a standalone. I will be picking up more books from the author.
This book was okay. I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it either. It’s very much a vibes book and atmospheric. If you like books like The Night Circus that heavily rely on the environment to tell the story then you’ll like this book.
I don't think fantasy audiobooks are for me. I found it really hard to follow along with the plot and the characters, and I wasn't able to get invested in the romance, which is usually very easy for me. Overall I think this just wasn't for me, though I might still read other books by the author, though not through audio.
rachel griffin's writing is just soooo good. i loved this read but it wasn't very memorable.
- thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the free e-ARC.
While maybe not revolutionary plot-wise this book just feels like a comforting, warm hug. The magic system is so cool and different and the characters just feel so real. It's a compelling tale of coming of age and growing up and mental health and balancing who you're supposed to be with who you are. Griffin has a knack for this age.
It was a great fast paced story but I was hoping for more magical moments and somehow I felt that the story was quite predictable.
Iris enacts a curse on Pike due to him hating witches. The curse was only supposed to be written to get it out of her system and bound to an inanimate objet, but it ends up being bound to an owl and its life. If the owl dies, then the curse will be unleashed on Pike.
I was so obsessed with Rachel Griffin's Nature of Witches last year, which I read for the Trick or Treatathon last year. When this came out, I just had to buy it and read it. I do have to say I prefer the Nature of witches more, but this still was okay. This was definitely character driven, but had a slow pace. A good chunk takes place with Iris and Pike trying to find and save the owl, but Pike does not know about the curse and Iris does not want the council to find out either.

This was such a cute and "feel good" book! I'm sure many YA readers will enjoy it very much!
If you are looking for something lighthearted and like witchy, enemy-to-lovers YA romance about magic, nature and family ties you will probably enjoy it very much.
I was left wanting more from the characters and some of the plot devices didn't make much sense but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. There is something about the author's writing style that makes the story feel just wholesome and "feel good" so I really had a good time and was left in a good mood!
Thank you Netgalley and RB Media for the audiobook of “Wild Is The Witch” by Rachel Griffin in exchange for an honest review.
Laura Knight Keating did a wonderful job narrating this book. She will now forever be the voice of Iris to me. I felt every emotion Iris felt though her narration and I find myself wanting to go back and listen again and again.
This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2022 and it did not disappoint.
Iris is a witch who keeps finding herself in trouble. With a recent move to the pacific north west Iris is carful not to upset the Witch’s council any more than se already has, worried that if she causes trouble again that her powers may be stripped of her.
To vent her frustrations she writes curses then dispels them before they can be enacted. But before she can dispel the curse she wrote for Pike Alder, the witch hating aspiring Ornithologist, a bird swoops in and steals it. If the bird should die, the curse will not only is enacted onto Pike but to everyone within that region, turning them all into witches; A very dangerous thing considering that new witches don’t know how to control their powers.
Pike and Iris now must hike through the Pacific North West in search for this bird before any harm comes to it or else mass discretion shall ensue.
This book was everything I wanted it to be. I love the idea of witches being monitored by a higher authority and what that looks like in their daily lives.
While reading I felt like I was walking alongside Iris and felt what she felt. Rachel Griffin did a wonderful job in her description of Washington and the PNW (A place I hold dear in my heart) I felt like I was home amounts the wild trees and the creatures they inhabit.
I was hoping for more witchiness, but I loved the set up of this and I think that Rachel Griffin has a real talent at writing fast paced books. I also loved the audiobook narration! I wish I connected to the characters more, but they felt younger than they were and I struggled to understand them.
A great, fast paced story that had a magical story! There could have been more witchery, but there was some! I wish there was more to the book or another book to go with this one. Thank you for my ALC!
This was a wild and unbelievably wonderful story about a young witch who can communicate with animals - definitely one thing I really wish I could do in my own life. This story is atmospheric and highly emotional - it's a story of dealing with your emotions and finding yourself in the process. I loved the enemies to lovers story between Iris and Pike, I am a sucker for an enemies to lovers trope. I also loved their adventure in nature to find the enchanted owl and stop the curse from happening. A truly beautiful, romantic and utterly magical story told by an unbelievably charismatic narrator.
