This was a good YA story. I thought it would be like BlackOut where each author had their own story. Unless you are familiar with the flow of the different authors pen, you don't know who wrote what. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but if you've read BlackOut and expected the same type of anthology its not it
Whiteout takes place during the Atlanta whiteout, it's essentially a love story. I loved all the characters and how there were multiple stories that all connected. The ending was a happy one and I loved it.
While this collection wasn't quite as enjoyable as Blackout, I definitely found myself diving right back into a short story collection where the characters overlapped in some capacity, I just had to figure out how and wait patiently. It seems unusual for there to be a snowstorm in Atlanta, but after experincing other strange weather phenomena in the last few years, I wouldn't put anything past Mother Nature.
This is fun for fans of the authors and young adult contemporary romance fans. A delight, for sure.
Grand romantic gestures sums of the plot of this book. Over and over, characters honoring and discovering love in the novel, “Whiteout” by Dhonielle Clayton et al.
Atlanta is shutdown because of a snowpocalypse. Traffic is at stopped on the highways, the city has issued a shelter-in -place directive, and Stevie is planning how to show 1.. an apology and 2. Greatest romantic gesture to Sola. Meanwhile, Stevie has recruited her dearest friends and friends’ friends and family to help. The multiple authors weaved together the stories of all of these characters.
I enjoyed “Blackout” by Clayton et al more than “Whiteout”. I felt more connected to the characters and was able to keep track of the characters. I did not feel invested in some of the characters in the novel, perhaps because there so many, but I do admire the efforts of the authors, for it is not very often that so many fantastic, young adult authors collaborate on one project. I also appreciate that the characters are facing realistic identity & sexuality struggles.
I definitely would recommend high school students to read this novel.
Thank you to the authors, Quill Tree Books, and NetGalley for the ARC
"Whiteout" is another delightful collaboration by a fantastic team of authors, building on the success of their previous work in ""Blackout."" The snowy backdrop of Atlanta sets the stage for a heartwarming tale of young love, friendship, and the magic that can happen when unexpected events bring people together.
The narrative, woven with interconnecting stories, promises a cozy and sparkling romance against the backdrop of a snow-covered Atlanta. The focus on Black joy and the uniqueness of each teen relationship adds layers of authenticity to the storytelling, making it a refreshing addition to the young adult romance genre.
With the combined talents of Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon, ""Whiteout"" is sure to deliver a captivating and heartwarming reading experience. If you enjoyed the magic and charm of ""Blackout,"" this novel promises to be another enchanting journey into the world of Black teen love, where every relationship is as unique and sparkling as Southern snowflakes."
I love how the story of Stevie and Zola serve as a frame narrative for the other cascading stories of the other ten teens. In Whiteout, these twelve teens are all united not only by mutual connections, friends and family, but also all grappling with their own love stories. With heartbreak and silences, with tender new beginnings and olds flames re-ignited. Jumping between all these pieces which have to come together to help give Stevie a chance to win Zola back, White Out is captivating.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me access to the free advanced digital copy of this book.
Very cute interconnected collection of stories. I thought this one flowed a bit better than Blackout. I also thought having it be a snowstorm in ATL made so much sense and was a nice change of scenery. The characters and stories were diverse and heartwarming. Only complaint is a few stories I were so good I wanted more from them and less from others.
We used this book in my young adult literature course last semester. It's a wonderful book that offered a lot of great opportunities for conversation! At least one of the students is now using it with her high school group!
I love how all these voices and stories blended so perfectly together. Having all of these insanely talented authors join forces to create a wonderful, cozy, sweet, emotional story is absolutely a gift.
I loved Blackout, so I was excited to read this book. I thought this was a cute read! It’s the perfect escape on a chilly afternoon.
This was a quick read.I love how each of them connect in a way, in the end it all comes together. This was a great emotional read with a spotlight on relationships and friendships. I did not read blackout but after reading this, I will have to check it out.

The sort-of sequel to Blackout! And just like that one, these stories wove together with one through-line connecting them all. This helps the anthology shine.
What I loved about this is that the authors of the stories aren’t stated. Instead, it feels like this was really more of a collaborative effort. I’m sure each author was responsible for one story, but it really didn’t feel discordant. The stories complement each other and by the end, this really does feel like a novel and not an anthology.
I was so pleasantly surprised by this. Could there be a third one in the future? Boy, I hope so.
4 stars
eeek 🙈 i am honestly super sad this one missed the mark for me. I didn’t connect to any of these characters at all.
I felt the book was chaotic but also unbelievably repetitive at the same time. I felt myself constantly checking what percentage I was at and it DRAGGED.
You’re going to get a lot of romance tropes, but also going to get we kissed, we dated, we split, and we got back together in every single couple. It was so boring and repetitive that i kept wanting to DNF but didn’t because i was holding out hope for something to switch up and he connective.
All the characters were not likable and caused it to be near impossible to relate too.
I really wanted to like this one, but it did not work for me.
After reading Blackout, I was super excited for this one. Just like in Blackout, this book follows different couples through a major event; however, this one is a snow storm in Atlanta.
I really loved the variety and inclusiveness of the interwoven narratives.
This was a fun seasonal read! The relationships were rooted in friendship. There was also racial and sexual diversity.
Ugh this was a flop for me. I loved black out well let me catch myself. I LIKED blackout but I can’t say the same for this one. I think the stories just don’t give enough to feel anything. Still love all the authors included. Just alone.
After reading and really liking Blackout, I was really excited to get Whiteout. I just knew it was going to be like the other one with a swoony story that somehow came together. And although the structure was the same, it just wasn’t the same for me.
Ok so the number one thing I liked about all these stories was the way they were all interconnected. This time all the characters are trying to help someone with an apology to their significant other. But this time they all knew about each other and they were all helping each other out. I have to say, I would have preferred it to the way they did it in Blackout when they were all just living their own lives but just so happened to see the other characters in their story. Another thing I thought was cute was the fact that they don’t want to tell people who wrote which story. I will spend the rest of my days trying to guess who did what lol
My favorite stroies were the one with the mall and the two friends and the one with the snowball fight. I also liked the one at the airport, but the love triangle threw me off. But these stories worked good for the overall story and even had a cute one of their own in their story. They were all about very different characters too and I loved that. There were cishet couples, there were LGBTQ couples, and all. I loved them all. I also liked the setting. I don’t know why I didn’t put two and two together and realize it was a holiday story, but it was! And I love that it was a place in the South with snow. As a fellow southerner, I knew exactly what they meant when it was said that we shut down everything for more than an inch. Because that is 10000% true.
I didn’t care for the overall story in this one tho. Because in the beginning she was in trouble for the thing that happened with her girlfriend. But then she escape s and tries for this huge thing to happen. But what happens at the end? Did she get caught? Was she in trouble? I need to know. It just felt like no closure. Which was weird because it was about different stories written by different authors.
This one was a lot different than the other as far as climate, but I still enjoyed it. I did like Blackout more, but that might be because I’m not a fan of snow lol I hope they do one for all the seasons, like fall or spring. Don’t ask me what they’d be about tho lol
Whiteout is the companion story to Blackout but only because it was written by the same authors and because some of the characters from both stories are related. Besides that, they don’t interact much and therefore you can read one without reading the other.
Whiteout is set during a blizzard in Atlanta right before Xmas and we follow several couples through it all. One of them is like the thread throughout the book. I honestly don’t want to say too much because I went in blind and I liked it that way.
I quite enjoyed this book. I didn’t love it as much as Blackout but it was pretty fun still. I liked following the different stories and how they all interacted. However, some of the characters were a bit annoying and I was kind of frustrated at times. But overall, this was great and I just love the concept so so much. I hope they do another one to be honest.
