What fun! M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin is back, solving mysteries, trying to keep her love life in order, and relying on her friends to make it all work. The Cotswolds shine in this episode, as do the quirky characters to (may or may not) live there. Already looking forward to the next one!
M.C. Beaton created a memorable, quirky character in Agatha Raisin and I have been a rabid fan of the series for years. As the author established and matured her character Agatha became more comfortable in her Cotswold village and lost some of the edge that made her unique and fun.
While DEVIL’s DELIGHT has some interesting moments ( Agatha in a “ naturalist”/nudist colony!) I desperately long for the snarkier Agatha who chases men more often than she attracts them. She still makes for a smart protagonist, but this latest addition to the series, presents us with an Agatha more in keeping with the attractive, “ neutralized” character of the tv series. . . Not the nuanced. Vulnerable character of the earlier books.
Yes, she is a clever, more experienced detective, but I miss the grumpier, more nuanced Agatha. She has been neutralized to a point that she is a less interesting character.
Netgalley provided me a complimentary copy of this book in return for a candid review.
Off on a road trip to a friend’s wedding, Agatha and Toni see a naked man run out into the road. That’s certainly enough o make me stop…as do the ladies. The man tells them that he has found a body, so the ladies follow him into the woods, but nothing is there.
After calling the police and them not a shred of evidence that a body was on a rumored sacrificial altar, the ladies stay on and meet the members of a club that is meeting there. They soon have reason to believe something is off and begin to look into the group and the missing body. But will they be able to solve the mystery or are they next to disappear?
A FABULOUS series and I am so glad that St. Martin’s Press and R.W. Green have kept this series going! You’ll both love and be annoyed with Agatha at times, but you can’t help but having the love outweighs the annoyance and keep coming back for more. Be prepared to laugh out loud at times and to even find yourself taking to the characters. It will wrap you up into the shenanigans, it’s that good!
This book was sent to me by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher for the electronic copy. The protagonist is so quirky...all of her men...her choices...this book made me chuckle...the way she solves mysteries...her friendships...her romances...and the aspect of the people she surrounds herself with...unbelievable...there are so many characters that, at times, it is somewhat confusing...I eventually sorted them out...mostly...this is a fun book. I look forward to more of the same...
Devil's Delight: An Agatha Raisin Mystery by M.C. Beaton; R.W. Green is the newest installment in the wonderful series. I just loved it!
This is number 33 in the successful, long-standing mystery series set in the picturesque Cotswolds. I have read almost every book, and have been with Agatha through thick and thin. Her character progression has been quite wonderful to see. I definitely see a thread of kindness, compassion, and care for her close friends that was not evident early on. She is still sassy, stubborn, and challenging…but I think deep down she has changed.
I really enjoyed this murder/mystery involving a naturist society. I enjoyed the incorporation of Toni and Charles often into the plot. ( I just truly love Charles.)
I can’t wait for the next book and hope this series continues on.
5/5 stars
Thank you NG and Minotaur Books / St. Martin’s Press for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 12/13/22.
As always, Agatha Raisin is irritating and delightful simultaneously. I wasn’t sure this series would continue after the passing of M C Beaton but so glad that it has and has done so seamlessly.
