Cute, a twist on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but instead of spies, you have the PNR romance to make you laugh and swoon. A cute romance for sure!
This is my first time reading something by this author, so I didn't have any specific expectations going into it. This is also my first time reading a supernatural rom-com, and I have to say, it was quite an entertaining experience. It was a fun twist on Mr. & Mrs. Smith and the author did a nice job of bringing the comedy and romance to life. Savannah is a witch and the love of her life, Griffin, turns out to be a witch hunter, working to shut down supernatural threats. They are all set to be married, but before they seal the deal, they each find out the other's true identity. Soon after all is revealed they are each ordered to kill the other. But they soon learn that there is a threat out there to both of them, so maybe teaming up against that threat might be the better option!
This was an entertaining story and a fun twist on the movie. Definitely kept my attention all the way through. There was no doubt as to how strong the chemistry was between Savannah and Griffin, and there were plenty of fun moments that made me smile or laugh along the way. Glad to have had the change to read this!
I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Thank you so much to St. Martin’s Griffin and Netgalley for letting me read an eARC of Me. and Mrs. Witch. This cover was super cute, so I was super excited about reading it!
Mr. and Mrs. Witch 4/5 Stars
Summary from Goodreads: Mr. & Mrs. Witch, the next novel from bestselling author Gwenda Bond, a couple discovers at the altar the surprising secret identities they’ve kept from each other.
Savannah Wilde is a witch, a very powerful one—an identity that only her fellow witches know. Following a whirlwind romance that surprised herself and her family, Savvy is all set to marry the love of her life. But she isn’t the only one with a secret that needs to be kept, even from her soon-to-be husband.
Griffin Carter is a top agent for a clandestine organization that, well, used to primarily hunt witches, but now mainly tries to shut down supernatural threats their own way. He can’t wait to lay his eyes on the woman he’s about to spend the rest of his life with.
As Savvy walks down the aisle to Griffin, the wedding quickly goes from blessed day to shit show when their true identities are revealed. To say there’s bad blood between their factions is putting it mildly. Savvy and Griffin are tasked to take the other out, but when they discover a secret that could take down both of their agencies, they realize the only way to survive is to team up. With assassins hot on their trail, will Savvy and Griffin make it out alive to try again at ‘I do’?
Mr. and Mrs. Witch was super cute! I really enjoyed the past and present timelines throughout this book so we could learn about what’s going on with Savvy and Griffin now and learn about how Savvy and Griffin fell in love. I think it’s super cute that the two of them were in opposing, rival spy agencies, but of course neither of them knew it until their wedding day. I liked that after they tried killing each other and couldn’t do it, they started researching and figured out that there was actually something more sinister going on in their organizations. Character wise, not only did I really like Savvy and Griffin, but I also liked all of their friends a lot too. Plot and pacing wise I thought that everything was done really well and I was never bored or questioning what was going on. Overall, Mr. and Mrs. Witch was a fun read and I definitely think y’all should pick it up today!
I love the writing of Gwenda Bond. As expected, I enjoyed the story and the characters. This was an easy read that mixes romance with comedy and a little bit of science fiction - but not too much. I think my favorite part was that the 2 main characters were already in love, but then enemies and worked back towards love. This is probably my favorite of hers!
This was a great story that had a bit of everything.
Strangers to lovers
Lovers to enemies
Enemies to lovers
And to top it all off there was MAGIC. Yes, I mean literal Magic. Savannah is a witch and her fiance has no clue. Her fiance Griffin is a witch hunter and Savannah has no clue. Do you know when realization dawns? Their wedding day!!
Soon their wedding day goes from what dreams are made of to a true nightmare.
These two are perfect for each other and it was great to be able to see their chemistry. Although they tried to deny their feelings for each other it just seemed impossible. What's meant to be will always find a way!
This was a totally unique setup for a romance and I had a ton of fun reading it. Mr. & Mrs. Witch is a witchy take on Mr. & Mrs. Smith that follows a witch and a witch hunter who are unaware of each other’s identities until their wedding day. From there, this is an action packed romp, but it’s bogged down by flashbacks. I liked seeing the romance established but the flashbacks lasted way too long. I wanted more of the present day action and the two of them overcoming their differences. There’s also a great cast of supporting characters who I hope get their own spin-offs. This was good, not great, but I respect Gwenda Bond for writing something totally unique.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced review copy of “Mr & Mrs Witch” by Gwenda Bond. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
I saw on Goodreads that the author watched Mr & Mrs Smith and was inspired to write a similar story but also add magic. I haven’t seen that movie in a long time but one scene certainty read as being very closely inspired by a scene in the movie. I actually thought having such a beat for beat scene really took away from the story. It didn’t seem like enough to build an entire story around one scene from a movie.
The story felt like I missed a book in the series and this was the second book. I don’t think that’s the case? I didn’t feel established in the world. There are also a ton of characters on both sides (witches on one and the witch hunters on the other). I wish we had started with just the couple instead of having all their friends and family members thrown at us.
The story is told in present and flashbacks. I think flashbacks can work in a book but this one didn’t really work for me. It felt like the flashbacks should have been the first book and then the wedding and the fallout should have been the second. The flashbacks pulled me out of the story. It felt like I was reading two different books at once. There is also a lot of head hopping even though the book had two POVs. The flashbacks continued up to the end, even interrupting the main story climax to flashback.
Honestly, I’m getting kind of burnt out on contemporary romance witchy books. They’re not doing anything different from one another and they’re all running together at this point. I need to take a break from this contemporary romance but there are also witches genre.
Also I don’t think I enjoy the witch/witch hunter romance trope. It never seems like the couples should be together. It makes it difficult to keep reading because I know they’ll end up together but I don’t think they should.
3/5 stars
Another amazing adventure from Gwenda Bond! I love her fantasy romance and the way she takes you on adventures with her. I loved this one and highly recommend!
loved this romance and finding oneself and the how the couple worked out their problems . loved all of the side characters and the friendships. Good book.
What happens when a witch and a witch-hunter want to get married?
They find out that they have been lying to each other their entire relationship, but that is only the beginning.
Plot:
Alongside the main characters we uncover an entire hidden history between the witches and witch-hunters. We also discover that each side has created their own personal narrative to further their agendas. This is all interwoven with the story of Griffin and Savvy's love and how they got to a wedding.
Characters:
Savvy is a spy who fights evil and strips items of their magical power when necessary. She is also a powerful witch. Griffin is a witch-hunter.
I felt that their personalities were somewhat underdeveloped. I don't know what their hobbies, likes, dislikes, and
The side characters were really interesting and individualized. They added so much intrigue to the story, especially Savvy's friends and their interrogations.
Overall:
It was a quick read and fun story. Definitely a good choice if you want a witchy summer read!
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this book!
Labelled as a Mr. and Mrs. Smith, retelling, this witchy version I did a lot of fun and magic to make it a page turning read!
With witches being all the rage right now, I wasn’t sure if we were just going to get a simple retelling with a little magic thrown in, but this love story was so much more!
Told through current narrative and flashbacks, the reader gets a Romeo and Juliet, cursed romance story from the time that it falls apart (present) and they need to find a way to not only make it work, but save the world(!!), while at the same time detailing how they came together through flashbacks legitimizing the mystery of how a witch and a witch Hunter fell in love!
I love this opposites attract, us against the world romance. Full of great secondary characters and friends, the story was an absolute treat to watch unfold.
This book was definitely not your average witch!
Thanks to SMP Romance for my review copy. Opinions are my own.
I may have been just a bit generous with my 5 star review but Mr and Mrs Witch brought me so much joy and laughter that I just can't help myself.
What do you get when a Witch and a Witch Hunter fall in love and keep their identities a secret until they are accidentally revealed at the wedding ceremony? A love story for the ages with a ton of action and humor!
Loved the families and friends of both the MC's, they made all the difference in this humorous rom-com.
Secret identities in a Mr. & Mrs. Smith vibes book. If you love witches, or witchy books, give this a shot. I wanted to read it for that reason, but it’s very insta-love heavy, which is a trope I am not fond of. Nothing really stood out to make me love it though.
First off, thank you to #Netgalley for arc of this book. Although romance/supernatural isn’t my go to genre, I found I was really enjoying this! The two main characters had great chemistry and I was laughing at certain parts. I am glad I branched out and gave this one a try. Definitely looking at more books by this author. I enjoyed her writing.
This was laugh-out-loud funny. While battling each other and trying to save the world, things became fascinating. A spicy scenes make it a bit more provocative. I highly recommend it.
I love books about witches. And own probably a ridiculous number of them. So of course I had to grab Mr. & Mrs. Witch, a recent addition to the world of witchy reads. Delightfully quirky, funny and at times steamy, this book featured a cast of super adorable characters, lots of action and quite a bit of entertainment. Though it was quite a departure from the usual stories of magic and witches, I enjoyed it nevertheless.
Savannah Wilde and Griffin Carter have an unforgettable wedding day - in the worst way possible. Though very much in love, Savannah and Griffin kept something important from each other - she is an extremely powerful witch with an organization called C.R.O.N.E and he is a witch hunter for a rival group called H.U.N.T.E.R. Tasked with eliminating each other (permanently) the pair also finds themselves a target of an outsourced hit by an unknown entity.
It was impossible not to root for Savannah and Griffin. The title felt like a nod to Mr. & Mrs. Smith with a magical twist. Though some of the world building felt a bit unclear at times, the charming love story, interesting characters and flashbacks to how Savannah and Griffin met kept me so entertained that I didn't mind so much. There were quite a bit of humour and my favorite part of all - a fascinating group of animal familiars. This one is for fans of witchy fiction but also for those who love their love with a side of magic and action.
A big thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Savannah is a witch, but her fiancé, Griffin, doesn’t know that she is one. Savvy doesn’t know that Griffin is a witch hunter, sworn to hate witches. When they discover each others secrets, and find out that their leaders are up to something sketchy, Savvy and Griffin need to sort out if they will work together or against each other.
This was a fun, action-packed, magical book. The pace was steady throughout and the banter was enjoyable. There was a decent amount of spice if you like that in a romance book. I think the magical system could have been a bit more developed, but since this book was primarily romance I understand why it wasn’t so clearly “spelled” out. Overall, it was an enjoyable book.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Overall 3.75 stars; Would've been a 4 if the steamy scenes were written better.
I enjoyed the book but was a little disappointed with the romantic scenes as they seemed hastily written and just okay. I'd enjoy another book that focuses on Diego and Brie and maybe there's something brewing there? I liked the twist about Circe and the Butcher, but I saw it coming very early on, so it wasn't a big surprise.
I really wanted to enjoy this witchy rom-com, but by page 30 or so I was upset at the lack of depth with the two main protagonists. The plot was good, but the lack of connection I had to them, and their relationship, made this one of my most painful reads of recent memory. I really wish I could have enjoyed this book given its twist-on-a-classic-romcom-trope premise, but everything aside from the plot was painfully bland.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
One of my favorite movies is Mr. & Mrs. Smith so I went into this with high expectations. What really caught my eye was that there was a supernatural twist to this story. I honestly had a fun time reading this book! I loved Savanah and Griffins banter and they were hilarious. Griffin is a secret H.U.N.T.E.R agent passing as a cute and nerdy professor while Savanah is a powerful witch working for C.R.O.N.E. They fall in love but are from two different worlds and both hold big secrets that could ruin their relationship. I loved the almost forbidden romance aspect about this book and the ending was cute. Super cute PNR read!
