"Charles "Chuck" Mawhinney is a United States Marine who holds the Corps' record for the most confirmed sniper kills (and the second most of any US service member in history), having recorded 103 confirmed kills in 16 months during the Vietnam War. He was also the youngest—killing the enemy as a teenager."
This was a very easy to read book that tells the true story of Chuck Mawhinney, known for being the deadliest sniper during the Vietnam War.. We start with his childhood, when he first fell in love with shooting, particularly long distance shooting. We get to meet his grandfather, with whom he had a very special relationship, and explore the bond between them. We move on to his teenage years, where he was known more for drinking and carousing than anything else. He decided to join the Army in hopes of becoming a sniper, and although it was a bit of a circuitous route, he got his chance and excelled at it. We then follow him after his discharge and see what he did with himself as he got older.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a very quick, concise story, and I like that it continued the story into his adulthood and time out of the Army as well as his time within.
5/5 stars.
*** I would like to thank NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Jim Lindsay for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This book isn’t what I was expecting! It’s a quick read, and feels more like you’re sitting in your grandpas living room hearing stories about his past, rather than reading a book about Mawhinneys life and his time in the war. This isn’t a bad thing, but something to be aware of before diving into it! I am looking forward to my husband reading this as well and hearing his thoughts on it - this topic is more his usual read than it is mine. Thank you NG for the advanced copy!
Jim Lindsay's The Sniper tells the story of Charles Mawhinney, the deadliest sniper in Marine Corps history. A well written book, a quick read, engaging and entertaining. These are stories/recollections/memories/experiences of Mawhinney’s life, growing up and in Vietnam.
A quick read of Chuck Mawhinney life from the time he got his first gun to his time as a Marine Sniper to his activities after completing his tours in Vietnam.
This is not an in-depth life for a soldier serving in Vietnam but rather stories of Mawhinney’s experiences/memories that he might have recounted beside the fire in a tavern just like his grandpa and his friends used to do when Chuck was a young boy.
I liked that each chapter was had a title so that if you wished you could jump to the bits you were more interested in or go back to re-read a certain chapter.
Recommended to anyone wishing to learn a bit about the man who holds the title of deadliest Marine Sniper, his memories of serving in Vietnam or for a collector of Vietnam stories.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of The Sniper in exchange for an honest review.
I knew a little about this Marine Sniper. It’s hard not as the daughter of Marine. I think I know almost about the Marine Corps as some who has finished Marine Corp Basic training. But it was nice to get the full story.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of the book to review.
Unfortunately the book is more like extended PowerPoint slides per chapter with little insight into the man himself aside from his kill sheet.
That said, I appreciate the author taking the time to bring this man’s story to the public.
A quick read that tells the story of Chuck Mawhinny, a Marine sniper with 103 confirmed kills in Vietnam. The book is a biography rather than a dialogue of war. It reads like a novel but is true.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A truly inspirational novel! A great human interest biography. The story is well done and is sure to please. A great read!
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book. It is a very fast read. I enjoyed hearing about Chuck's adventures during the Vietnam War. The descriptions were very informative and I could visualize the areas the book mentioned. I would recommend this book to Vietnam War buffs and those interested in snipers.
The Sniper: The Untold Story of the Marine Corps' Greatest Marksman of All Time by Jim Lindsey ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
You know how your grandpa tells the same stories about growing up every time you get together, but you listen each time even though you’ve heard it before? That’s how this book read - like a multitude of war stories told during the regular Sunday dinner.
I found this book to be a bit disconnected in that the story didn’t flow from one place to the next. I can remember only two chapters where the ending of the first had anything directly to do with next. While it was chronological, it didn’t flow seamlessly. Instead, we got snippets; it would be fair to consider the chapters essays.
In other war stories I’ve read, I became emotionally invested in the story and connected to the character. That was not the case in this one. Because of the snippets, the story never had a foothold on any type of action. It read a bit clinical. And I never got a real sense of who Chuck was or even his sniping abilities. The reader was told that he had the record for most sniper kills, but that wasn’t demonstrated with the stories that were told.
7/10
Chuck Mawhinney was the most accomplished IS sniper in the Vietnam War, killing 103 enemy soldiers. This book is his biography.
But wait, it’s not the Vietnam book you’d expect. I find most books about the Vietnam being you deep into the jungle and the daily grind of hell on earth. Burning bodies, mutilation, horrific destruction of humankind.
Not this book.
This is more about Chuck than about the war. In fact, the vast majority of the book doesn’t even take place in Vietnam - it takes place before and after the war. Even more, this isn’t a detailed analysis of his 103 kills. Instead, it’s a few stories about camaraderie in Vietnam and a bunch of anecdotes about how great of a shot he is.
The book is less detailed research and more a documentation of stories recited by a old war veteran. The book is a representation of his memories and, as it turns out, most of Chucks memories are pretty good.
This was a quick read and I have to say it was pretty enjoyable.

A quick and fascinating read despite the choppy writing style. This book will appeal to readers interested in true war stories.
Excellent, fast paced, interesting and quick read. Perfect for those readers interested in the Vietnam War or snipers. Fascinating story of a man who didn't shirk his duty, fulfilled it to an amazing level, and then went home and resumed his life. No bragging, no attempting to cash in on his story. To me, that's the mark of a real hero!
Quick read about Charles Mawhinney, the most lethal sniper in US Marine history. I, admittedly knew very little about Mawhinney before reading this book. The stories from each phase of Mawhinney’s life were engaging. Good read for those interested in military, snipers and Vietnam.
Thank you to NetGalley for the early preview.
I've read several books by Jim Lindsay and have enjoyed them all. This one was no different. Fast paced, and easy to follow along with characters I've come to know and love. His books grab you and keep you wanting to read more. I highly recommend this book.
