This is a collection of short stories about a beautiful blue fish in a ocean called the Rainbow Fish. Every fish out there admired his shiny scales and when they tried to befriend him, he'd belittle them. After that, the other fish started avoiding him. Soon he realized his mistake. But he learns from his mistakes and makes new friends with the fish. The short stories are their adventures in the ocean.

I really liked this book. The illustrations were beautiful and all the stories told some moral lessons. This is a very important book for kids in my opinion. I would highly recommend this book!

I read The Rainbow Fish years and years ago when I was still a child. The shiny scales and stamped foil was beautiful even 20 years ago. The Rainbow Fish and His Friends is a collection of five stories and some fun and games at the end as well as a short interview with the author. The stories included are The Rainbow Fish, Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale, Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea, You Can't Win Them All, Rainbow Fish and Good Night, Little Rainbow Fish. It was fun to reread the first story since it is so well known and I had forgotten a lot about it. So this bundle is fun for old and new readers of The Rainbow Fish.

Thank you, NetGalley for allowing me to review this book.

I remember reading the book The Rainbow Fish a long time ago and I enjoyed it. This book however has several other Rainbow Fish stories within this one book. This is a beautiful book with illustrations that provides good life lessons for young children.

Stories within:
The Rainbow fish
Rainbow Fish and The Big Blue Whale
Rainbow Fish Discovers The Deep Sea
You Can't Win Them All, Rainbow Fish
Good Night, Little Rainbow Fish

There is a section called Fun And Games for children and adults to do together. This also provides a references list.

Since the majority of the population knows the story of The rainbow fish I will not touch on that story.

Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale:

Rainbow Fish and his friends encounter a whale while they were eating krill. The fish hurt the whale's feelings so the whale becomes angry. The Rainbow fish eventually finds the courage to speak to the whale to resolve the conflict.

Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep sea:

Rainbow Fish had one of its shiny scales fall off and it fell into the deep sea. A place where no fish go. Due to determination Rainbow fish went after it until he lost sight of scale. He meets and works with other animals that reside within the sea for him to find the missing scale.

You Can't Win Them All, Rainbow fish:
This story has Rainbow Fish playing a child's game with his friends. He got mad during the game and thought it was unfair. One of his friends explains that he is being a poor sport and should change.

Good night, little Rainbow Fish:

This story talks about being afraid to sleep so he seeks comfort from his parent until he falls asleep.

I picked up this book because of my love for The Rainbow Fish as a child. This turned out to be a collection of short stories and I really enjoyed each one. The illustrations are vibrant and beautiful and the stories themselves (while short) each held a valuable life lesson. Some of these lessons included how to be a good sport at games with friends, why it is important to share and not hoard resources, why we shouldn't be afraid just because someone looks or lives differently than us, and more! Additionally at the end of the book the author included some recipes/activities which was a cute touch. I definitely recommend!

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Rainbow Fish, this is a collection of 5 Rainbow Fish stories. I am very familiar with the original Rainbow Fish, but enjoyed the other stories as well. I especially enjoyed Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea as it introduces readers to the creatures in the deepest parts of the ocean, especially the ones that "glow". Would be a great addition to a home or classroom library.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I remember buying a board book of The Rainbow Fish for my toddler twenty years ago. Honestly, I think I was more charmed by the beauty of this book than my son was! It was just so beautifully rendered...this illustration of a multicolored jewel-toned fish with blue, purple and silvery shiny foil scales. This 5-story anthology of The Rainbow Fish commemorates the 30-year anniversary for this iconic children's book series. Here is a summation of the instructive stories within:

THE RAINBOW FISH

The Rainbow Fish is very beautiful with a multitude of shiny scales. A Little Blue Fish comes by, admiring The Rainbow Fish, and asks for a shiny scale. Rainbow Fish rebuffs Little Blue Fish, refusing to give any of his scales away. The Little Blue Fish retreats and tells all the other fish about this clash, and now the others are wary of The Rainbow Fish. The Rainbow Fish is now troubled, and confides in a nearby starfish, who refers him to the wise octopus in a cave. Afterwards, The Little Blue Fish comes around to explain himself. Hesitantly, reluctantly, The Rainbow Fish is moved to give his smallest shiny scale to the Little Blue Fish. The Little Blue Fish is so happy and pretty that The Rainbow Fish decides to give out shiny scales to all the other fish until he himself is left with only one shiny scale. However, as he looks around at all the beautiful, shiny...and now happy/friendly fish...he is now very happy as well!

RAINBOW FISH AND THE BIG BLUE WHALE

The fish encounter a big, blue whale and through some misunderstandings become afraid of him. It scared off the krill that all the fish like to eat, when everything had been so harmonious before. Eventually, The Rainbow Fish drums up the courage to confront the big, blue whale. They resolve the misunderstanding that had caused the whale to be so hurt and angry. The big, blue whale now becomes the protector of the fish, as they all happily search for a new feeding ground.

RAINBOW FISH DISCOVERS THE DEEP SEA

Something happened where Rainbow Fish's one shiny scale got blown off his body and went down into the deep sea where the fish are too afraid to venture. But, Rainbow Fish wanted his shiny scale back so badly that he chased it until he lost track of it at the bottom of the sea. Luckily he met the firefly squid who was able to light up parts of the ocean, along with various other breeds of fish Rainbow Fish had never seen before. They all work together to light up the ocean bottom and look for the missing shiny scale. Once Rainbow Fish returned to the top and his regular fish friends, he told them that the others were "beautiful, but different; they turned out to be wonderful friends just like you!"

YOU CAN'T WIN THEM ALL, RAINBOW FISH

Rainbow Fish is playing hide and seek with his fish friends. When it was Rainbow Fish's turn to look for the hiding fish, he couldn't find anybody. They all had good hiding places and fooled Rainbow Fish. That's why when it was Rainbow Fish's turn to hide, he got angry when Little Blue Fish discovered him right away. Rainbow Fish was so annoyed he left in a huff. It took his friend Red Fin to explain to Rainbow Fish that Little Blue Fish was inexperienced and never got to win in the past, and that Rainbow Fish should congratulate him and be a good sport about the whole thing. So that's what he did, and they all became friends again and were happy.

GOOD NIGHT, LITTLE RAINBOW FISH

This was a super cute story. Rainbow Fish is too scared to go to sleep. His mommy fish is right there to comfort him. Rainbow Fish keeps bringing up all these scary scenarios that could happen while he's sleeping. His momma fish has to keep assuring him that she will be right there to protect him, no matter what...until Rainbow Fish finally goes peacefully to sleep with momma by his side.

FUN AND GAMES

At the end of the book there are several activity pages:

- Recipe for Rainbow Fish sugar cookies with frosting. Super cute! Wonderful pictures of the dough cutting and how the final product should look (glitter sprinkles and food coloring).

- "Color in the Rainbow Fish" where you can use the image to make multiple copies...good for parents, caregivers and teachers.

- "Can You Find The Way" maze where Rainbow Fish has to make it through to his mother at the other end.

- "Fantastic Underwater World" shows an illustration of the ocean bottom with its colorful plant life. Has a list of materials such as a drawing pad, watercolor paints, small sponge and crayons with directions to create your own illustration.

- "Rainbow Fish Bookmark" gives a list of supplies such as felt, cardboard, sequins and googly eyes to make a Rainbow Fish Bookmark, with a picture of the finished product.

I really enjoyed the "Author's Note" where Marcus Pfister talked about how The Rainbow Fish came about. He had previously written a book about an owl, and his editor advised him to write another book along the same lines. So, the author had the book about the owl laying sideways on a desk, and from that vantage point the owl resembled a fish. And thus, the owl illustration morphed into The Rainbow Fish. The thing Marcus Pfister is most proud about is of The Rainbow Fish's non-superhero status; he's just a gentle character who makes mistakes, but through those tribulations learns valuable lessons such as generosity, humility, forgiveness, etc. The Rainbow Fish is a sympathetic figure that has endured through generations.

I think this is a gorgeous book chock full of good life lessons for children, presented in such a gentle, beautiful way. I am actually tempted to buy this for myself! I also love the activities at the end of the book. If I had this when my son was a little tyke I would have enjoyed trying some of them with him. Oh, well...maybe one day there will be grandchildren!

Thank you to North South Books for providing an advance reader copy via NetGalley.

This collection of Rainbow Fish is sure to delight readers of all ages. This is the perfect supplement for my prek class as there are valuable lessons embedded within each story. For instance, teaching students about sharing is a strong theme for the first story, "The Rainbow Fish." The second story, "Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale" examines how one should be careful not to spread rumors and how saying mean words can cause someone to get hurt. I like how there are fun extension activities, crafts, and even a recipe at the end of the book.

Thank you to Marcus Pfister, the publisher, and NetGalley for this advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
