Did not much care for this book. It lacked detail and the characters and story line were hard to follow. Lost interest and ended up not finishing. Willing to give author another try if more come out

I was really excited for this book because I liked Cry of the Innocent. I was interested in what would happened to Faith. However, not much was happening in the story. It was very slow and the mystery was very predictable. Still, I like how it was set before the eve of the American Revolution which was a refreshing time period from reading Victorian mysteries. It just was not as strong as the first novel. Still, I’m interested in the future installment and hope the next book will be better. I recommend this novel for fans of The Turncoat’s Widow, City of Liars and Thieves, and This Day is Ours!

I have never read a historical mystery before and what a great read. Reading the way life was back in 1775. Just the way the author wrote it made me believe I was there. Being a Canadian I basically did not know about this time period and the way they lived back then. The murder mystery was well written, and the plot was laid out perfectly. It kept me hooked to the end and find out who the murder was a complete surprise. Julie Bates has got me hooked on historical mysteries. I highly recommend this book.

An interesting and readable historical novel (more so than a mystery!) from the 1775's. Williamsburg, Virginia with chaos all around them. Who has poisoned Ezra and will his daughter in-law Faith be able to get to the bottom of it?

This is a boo that is pretty easy to read and is fairly well written. It has all the historical aspects you would expect and an interesting storyline along with some good characters which makes it enjoyable. I didn't find it overly mysterious or even thrilling, just a good historical telling of a tale.

A well written and interesting depiction of the time. The character's were well written and I like Faith as a character. It did keep me interested to the end but I was a little disappointed in the mystery side as there didn't seem any real attempt to solve the case in a step by step manner more a lurching from suspect to suspect with the villain being found out by the chance finding of something in his room. Overall though I did enjoy it and would give it 3.5. It was my first read of this author will try more of her work. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Faith Clarke’s father in law is murdered and as he lays dying he asks her to find who poisoned him. It’s a hard job with looking at family who may have wanted the man’s wealth, but working with Jeremy Butler, Patriot spy, there is no loss for suspects. Will Jeremy find someone who opposed Ezra, or will Faith find the culprit in the family? Only time will tell as colonists fight on for their freedom as Faith and Jeremy search for answers.

Having lived in Williamsburg for awhile, i absolutely love Colonial History. As I read this book I was back in the old town and walking the streets as I read the story. I enjoyed the mystery and the visit back to the ‘Burg.

I liked this well plotted and engrossing historical mystery. It kept me hooked, I liked the characters, and the mystery is solid.
