Andrea Oliver has just graduated from U.S. Marshal Service training and her first case assignment hits pretty close to home. Assigned to protect a judge is just part of her assignment. Her uncle wants her to investigate an unsolved murder from 1982 in hopes of keeping her father behind bars.
I'm a relatively new fan of Karin Slaughter. I only discovered her books 5 years ago and I've enjoyed the 5 books I've read so far. I don't usually listen to suspense and thriller audiobooks, but her stories are so captivating that I tend to become solely focused on the story.
I didn't realize that Girl, Forgotten was book two in the Andrea Oliver series. But it doesn't matter. I assume book one is focused on why Andrea and her mother are in the Witness Protection Program. As this is only the second book and Andrea is just embarking on her Marshal Service career and the case is related to her own past there is plenty of backstory to let you get to know the characters.
I really liked Andrea and her complex past makes for an interesting story. I assume we will see more of Mike in future books as he is the marshal who oversees Andrea's mother's witness protection. He is full of personality so it will be fun to watch the complicated relationship between him and Andrea. I'm not sure if Leonard Bible, her partner, will appear in future books as she hasn't decided on which area she wants to go into. I liked him though and hope to see him again.
Girl, Forgotten is a dual timeline story. We switch between Emily in 1982 and Andrea in present day. My only real complaint about the story is that there are no immediate indications that we have switched timelines which I think is more confusing when listening to the audiobook. You figure it out within the first paragraph or so of a new chapter but I would have liked for there to have been a chapter heading or something so it was evident right from the start of the chapter.
Emily's story was a real eye-opener to the early 1980s for me. I was just a child then so I didn't really know misogynistic it was. I'm sure my eyes were bugging out of my head during the interaction she had with her pediatrician (a man). I was like how the heck was this a doctor let alone a doctor for children.
Kathleen Early does a great job as the narrator. There are a lot of characters some of them appear in both timelines and I felt they were all given distinct voices which made the story easy to follow.
The audiobook is kind of long - almost 16 hours - but I was so focused on the story that the time flew by yet at the same time I feel like I "got my money's worth" so to speak. If you are looking for a story that will suck you in, then this is the book to pick up.
My review will be published at Girl Who Reads on Tuesday - https://www.girl-who-reads.com/2022/08/girl-forgotten-by-karin-slaughter.html
Summary: In 1982, pregnant Emily Vaughn is murdered on her prom night.
Fast forward 40 year, and Andrea Oliver has graduated US Marshall academy and her first assignment is to protect a federal judge who has been getting death treats. However this is just a cover, because Andrea is also there to solve the murder of Emily.
Review: It has been way to long since I’ve read a Karin Slaughter book. This book was fast paced and I didn’t want to put it down. The way Karin weaved together the two storylines was phenomenal. I’m going to go back now and reread her other books,
4.5/5 stars
Thank you Blackstone Publishing for the advanced listening copy of this book!
1982: Emily Vaughn attends the prom in hometown Longbill Beach with a big secret... one that will get her killed. Forty years later, her murder remains unsolved. Newly graduated US Marshall, Andrea Oliver, heads to Longbill Beach-- on the surface to protect a judge receiving death threats, but actually to uncover Emily's killer. With Emily's family isolated amongst themselves and her former group of friends turned unreachable, Andrea must work to find the killer to protect herself and many others.
This was a great follow up to Karin Slaughter's PIECES OF HER, the first in the Andrea Oliver duology. Narrated by Kathleen Early, the audiobook is fast-paced and unputdownable. I actually enjoyed this one more than the first, though that one was great, as well. Slaughter weaves such complex stories, leaving no stone unturned in a character's history. One might think this unnecessary but, in fact, it only leaves the reader wanting more. More information, more pages, and more of her writing! This book had a bit less action than Slaughter's previous work, but I enjoyed the thorough character development and slow burn of this story very much. Overall, a fantastic second edition in what I hope to be a longer Andrea Oliver series.
Andrea Oliver is back and better than ever. Girl, Forgotten proves to be the exception to the rule that the sequel is rarely better than the first book in a series.
Synopsis: Longbill Beach, 1982. It’s prom night. Emily Vaughn is pregnant and socially isolated from her friends. Her night ends with being murdered. Nearly 40 years later, Andrea Oliver graduates as a US Marshall and is assigned to work in Longbill Beach to protect a judge who is receiving death threats. However, Andrea’s real focus isn’t the judge, it’s solving Emily Vaughn’s murder. Can she figure out what happened in this small town 40 years ago?
Review: I read this book in less than 24 hours. It is totally bingeable and a very strong sequel to Pieces of Her. This investigative, suspenseful read realistically portrayed trying to solve a 40 year old case in a town that is full of secrets. The interspersed flashback chapters were a great way to plant clues and provide the reader additional context as Andrea tries to identify Emily’s killer and baby daddy. It seems like Slaughter has set herself up for another book in this series, and I really hope that it happens! Andrea and her partner Bible make a great duo.
Excellent as an audio!
GIRL, FORGOTTEN is really smart Karin Slaughter. I hadn't researched the book before I started listening to the audio and then quickly realized we knew these characters - which picks up a few years after PIECES OF HER.
This is partly Andrea's coming of age as a United States Marshal, luckily teamed with an irresistible partner/friend/mentor named Bible, and partly a mystery of an unsolved murder from the 1980s. Tasked with protecting a Federal Court Judge while simultaneously unraveling the secrets of the town that continue to compromise the safety and welfare of women, the book is a fast-paced novel that doesn't shy away from the depravity and danger that threaten young women.
This was a good one! I listened to the audio version and I thought it was really well done. There are multiple timelines in the book and I never got confused about what timeline I was in. The mystery was complex and their are multiple story lines to keep you guessing.
The main character is a new US Marshal and she is a badass. I’m always here for strong female characters. Her partner and her boss are pretty amusing characters, and they helped lighten the mood on what could be some darker topics.
This is technically a second in the series, but I didn’t know that going in and feel like this book absolutely stands on its own. I do think that the ending leaves an opening for another book though, which I feel like I would happily read.
This totally gave off the vibes of the TV show In Plain Sight, which was on the USA network about 10 years ago. I loved that show and I think that’s part of why I loved this book so much.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and William Morrow and Company for the opportunity to listen to this audioARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
I'm a huge Karin Slaughter fan, so I was so excited to be able to read an early copy of her new book Girl, Forgotten, and it was really good!! This is book # 2 in the Andrea Oliver series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone as well. I absolutely love Karin Slaughter's writing style. Her books IMMEDIATELY pull me in and they are impossible to put down. Her captivating writing, attention to detail and multilayered characters make each book easy to enjoy! As with most of Slaughter's books, this one can be graphic and heartbreaking. I would definitely check trigger warnings before diving into this one. This book is told from multiple POVs with multiple timelines. We have Andreas POV from the present, and Emily's POV from the past. I loved both POV so much, for different reasons. I loved Andrea's POV because I loved the mystery, the drive and the passion she had for the work she was doing (also, I Loved Bible). I loved Emily's POV because you just can't help but love sweet, kindhearted Emily. At times I felt such overwhelming sadness for her and everything she had gone through in her short life. I read this one as an audiobook and it's LONG, just over 15 hours but I honestly flew through it as fast as I could. I thought the narrator did such a good job making the story we listen to captivating and emotional. Overall - I recommend this one!

Thank you Blackstone Publishing for my gifted ALC!
Well - this was a mix of:
1. Pieces of Her was amazing - I can't wait for this 2nd installment!
2. This isn't Pieces of Her. But ok - I can deal.
3. This is slow. Not in a building up to explode kinda slow. Just slow.
4. Too many side stories, too many characters, too much emphasis on things that had no bearing on the story.
5. I can't wait for it to end.
6. It ended. It was fine. Too tidy, and I likely won't pick up the next installment, if there is one.
Yeah - this was a let down and one that TOOK FOREVER TO FINISH!!!
Moving along!
Thank you Blackstone Publishing for my gifted audiobook and William Morrow for my gifted finished copy!
I loved Girl, Forgotten... even more than Pieces of Her! Andrea is fresh out of training to be a US Marshal, which you can imagine how her mom feels about that career path. She is assigned to her first case that has a twist which includes a murder of a young girl that happened almost 40 year prior.
Here is what I loved:
1. I already knew the context, thanks to Pieces of Her so I felt that this book jumped right into the action.
2. I enjoy Andrea's story and how different she is from her mom.
3. The ending was SO good, but I can't say anything else about that.
No critiques here - an easy 5 stars from me!
I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narrator. It was easy to follow with the dual storyline/timelines.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for my Audio ALC of Girl, Forgotten by Karin Slaughter. This book publishes Tuesday, August 23!
This was my first KS novel and it kind of… fell flat for me? Probably because I listened to it. Thrillers are hit or miss for me in audio, but I got approved for the audio from netgalley, so I thought why not? I enjoyed the mystery/suspense of trying to figure out who killed Emily Vaughn. But I think my expectations were too high? I expected lots of crazy, gruesome, gory details and I just feel like this one didn’t have that? Again, could be because I listened to it. Let me know if you have read it and what you thought!
This is another excellent book by Karin Slaughter! It made me want to listen to the whole book in 1 day. The characters are well developed and it keeps you guessing as to who killed Emily and who was the baby's father. Not to mention what is going on at the farm. I hope this peeks your interest and you read/listen to this book for yourself. I highly recommend it!!!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for allowing me to review the ARC. :)
Bodacious & Brazen Brownies! 😳😯🤯
Holy Bageezus Bagels & Cream Cheese! Yet again, Slaughter does it again! This novel was everything and more to me! And the fact I got the audiobook version, with a fab narrator made this even more deliciously dark & dynamite! I can't even begin to express how this novel sucks you in, kidnaps you & then proceeds to leave you with no direction because you're left in the dark of a novel and the build up and uncovering is stupendous! Seriously this will throw you around like my dog with her squeaky toy carrot!
Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: It was Prom Night in 1982 and Emily was determined to go, even with her bearing a secret everyone knew. Little did she realize, that by the end of the night, a night she was forewarned against going out for, turned sinister and deadly.
Andrea has just entered into the U.S. Marshals and already accepted her first assignment to look after a high profile Judge and her family, after some consistent and disturbing death threats. Little does she realize, The Judge was the mother to Emily. Like a dog with a bone, Andrea has to find out what happened because the connections could be personal.
Absolutely sensational plot, the coming together of everything for a wicked ending and crazy deliver. Incredibly outstanding and so deviant I couldn't listen fast enough! I both needed to know the ending but didn't want to finish this yummy thriller. Strategic, heart-stopping, enticing & lip-smacking, spine-tinglingly impressive. As always I devoured Slaughter's book with no shame, no regret, no guilt, & pure excitement.
Thank you to NetGalley & Blackstone Publishing - Audiobooks for this ARC.

𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭: 4.5 / 5 Beach Waves! 🌊
Oh Karin, you have done it again. You once again disturbed me in a way I never thought was possible, and I loved every second of it.
I so enjoyed Girl Forgotten. I seriously could not stop listening to this one.
I was so heartbroken for Emily. My jaw just hits the floor every time I think about what she went through.
This is another great addition to the Andrea Oliver series. I cannot wait to see what comes next
I struggled with this book. At times there felt like multiple storylines and it just never fully came together, including one of those storylines becoming clearly what this new series will be based upon and thus not concluded. The audiobook narrator was pretty good but these chapters were typically 45 minutes to an hour long and I really struggled with that as it's hard to carve out that much time at a go rather than with shorter chapters. I do wonder if I could've kept better track of everything that was going on if I'd read it in the physical format.
Calling all thriller fans!!! You need to snap this beauty up.
I must apologize that I've been referring to this book as Girl, Disappeared for the past week 🙈🙈🙈 (the downfall of reading a kindle and not seeing the cover everytime I pick it up)...
I read someone's review of this on booksta and it totally piqued my interest. I was quarter of the way through before I made the connection that it was a follow up to "Pieces of her". But having said that you don't need to have read Pieces of her to make sense of this gem! It can be a perfect stand alone.
1982, Longbill Beach and 17 yr old Emily Vaughn, heavily pregnant is running away from her prom when she's brutally murdered.
Almost 40 yrs later new US Marshall Andrea Oliver is sent to Longbill Beach on another case, but Andrea has personal reasons why she want to look into the unsolved case of Emily Vaughn....
... Cue twists, turns and an edge of your seat storyline! I had no idea of the culprit till the very last moment. A fantastic, yet heartbreaking story that totally will hook you and reel you in and keep you guessing till the very end ..
Thank you NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
DNF @57%. I tried so hard to get into this book, but I just couldn't. I think a lot of it was because I couldn't connect with the characters like I normally do in Karin Slaughter's books. It didn't have the suspense and thrill that I have come to love with her books. This book had a lot of potential but just fell flat. I ultimately DNF'd because I kept moving on to other things and dreaming of other books reading this.
The follow up novel to Slaughter's Pieces of Her did not disappoint! I loved the story line for Andrea's life after learning about her mother, father, and all the lies she was told over the years. In this book, Andrea Oliver is now a U.S. Marshal sent to a small town by the name of Longbill Beach. There she meets "Catfish" Bible, her new partner, and learns her assignment: protecting a judge who has been receiving death threats. Andrea quickly learns that the murder of this judge's daughter, Emily Vaughn, is a four-decades old unsolved case. Several of the characters from Pieces of Her reappear in this follow-up novel (haven't decided if we're calling it a sequel?? Or maybe just second in a new series!) Fans of Karin Slaughter, especially fans of Pieces of Her, will enjoy this one! I definitely did!! The twists and turns readers have come to expect from Karin Slaughter remain a touchstone in her storytelling - and I am here for it! With multiple POVs and time jumping, we get a story within a story here and not to give anything away, but readers may not get the conclusion they expected when first starting this! I'm eagerly hopeful for a book 3 in the Andrea Oliver series.
Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow & Company for access to the audiobook version of Girl, Forgotten!
5 stars out of 5
This second installment of the Andrea Oliver series was decent, but not spectacular. I wasn't a huge fan of Andrea in the first book (Pieces of Her, but time has passed and she is now graduating from the US Marshals program. She has grown a backbone and ambition in the meantime, which I was thrilled to see.
This follows two cases--one is from 1982, a cold case about a pregnant teenager who was murdered. Currently a federal judge has had threats on her life, and she just happens to be the mother of the murdered teenager. Also...Clayton Morrow/Nicholas Harp (Andrea's psycho father who is in prison) might be involved with the teen girl's death, and it would be great to prove that in order to keep him behind bars. Andrea meets up with her new partner, Leonard "Catfish" Bible, and they set out to keep the judge safe, while Andrea investigates the cold case secretly on the side.
I thought that the case in the past was a bit too convoluted, too many characters, and not enough of what happened was explained in the end.
Again this is a straightforward story. A bit slow, but I liked Catfish and the interplay between him and Andrea. Everything unfolded deliberately, there are a couple of decent twists, but there are too many side stories and things that they spend way too much time on (like the girls in the cult) and not enough solving the actual crime(s) they were hired to investigate. Although I wouldn't mind seeing more books featuring Andrea and the US Marshals, I'm just done with this Clay/Nick storyline. Someone needs to kill him in prison so we don't have to hear more about his smarmy character.
I listened to half of this as an audiobook, and Kathleen Early does a great job with her narration, as she did with Pieces of Her (and all of Slaughter's books for that matter). It definitely kept me involved with the story even though it was way too long in my opinion. Compared to some of Slaughter' other books, this one was pretty tame with regards to violent content.
Overall, I liked this book, but didn't love it. Worth reading if you're a Slaughter fan or liked the first book in the series.
Andie is much less frustrating in this novel than in Pieces of Her, however this book moved frustratingly slow.. The story moves through alternating chapters of past and present- a pregnant girl is found dead and Andie, who is unbelievably US Marshall, is on her first case… because it could mean keeping her father in prison. It was an OK book but I will admit Im holding out for the next Wil Trent book. These just bide my time between Grant county books.
This fast-paced thriller that takes place in two timelines: the present and 1981. “Girl, Forgotten” is a sequel to Slaughter’s excellent “Pieces of Her.”
I enjoyed Slaughter’s writing, but the idea of Emily’s friends (since Kindergarten) turning on her, just felt off to me. Sometimes, I can’t get a problem like that out of my head enough to really enjoy the book. Really, after 17 years of growing up with her four best friends, they ALL turn against her in the worst possible way? I could buy the premise, if they hadn’t been close friends since Kindergarten…if she had only known them as fellow classmates, not as best friends. I wish Slaughter had restructured Emily’s dilemma to be more believable. I’m sure this will be a five star book for most mystery readers and certainly Slaughter’s many fans..
The audiobook production and the narrator are excellent.
