Set in the American West just before and during the Civil War, THE CAREY BLOOD is the first in a trilogy where a father's harsh treatment of his son cause a rift that will last their lifetimes. The backstory is set in a very realistic western community of ranchers. Their challenges are met with determination and often, violence.

As William Carey fought to build his ranch, he set an example for his son, Thomas, the central character in this trilogy. William has pushed Thomas to marry and settle on the Carey ranch. As he tries to take control of his own life, Thomas will decide his best option is to leave. At this point, he joins the Confederate Army.

I'm a fan of the western genre, in fact of many genres. While this does have a western backstory, the main story line is of Thomas Carey and his actions and consequences. It's a very good story line and this first book sets up the character's history, giving us the chance to know Thomas Carey. I'd recommend it to just about everyone in my reading circle.
