Historical thriller based on true events in a Spanish flu era when gianna is trying to find who did what to her family with her friend enzo.
Gianna was a strong girl, wanted to know more and want to solve what happen to her family.
In real honesty, I’m having a hard time to listen on this one. The narrator doesn’t have any feelings to portray the story. I have to speed up the story telling but doesn’t justify the goodness of the story. Will probably read the story in a physical book. Dnf.

In the throws of War and Spanish Influenza, Gianna and her friend Enzo are on the hunt for the serial killer who attacked their families.

Don’t Go to Sleep had me not wanting to sleep until I finished it. What a wonderfully written psychological thriller.
Based on true events of the War, Influenza and the Axeman murders of the early 1900s, this book was thoroughly researched and felt like you were right in the thick of it all. This book had everything I didn’t know I needed in a historical thriller. I was the perfect amount of spooky and bloody. The characters were all really well written and Gianna was such a wonderful narrator to follow. Everything about the book was neatly tied up in the end and the ending was satisfying.
This book is not one to miss.
(I did not love the narrator. I found her voice very slow and monotone and I could have fallen asleep listen to it slower than 2x speed. )
Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Fire for the audio galley in exchange for an honest review!
Thanks to NetGalley, I was able to listen to the audiobook version of this story. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t my favorite either. Being set in the 1900’s during the Spanish flu felt far too much like the recent Covid-19 situation and I didn’t realize how tired I was of reading about pandemics until this moment. I’d have preferred this story to be set in a different time, but that’s on me.
This story felt incredibly well researched. It’s a historical mystery and that was what really had me sold on it. I love mysteries and historical fiction is really growing on me so I thought a combination would be perfect. It was - but at the same time it wasn’t.
I think maybe the narrator was part of the problem. It felt slightly monotoned- that’s not quite the right word but it’s as close as I can get to how I feel. I needed more from the narrator - emotions, more expressive speech - I’m not sure what I needed but I know I needed more.
The teenage detective storyline was good and the way they went about their investigation was creative and I did enjoy it.
Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - it was fine, but I expected more.
Gianna experienced a terrible attack on her family when she was younger, but seven years later, the killer is back. Gianna and her friend Enzo set out to find the killer, but Gianna finds a coin that connects her to the killer. Trying to save her town, Gianna uses this connection to the killer to help, but gets herself into deeper trouble.
Wow! So this story follows Gia, she lives in New Orleans around the time Influenza happens and WWI. She is 17 years old and her history haunts her as well as her best friend Enzo. See Enzo and Gia have a traumatic event that both experienced separately but they bonded over. When they were younger Gia was 10 an ax killer broke into their homes and attacked their parents. While everyone survived it was a hard time because the killer was never found. Now, the attacks have started happening again and this brings Gia to start having flashes of the killings in her dreams. She had always had nightmares about that night but this time it is different, it's the killings that are happening now. So Gia and Enzo partner up to stop this killer before he kills more people and children!
Oh man, this one is really good and it's one that you won't be able to put down because it's so good and addicting. You have to know what happens next! I loved the historical aspects, so much was brought to life that I never knew about. I love the relationship Gia and Enzo have. Enzo is soo far into love with Gia he would move mountains for her if she asked him but, Gia is still on the fence because she doesn't want to ruin their friendship by throwing romance into the relationship. If you want a good historical fiction horror story then you will love this one! I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who loves paranormal horror too! This would be a great fall read! Thank you Netgalley and Tantor Audio for the chilling listening experience!
I rarely have an issue with the narrator, but this one was so monotone and slow speaking it about put me to sleep. I'll try reading the book instead of listening to it.
After reading the second book by Bryce Moore I have learned a few things. 1) I love the historical murder retellings 2) there isn't ENOUGH murder/darkness for me apparently. His first book was really good but I felt like something was missing. This book was also really good but I felt it lacked something. I will keep reading him in hopes of finding the one book that feels complete for me. Either way, his books are highly enjoyable.
I had no idea the Axeman even existed until I watched American Horror Story so having an author write about lesser known murderers is awesome. I know it's not lesser known but I'd love to see the author do Jack the Ripper.
I also LOVED Daniela Acitelli. She gave Gianna such an authentic Italian feel. Hell, she gave the entire book an authentic feel. I haven't listened to her before this but I will definitely keep an eye out for her in the future.
4/5 stars.
I will have a post up on Instagram soon and will try to remember to update this.
What an interesting retelling.
So many people have heard of the Axeman of New Orleans and wanted to learn more since the culprit was never caught. If you were a victim, how would you get involved to find the criminal?
The main story is about an Italian family running a grocery store when both the Axeman and Spanish Flu come through New Orleans. It was a bit eerie how much of the storyline relating to the Spanish Flu is mirrored in today’s world with the current pandemic.
The description of the book mentions a relationship between the protagonist and the Axeman as being unusual and it is; I do still have lingering questions regarding this.
Having visited NOLA many years ago, I could just imagine the setup of the streets and buildings, the beignets and interest in otherworldly things. I feel like this story had so many different things going on that I wanted more to be flushed out by the end.
I did have the audiobook and wonder if reading an ebook or physical copy would’ve put me in a different mood as I wanted a bit more from the reading of it. Overall, it was an interesting take with a twist in the retelling as no one can know for sure what happened to the Axeman.
Thank you so much to the author, Bryce Moore, Tantor Audio and NetGalley for the audio arc of this book!

This is loosely based on the axeman murders and I enjoyed how the author incorporated this into a chilling historical fiction. Gianna and her family survived the axemans first attempt at their lives and now he’s back. Along with her friend, Enzo, Gia sets out to investigate the motive behind the attacks in hopes that she can stop the next one.
This book filled my need for a historical fiction read; set in 1918 New Orleans, it’s at a time when the world is on the cusp of change – World War I is ending and the world is in the grips of the Spanish Flu pandemic. I liked how the author incorporated these real-world events with the fictional lives of Gia and Enzo.
Daniela Acitelli narrates and she does a phenomenal job!
If you’re looking for a chilling historical fiction with a hint of supernatural elements, give this one a go!
Thank you to Tantor Audio for this gifted ALC and to Sourcebooks Fire for this gifted ARC!
1918 - New Orleans
Gianna is seventeen years old living in a world where WWI has come to an end, people are dying from the 1918 influenza pandemic/Spanish Influenza pandemic, there is anti-Italian sentiment, and an axe man is killing store owners.
Gianna and her family survived the man with the axe, but he is now back, killing with an axe. Gianna and her friend, Enzo decide to investigate the killings for themselves. Gianna has been plagued by nightmares since her parents were attacked. She is motivated to catch him before it's too late!
This book is loosely based on the real serial killer known as the Axeman of New Orleans who killed Italian Immigrants. There is a supernatural element toward the end of the book.
I enjoyed the historical aspect of this book and the quest to find a killer. The author did her research as she depicts the attitude towards Italian Americans at that time as well as the severity of the Spanish flu. This book is in the YA category but can easily be enjoyed by anyone.
I listened to the audiobook and wondered what my experience would have been had I read the book. I was hoping for a little more oomph from the narrator at times.
I found this to be an enjoyable book and appreciated the historical aspect.

Don't Go to Sleep by Bryce Moore
Mr. Moore takes a historical true crime story from the past and does it in a retelling. The main character is 17 year old Gianna who helps her family with their grocery store. She and her family was attacked by the axe man before and survived. Her best friend Enzo and her try to unravel the axe man because the police are not figuring it out.
I liked that the author took the story from history and put his own spin to it. I also like that this true crime happened during the time of influenza outbreak of 1918. It was well written and entertaining to read. I was pulled in pretty fast. I am always fascinated by New Orleans and this being a true crime spin off is what I needed.
Gianna continues to have nightmares and the killings are continuing. The story fell in place orderly and everything made sense.
Daniela Acitelli did a great job bringing the characters to life. I would recommend this book it was quick and easy to listen too and the story was easy to follow along with. If you like a little paranormal spin on a true crime retelling then this book is for you.
Thank you to Netgalley and Tantor Audio for a free copy of this audio book for an honest review.
How do feel consuming True Crime? This book is guilty indulge of being a true crime fan without any guilt… just like vampire romance I could see the MC ‘s romantic twisted sexual connecting undertones with a notorious killer it’s not the love that one would learn or read and fall into… it’s nature bonding a sheep and a butcher in a twisted fate of fateful meet. A must read one of its kind… #netgalley #Dontgotosleep
I would like to thank Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to listen to this audiobook of Don't Go to Sleep, however I found the Narrator to be monotone and it was really hard for me to get through, I DNFed about 30% in and would like to pick up a physical copy .
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for the chance to listen to this one.
Hmmmm, I was excited after reading the summary and thought I would enjoy this one.
I just couldn’t get into it. I didn’t enjoy the narrator. And the storyline was confusing right from the start. At this point I have opted to not finish and move on to something else. Maybe I’ll try to revisit it at a later time but I dunno.
DON'T GO TO SLEEP is a compelling fictional narrative of a long-standing. fascinating, true crime cold case, "the Axeman of New Orleans," the brutal serial killer who terrorized the Italian community of New Orleans and nearby cities in 1918-1919. Much has been written about this reign of terror, but the killer's identity never uncovered.
DON'T GO TO SLEEP examines this time period from the viewpoint of a child survivor, orphaned, who later determines to uncover the truth and enlists her childhood companion to assist. The audio version really vivified the narrative, making it seem to be in real time, not dry History.
Firstly, I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with this eArc!
I had very high hopes for this, I love mystery books- and this being inspired by a real unsolved mystery had me intrigued. Unfortunately I felt it fell a bit flat due to the characters- and quite a bit of "telling and not showing". It may be due to how many YA/NA mystery novels I have read. This is by no means a bad book-not at all- just not a 5 stars for me :( if you perhaps haven't read as many books in this genre then you might love this!
If you like these books: The diviners, The City Beautiful and The Perfect Place to Die, then you might enjoy this novel!!
I requested this one because it might be an upcoming title I would like to review on my Youtube Channel. However, after reading the first several chapters I have determined that this book does not suit my tastes. So I decided to DNF this one.
