This is a creatively concocted, suspenseful family drama much like this author's successful novel, Defending Jacob; with twists and turns and designs that I didn't see coming and an ending that readers will either love or hate. It is fast paced, with a long title that I could never seem to remember when someone asked what I was reading.
A mother of three goes missing and suspicion immediately falls on her husband. The family is torn apart by grief while also dealing with questions of trust. The same tragic event and its aftermath affects each family member differently and alliances are formed over many years. The resolution of the mystery is somewhat shocking, and I immediately wanted to discuss it with someone else who had read it. This just might be one of the very few books that I am going to read over again very soon.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine for giving me the opportunity to read a digital ARC of this book. Publication date: March 7, 2023.
OMG! What an incredible read! Mr. Landay is an amazing writer. I could not stop reading this book. It pulled me in from the very first sentence. I loved his previous novel, Defending Jacob, & recommended it to everyone I knew. I will be doing the same with this book.
A missing woman, a family turned inside out with unanswered questions, grief and suspicion for decades. I have not read a book this absorbing & well written in years.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author William Landay & the publisher Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Bantam for granting my request to read this truly excellent & unforgettable book.
This was a fairly compelling family melodrama. A woman goes missing, the father is suspected of murder but without evidence the case goes nowhere. Years later, the adult children have their suspicions. The children were interesting characters, but the others seemed less substantive. Overall, it felt a bit manipulative.
I loved Defending Jacob and was excited to see William Landay’s new book. This family drama did not let me down.
This suspenseful story revolves around a mother of three who has disappeared without a trace. Landay’s writing is nothing short of stunning as he intertwines his characters, questioning loyalty and uncertainty along with investigative and legal perspectives. Once I hit ‘Book 2’, the story went into high gear, twisting and turning along the way. Perfection!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I requested this book both because of the title and because of the author. I remember Defending Jacob was a book that stayed with me a long time. This book will as well.
All That is Mine I Carry With Me tells the story of a family whose mother goes missing years ago. The siblings Miranda and Jeff both tell their parts, wondering if their father - the main suspect, murdered their mother. How did this man raise them but also do such a thing?
The story is crafted in such a way that all the threads in the beginning, the voice of an author looking for a story, having a beer with his friend Jeff, is woven into this decades long tale of a missing woman, who's bones are discovered twenty years after she's gone missing... but there's still no evidence.
I held my breath for so much of this book. There were so many twists and heartbreaking moments. The characters have stayed with me even now, weeks after reading it. I can't wait for others to experience this story. I cannot recommend it enough.
I loved that this book was written from different characters points of view and the character development was good, overall it just fell short for me and I struggled to become immersed in it.
Easily one of my top reads this year. While the narration and editing is a little choppy, I respect this is an ARC and I’m hoping those things will be fixed before publication. We start off meeting Miranda as an adult and her childhood friend Phil as Miranda is convincing Phil to write a novel about her mothers disappearance. Book 1 is told from Phil’s perspective on how the outsiders viewed the disappearance of Jane Larkin in November of 1975, MA. Book 2 then switches to Jane’s perspective and I was blown away by the way it’s told and the weight this section holds over the rest of the story. I’m hooked from this point on! Book 3 is then told in a court room drama format from Jeff’s perspective and Book 4 is told from Dan Larkin’s perspective as he deteriorates due to Alzheimer’s. Spanning over 40 years we see how a tragedy can destroy a family in the blink of an eye. I’ve never read a novel that is written quite like this one, it was very interesting and even though it was a slow burn it kept me engaged from the first page.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced E-reader copy of this book.
This is one of the best books I have had the great opportunity to read in quite some time. This author has created something amazing. I loved the character development and the way the book was divided into separate books told from different perspectives. I could feel the different aspects of the stories and the feelings were captured in such a raw and intriguing way. The ending was even perfection. I will definitely be reading more from this author very soon. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley. I cannot recommend this one enough.
Miranda, Jeff, and Alex are just children when their mother Jane goes missing. The case quickly goes cold when Jane is nowhere to be found and no clues are left. She is presumed dead, and most people believe that her lawyer husband, Dan, is responsible. This impacts all three children and their life is irrevocably altered, particularly when it comes to their relationship with Dan. Told in four parts, with four different narrators, the reader is a offered a unique perspective from each narrator telling the story.
This book is jaw dropping, heartfelt, and incredibly well written. This book is from the author of Defending Jacob, and utilizes a different style of storytelling with similar thought provoking impact. The author builds suspense through court cases as well as storytelling with different narrator perspectives. The ending will leave you thinking about the book long after finishing it. I absolutely loved the final three parts of the book, and the ending was so powerful. I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys family drama, domestic suspense, and murder cold cases.
Thank you so much to William Landay, Random House Ballantine Publishing, and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Ballantine and Netgalley for the ARC of William Landay’s All That Is Mine I Carry With Me.
I was very excited to have received an email saying that my wish to read this book was granted. I had read Defending Jacob years ago and was looking forward to reading this one. And what a book it was. It was one of those that I didn’t want to put down and when I had to, I couldn’t wait to pick it up again.
A mother goes missing. A family falls apart. Her young children are left wondering what happened to her. No sign of foul play but also no sign of her just leaving her family. It definitely makes for a great story.
I loved this mind-bending mystery with several POV chapters. Miranda Larkin is the youngest of three children in a home where Dan Larkin rules. Dan is a well-known lawyer who is always dressed to perfection in expensive suits, knows everyone in town, wins all his cases, and bullies his wife around. Jane disappears one day, and her sweet Miranda must learn to live without her beloved mother. It is a skillfully written story that could happen to any family. I wanted to get the answers and compulsively read this new novel.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of the book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book "All That Is Mine I Carry With Me" and all opinions expressed are my own. I have not read "Defending Jacob" that everyone is talking about. This was a slow burn for me and I really didn't have anything invested in the characters. Sounded like a good book but just wasn't for me.
I received an ARC of All That Is Mine I Carry With Me by William Landay in exchange for my honest review.
Wow! This book was riveting, I simply could not put it down. The characters were well developed and I felt like I was right there with them. The ending was one that I didn't see coming and it blew me away. I literally read the last chapter twice to experience it again. This is absolutely a must read!
Miranda Larkin is ten years old and lives with her mother Jane, father, Dan and two brothers, Alex and Jeff. One day Miranda comes home from school and the house is empty, her moms purse is there, and nothing is out of place so everyone thinks she is just somewhere in the neighborhood. When Jane doesn't come home, an investigation starts. Many think her husband, a criminal defense attorney, had something to do with her disappearance, but no evidence is ever found that would implicate him. After time, the case goes cold and life goes on. Then, two decades later, Jane's remains are discovered and the case is reopened. The Larkin children are adults now and they must decide if they will stand with their father or against him. What if they choose wrongly? The family will discover things about each other, secrets, hopes and dreams, truths and lies told. What really happened to Jane Larkin?
I am torn on how I should rate this book. I loved Defending Jacob. And have waited a long time for another book by this author. I was thrilled to receive an advanced copy and started it right away. Thank you to NetGalley!
The chapters were so long - it was hard to find a breaking point. It was such a sad story about a family in turmoil. However, I was intrigued and wanted answers!
I did end up liking this book ( and the ending!!), but just not as much as the first one.
Thank you again for the advanced copy!
WOWZA
What a book! Just when you think you had it figured out, another twist in the story! Kept me up late finishing it and what a ride!
William Landay’s long-awaited novel is a roller coaster of a book. In 1975 housewife and mother of three Jane Larkin disappears. Foul play is suspected with Jane’s husband Dan Larkin, a criminal defense attorney, the only suspect. Jane is not found and the case stalls.
The book explores the ongoing legal developments and the effect of Jane’s disappearance on her family members, especially her three children. The eldest, Alex, seems relatively unaffected, but the younger two struggle with their mother’s loss and their suspicion that their father was involved.
I read this book in one sitting. There are four parts, each told from a different point of view. The voices are distinct and moving. The book spans the time from Jane’s disappearance to the present day. It is difficult to give a detailed review without giving away the plot. Suffice it to say, there are several surprises during the book, none of which I anticipated..
My only dislike was the abrupt ending of the book. I kept trying to turn the pages, not able to believe the book had ended.. Still, if you read carefully, all the questions regarding Jane’s disappearance were answered except one (you’ll have to read it to find out!) This novel should spur significant reader discussion and debate.
Thank you to Bantam Books and NetGalley for an advance copy of this title.
Eek!!!! So excited to read this one. I loved the author’s other book Defending Jacob (the book NOT the tv show). I sat down to read this and finished it the same day. Such an engrossing read!
All That Is Mine I Carry with Me is a family drama set against a legal thriller backdrop. When Jane Larkin vanishes, her children grow up with the constant drive to discover the truth.
This is an absorbing, character driven mystery that delves not only into the crime committed, but the effects of the crime on the family and friends of the victim. The book is narrated by various characters, including the mother. As the story unfolds over decades, I realized that the victim of the crime was not the only victim. All of those close to the victim were also victims, and the book vividly describes how the lives of each of them was altered by one devastating act of violence. It is a page turning, thought provoking psychological thriller that kept me guessing throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Thanks to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for my advanced copy.
Oh man, oh man, oh man, OH MAN!!! I was screaming from the hilltops when I received this ARC, as I have waited 10 years for something else from William Landay after first reading Defending Jacob. While not quite as riveting, that one was hard to beat, it is a quite worthy 5-star read. The story begins a bit slow but picks up quickly like a snowball rolling down a hill. Bigger and bigger and faster and faster then BAM!!! Smacked in the face with a very fitting ending. The story is told in 4 books, each a different POV and that took a little getting used to but once I got into the story and theories were swirling around in my mind, I liked that too. This is not a feel-good story. There are so many victims here other than the obvious and there is no joy. I feel like I'm not really selling this one here, but I am just trying to avoid any spoilers. Definitely do not miss this one! And I do hope we do not wait 10 more years for another one!
Thank you to #NetGalley, William Landay and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
Oh my gosh, this book was amazing and I enjoyed every single second of it! Highly, highly recommend!
