Isabel Wilkerson is an award-winning and renowned author of books such as "The Warmth of Other Suns", which covers the topic of immigration. "Caste" is another important historical book, this time centering around the topic of social classes. Wilkerson defines a caste system as "an artificial construction, a fixed and embedded ranking of human value that sets the presumed supremacy of one group against the presumed inferiority of other groups on the basis of ancestry and often immutable traits, traits that would be neutral in the abstract but are ascribed life-and-death meaning in a hierarchy favoring the dominant caste whose forebears designed it." She spends time talking specifically about the caste systems in Nazi Germany, India, and the United States.

"Caste" is a very thorough, important, yet difficult read. This particular version is geared towards young adults, but I felt that it was still too high and lofty for that age group. I worry that they will get bogged down in the language and will not have the motivation to finish the book.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
