This is an incredible story about the underground resistance saving downed English airmen during the Holocaust. This story highlights the strong women during that period of time. There were many twists and turns along the way that I did not see coming. The character development was great. The fact that this is based on true events makes the story more meaningful. Thank you Net Galley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for an ARC of Code Name Sapphire. Pam Jenoff did it again...a must read!
Absolutely loved this story, its well paced, the three female characters each have unique voices and are very well developed. It's full of twists and turns and keeps readers clued to the page.. Set in Belgium and as usual the author has the skill to put you right there in the middle of the exact street feeling every emotion the character feels. Highly recommended. If anyone read Airey Neaves Comet line and loved it, you will love this book.
Will not share the following notes to social media.
But
Note to publishers, there are some editing issues which detract from Ms Jenoff's excellent writing and storytelling. It is fiction and the author made notes of where she used real events but changed details (time etc) to fit with the story. The characters also travel easily after curfew via motorbikes and trucks - petrol seems too easy to find but overlooked for the sake of the story.
No Issue with that but the editing mistakes include
1) There were no antibiotics available to anyone never mind Jewish doctors who couldn't practice medicine due to the Nazis. Although developed prior to the war, antibiotics were only available in the last year of the war, primarily via the Americans. Nik would have had access to Sulphonamides.
2) The airman in Paris was alive in the first part of the book and then dead in the second half, then alive again
3) The ankle injury sustained by one of the main characters was forgotten about (she recovered overnight to walk fine in her new boots but was than hobbling in the next chapter.)
4) The British Embassy was closed due to Nazi occupation so couldn't have been a point of contact
5) Lily and Hannah's names were mixed up in places.
Jenoff is one my favorite authors, and this new book does not disappoint. Two Jewish cousins become entangled in the resistance during WWII, leading to devasting consequences. I really liked the character development, and the relationship between the two cousins.
I’ve read all of Pam Jenoff’s books and this one might be my favorite. It was intense, suspenseful, happy, sad…all wrapped up into one. As much as I read about this time period, I still can’t understand how this happened.
At the beginning of WW2, Hannah attempts to escape Europe and boards a ship bound for America. When the ship is turned away, she finds herself seeking out a cousin in Brussels. While still seeking a way to escape, Hannah finds herself helping the underground, specifically the Sapphire Line. Mateo and his sister Micheline lead this network and Hannah finds herself feeling a strong connection. However, Hannah makes a simple mistake that carries deep consequences for her cousin Lily's family and they are soon deported. The intensity builds from there as efforts increase to help and save more people.
Pam Jenoff does it again, another fact inspired story the grabbed me at page one. Micheline (code mane Sapphire) with the help of her brother Mateo worked to assist airmen in Nazi occupied Brussels to safety. With the arrival of Hannah from Germany we find there is history between Hannah’s cousin Lily and Mateo.
A fast moving story of escape, rescue, family and betrayal. Definitely recommend.
Thank you Net Galley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for an ARC of Code Name Sapphire by Pam Jenoff. Another amazing story by Jenoff! This story is based on the true story of a liberated train on its way to Auschwitz but the author created amazing characters to give it a back story. It is set in Belgium and tells about the brave people that ran resistance lines to get English airmen that were shot down back to England to fly again. I am constantly amazed how authors find new and unique ways to craft stories about the bravery and sacrifice of WW2. I loved the relationships that were created between the main characters of Micheline, Matteo (brother and sister), Hannah, and Lily (estranged cousins). I felt the characters drove this story and there were many twists that I did not see coming. If you are a fan of Pam Jenoff, historical fiction and special stories of WW2, this is the book for you and comes out 2/7/23.
Pam Jenoff is a favorite author of mine and she has done an extraordinary book that details the power of women during the desperate times of WWII. This is a remarkable story about an underground network to aid downed British airmen through France into a safer territory. She captures your heart and doesn’t let go as her characters evolve. A few love stories are entwined in this tale as the people fight for survival. There are a few surprises as she weaves this tale that will keep you engaged! A great history teacher as well as an author! #CodeNameSapphire #PamJenoff #NetGalley
Wow, I read this all in one sitting. It was unputdownable and I did not predict the ending at all! Edge of the seat suspense along with heart tugging emotions. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the sneak peek.
Jenoff outdoes herself yet again. Code Name Sapphire is a testimony to ordinary people in extraordinary times. Thus we learn of the Sapphire Line, a secret resistance group set in Belgium. Like all of Jenoff's books, Code Name Sapphire is a tour de force where you hold your breath to the end as the plot wildly takes you places you don't expect.
This book is perfect for book clubs.
Rush to read this book!
