Brandon Sanderson is a fine writer, and this lengthy excerpt (I wish I had known that before asking) whetted my appetite even more. In fact, I'm ready to re-read the original trilogy for clues as to what happens. The length of the dance since was published), there have been many changes in the land of Elendelle. Wax was a family man and politician, Malasi and Wayne were now partners, and society was changed by its dealings with the now-mighty South Continent.Wayne's narration from POV is still fun to laugh at , Sanderson does Akzo's job with the ever-changing voice of the character.
I'm sure there's more to this novel, but unfortunately this excerpt is coming to an end.
Thanks to the publisher and her Netgalley for giving me the chance to read a preview of this book.
#TheLostMetal #Netgalley was surprised that ARC only included his first 10 chapters for review. I find this difficult because it's a short segment. Now you know what the extended excerpt means. Yes, I already like the story, so I give it 5 stars. What if you don't like the end of this block of the Mistborn series?
With that caveat... let's get started.
Wax and Wayne is his one of my favorite character duos. They're funny on a whole new level. Hats off to you, Mr. Sanderson.
The prologue focuses on Wayne and I loved watching him and his interactions on this site.
I wonder if Wayne is the main character of this book, Wax or Detective Marasi. The explanation seemed to focus on Wax. So it's a mystery to be solved when we can read more.
I love how we are drawn into this world and the detective partnership between Malasi and Wayne as they struggle with their problems. Of course I laugh while cheering. It's also interesting to see how the characters use their metal talents. I love how you know how much you can handle in a chapter.
Yes - we are already established. Highly recommended for readers.

Brandon Sanderson is one of my favorite authors and i really really love to the cosmere. The lost metal is the last book of the second era of mistborn, and as far as I've read, is insane!!
Love Wayne e Wax and all the side characters, and get anticipated chapters has hyped me to read this book this year yet.
I loved this extended excerpt (first 10 chapters). The 6 year time jump is great. These chapters were exciting, I blew through them and didn't want to put it down. I love seeing how the characters have changed since we last saw them. I really liked seeing Marasi and Wayne team up! The stakes feel very high and I am excited to see what happens in the remainder of the book.
I received an ARC (of the first 10 chapters) in exchange for my honest opinion. My thanks goes to NetGalley and Tor Books for this opportunity.
Off the top, I have to say, I was surprised the ARC only included the first 10 chapters for review—I find this difficult because it's such a short segment. Now we know what an extended excerpt means. And yes, I'm giving it 5 stars because I love the story already—but how do I know how I'll feel by the end? What if I hate the ending of this block of the Mistborn series?
With that caveat...let's get into it.
Wax and Wayne are one of my favorite duo of characters. They're funny on an entire new level. I doff my cap to you, Mr. Sanderson.
The prologue focuses on Wayne, and I adored seeing him and his interactions on that page. It also deepens our understanding of him.
I'm going to be curious to find out if Wayne is the primary protagonist in this book or Wax or Detective Marasi. The description seemed to focus on Wax. So that's a mystery to solve once I get to read more.
I love how we're brought into this world and the detective partnership with Marasi and Wayne struggling through a problem. Of course, I'm cheering and laughing at the same time. The developments in how the characters are using their talents from metal is also interesting. I love how I'm both thrown into the world, reminded of past events, and given just how much I can handle on each page and chapter to see the world open before me. Masterfully done.
Yes—we already established, I would highly recommend this to readers. (But read the others first.)
After reading these first 10 chapters I am even more anxious for this book's release than I was before. It's been a while since I read book 6, so there's some details I didn't readily recall, but I felt like the early chapters of this book did a good job of reminding me what was going on in the plot without too much retreading of previously covered territory. I was quickly drawn into the plot and frustrated when I got to the end of chapter 10, and thus must wait until the full book releases to finish the story. Like many people, I prefer Era 1 over Era 2, but so far this looks to be a fun read!
The first ten chapters of The Lost Metal were absolutely amazing! It feels so good to be back in the Mistborn world. It seems like a lot happened in the six year time jump between The Bands of Mourning and The Lost Metal and things are starting to heat up so I cannot wait to get my hands on the novel November 15th.
I was disappointed in how short this entry was. It was still interesting and I look forward to the full novel.
Brandon Sanderson is an amazing writer and this extended excerpt (oh how I wish I'd noticed that before I requested it) whetted my appetite for more. In fact, it has me ready to re-read the original trilogy for clues on what is to come.
To the book itself:
There is a six year jump in time from the last book in the series (the dance length of time since the last book was published) and there have been many changes in the land of Elendel. Wax is a family man and politician, Marasi and Wayne are now partners, and society has changed with the trade with the now powerful southern continent. Narration from Wayne's POV is still laugh out loud funny, and Sanderson does an Akzo job with changing character voice consistently.
There is, I am sure, much more in store with this novel, but alas this excerpt ends soon.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advance excerpt of this book.

i should definitely have read this closer to the release date because i felt HURT when i realised i couldn't finish the entire book.
there's a six year time jump between the last book and this one, but it feels so natural. there are changes, of course, but the fundamentals of our main characters remain the same. it feels like being away for a while and coming home to find that your favourite chair is still by fire, and your favourite brand of tea is in the cupboard.
brandon sanderson's writing is still as (dare i say it) perfect as always. having recently reread the first three books in mistborn era two, it feels so bittersweet that this is coming to an end. i am now anxiously anticipating my pre-order arriving, and will be JUMPING on it the moment it arrives.
I love Brandon Sanderson and every new edition he adds to the Cosmere has me excited multiple years in advance. And, yet again, he does not disappoint.
This book adds so much to the lore of the Cosmere, and how Sanderson weaves both this isolated narrative and the narrative of the Cosmere is a feat of writing.
[More to come]
*I want to reserve this space to review, even though I’m going to miss the archive date. I was excited to get this ARC so I could listen to the previous books in the series and then read this book. However, the narrator is a no go for me so I’ve been slowly reading the previous books. I won’t catch up by the archive date as I have more time to listen than I do to read. But I will be back here to cut/paste my real review once I’m done. 🙏😊
Since this is only a chapter sampler, I will not post my full review anywhere until I've finished the book. I also decided to wait to read it until we were somewhat closer to the release date, so here I am.
As always, Sanderson delivered a flawless introduction. The more of Wayne's backstory I get, the more I want to protect him. I'd say the poor guy can't get a break, but we all know that meeting Wax helped Wayne turn his life around.
I knew there would be a time jump before I started the book. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it, but I'm interested to see more of the inner-workings of the politics in Elendel. I'm also glad to see Wax as a politician since he spent most of his life resisting that path.
I don't have much else to say at this point, but I know Sanderson will end Mistborn Era 2 with a bang. I'm already excited for Mistborn Era 3, which he plans to write after Stormlight 5 is complete.
Picking up 6 years after the final events of The Bands of Mourning, The Lost Metal reunites Wax, Wayne, Marasi, and Steris for one last crusade against the nefarious criminal cabal, The Set.
Things I loved:
+ The time jump! Sanderson was able to clear the deck and start this conclusion to era 2 exactly from the place of his choosing.
+ Marasi and Wayne have a fun dynamic that was set up in previous books and now is highlighted.
+ Wax and Steris married with a family! For that reason alone, I finished chapter 2 thinking the HEA had already happened and nothing about the rest of the book could go wrong for me.
+ Wax’s new career as a Senator. What a perfect choice! Wax has neither forsaken his roots, bringing the Roughs’ famous Lawman image to play but also channeling his passion for justice and advocating on a higher level accessible to him because of his aristocratic status which had previously only been seen by him as a discomfort.
+ The conflicts are complex. Any new challenges the crew faces are fresh, natural extensions of the Cosmere world, its actors, and the magical elements to which we’ve already been exposed. For example, the summary includes, “Harmony’s power is blocked in Bilming. . . .under the influence of another god: Trell, worshipped by the Set.” This situation brings a cross-section of political, cultural, religious and other dynamics into tension.
Note: I have only read through chapter 10 (the entirety of the extended excerpt I received) but will update my review upon a full reading after the release date. I cannot wait to see how this Mistborn era 2 ends.
Many thanks to Macmillan-Tor/Forge, Tor Books, and Netgalley for access to this eARC sampler, in exchange for an honest review!
Brandon Sanderson just simply writes awesome fantasy! If you're already familiar with Mistborn Era 1 and have caught up to date with Era 2 this book will not disappoint.
Even though this is still just a preview of what's to come it's already promising to have everything that makes Sandersons other books so great: believable characters, epic stakes, world building that is approachable for those uninitiated in his other series, but managing to deliever ever new information for his die-hard fans.
With "The Lost Metal" Mitsborn Era 2 will be approaching its grand finale. I am beyond excited and believe that Brandon will be able to finish this series just as he has the others: breathtakingly epic!
This was such a good teaser! I am very excited for the whole book to come out soon and this was a good little tease :)
Like the previous three before it. This is a masterpiece. I am about halfway done and cannot wait to finish it.
Wayne is as funny as ever. I cannot wait for the rest of the book to come out!
Wax, and Wayne and the gang, are back in this 4th installment in the alloy of law series. The book I’m personally the most excited about for the end of the year. Though this was just a short version of it, I'm pumped to finish it. If you have read any of Sanderson's books before, especially the Mistborn novels, I highly recommend checking this series out if you haven’t. Well worth the read. It has a historical investigative setting to it, like goofy detectives in a fantasy world. They are so funny and wholesome. I’m shaking with excitement to see where this story goes and how it ends.
As I was only granted access to a portion of this title, and as the prologue didn't exactly get me hooked and excited, I will wait for the general release to read this - likely doing so via Michael Kramer's narration. I am expecting to really enjoy this book, as I felt like Bands of Mourning was a big step up from Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self. Ultimately, I'm happy that Era 2 is wrapped up, as I want Brandon's focus to be on Stormlight Archive Book 5.
Huge fan of this series, and I can’t wait to read the whole thing! It was great to be back amongst familiar characters that I love. As with everything Sanderson writes, I eagerly await his next book
As this was just a sample, I can't give a thorough review, but I will say I'm very excited to read the rest of this book! I love the mistborn world, and I'm very excited to be able to dive back in! This sample gave me just enough to hold me over until I can read the full novel!
