I read the first 10 chapters of The Lost Metal from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I honestly went in with low expectations. I went back and read the first three books, and while I love Brandon Sanderson as a whole, I realized why I hadn't read the last book of the series.
That said, at least the first ten chapters of this were much more enjoyable. Maybe it was because while Wax is insufferably right all the time still, he fails at what he's doing, and he's not very good at what he's trying to do either. That is, trying to be a politician. It also means more time with Steris, who, against all odds, is my favorite character. It also had some hints of actually getting more real history about Wayne, who while he can be "quirky" sometimes his "genuine" moments, can also be irritating. But his need to steal and his love of heroes has always made him an interesting character to at least know more about.
So, despite the three books before this almost killing my interest in this fourth book and world, this long teaser has brought back my interest. It does hint at going right back to action, but maybe a little more thought has gone into the politics and backstory of it all after his other series.
We'll see in November.
As usual, Sanderson’s story telling is compelling and full of endearing, multi-dimensional characters. Cannot wait to read the rest of this one!
I love Wax and Wayne, in my opinion, their story is the better of the two Mistborn series. I love Wayne’s ridiculousness and this teaser did not disappoint. Really looking forward to getting my hands on the full novel!
5/5 stars.
I was torn about reading this preview or waiting for the full book to drop. But I'm glad I decided to sneak this preview. The prologue of Wayne's childhood is so impactful and explains a lot about who Wayne is at a person. I also found I got a lot out of even the Acknowledgements, hear how Brandon Sanderson wanted to use Era 1 as a foundation for religion in Era 2 right from the conceptual idea of the series is interesting.
Safe to say I can't wait for the full conclusion to Mistborn Era 2.
I won't be posting a review of the preview but I'll be posting a full Era 2 review when I finish off the Lost Metal.
As all fans of Sanderson's Mistborn series, I eagerly await the latest Wax and Wayne novel. I had a little trouble with the download. Unwittingly, I began reading at chapter 3. Wow. Just goes to show you how important a good storyteller (and editor) can be. The book, as started in the proper place is a promising beginning to the final (?) book in this series, Solid writing, winning characters, and I cannot wait to grab the entire book.
Let's go Sanderson.
How am I supposed to wait for the publication now?
This was a really bad idea, but I don't regret it for a second. It's everything I expected and more, with just the right level of tension to keep you intrigued for the rest of the book. What do I do now?
The excerpt of The Lost Metal is a tempting glimpse into the latest Mistborn story. The action starts fast after an amusing prologue/ flashback and flits between wild west reminiscent policing and politics. Characters interesting.
This is the most exciting opening to an Era 2 book yet! I love that it's wasting no time getting into the plot, especially with the six year gap between Bands of Mourning and this book. It feels so good to be back with these characters, it feels like reuniting with old friends and they've never been better. The action is top tier, and the ever evolving uses for the magic system. I can't wait for the rest of the book, I have very high hopes for the end of this series!
It is what we know and love from the Mistborn series: a YA novel with deep themes and imagery that is easy and enjoyable to read. The characters are beyond colorful and live on in your mind; Sanderson keeps letting them grow here as we see Wayne as a child and Wax with children of his own. There are surprises, including a 5 year time skip and a Hoid spotting (for those deep into the Cosmere), but the plot remains consistently action-packed and thought-provoking with some of the most involved worldbuilding I've ever seen. As a fantasy Western where the heroes are lawkeepers, this era of Mistborn could easily become formulaic, but Sanderson prevents this by having each case change the novel's characters and its complex, ever-interacting world. I cannot wait to read the rest of the book when it comes out in November, especially because Steris, obsessive list-making woman of my dreams, remains my favorite Mistborn character of all time and Marasi, the staunchly proactive community-builder who wants to make change through paperwork, remains the Sanderson character I relate to the most.
5 / 5
I mean, what do you want me to say? Was it good? Yeah, it was good. Duh. It’s the 4th Wax & Wayne, isn’t it? How could it not be good?
Problem is, it’s only 10 chapters.
After reading it, do I want to read more? Heck yeah, I do. It very much pains me to have to wait til November to get my hands on it. I actually kinda hope I can completely forget about it before then, otherwise the wait may well be interminable.
Stupid Brandon Sanderson.
The Lost Metal picks up the story from Bands of Mourning after a period of six years. The world has changed, but Wayne is still Wayne. What else do you need to know?
I am so excited for this book! Brandon Sanderson never disappoints and I've never met a book of his I didn't absolutely love and want to share with the world immediately.
How do I rate an excerpt? It sure made me even more excited for the release of the book. I am marking the date down in my calendar: shenanigans from Wayne, Wax shedding more and more of his rough exterior with Steris and their children, Marasi being a total bad-ass. Yay for the gang going on adventure.
I was given an extended excerpt of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have been waiting to read this since 2016. Wax and Wayne are my favourite part of the cosmere and this little taste of what comes next was everything. The excitement levels were already off the charts but the first ten chapters were incredible. This book already promises to be a classic Sanderson treat. November cannot get here fast enough.
I received an ARC of the first few chapters as a reviewer for NetGalley. This book picks up after "Bands of Mourning". We finally get to see a bit of Wayne's past at the beginning.
Marasi, Wayne, Wax, and Steris all work in different ways to figure out what the Set, the mysterious Trell, and Harmony are trying to do as the world order unravels around them!
So far the book lives up to its predecessors, so if you are a fan of the previous books you will love this!
While having only read the first part of the novel, it is setting itself up for a wild adventure where the group tries to stop two wars while also potentially hunting down a god? Whatever direction the rest of the novel takes I will be along for the ride.
Thanks for this extended excerpt.
I already know I'd like this book, being a fan of Sanderson and having read the prologue and the first two chapters. But ohhhh.. I can't wait to get my hands on the actual book. I love how much the world and the characters have developed since the last time we've seen them and this story has all the ingredients for an exciting adventure waiting after the first 10 chapters.
Also, as more of a Cosmere fan, I am excited to see more Cosemere tie-ins in this story! Oh the long wait begins.
Lord have mercy I am not ready for where this novel is going. Although I am intrigued to see what happens to the Mistborn world after this novel is finished... I'm not ready for the fate of our characters.
Brandon Sanderson never disappoints! Loved the excerpt, but now I have to (patiently) wait for the full book to release. ;)
A much anticipated continuation to an excellent series. Looking forward to the full book release. The excerpt is written in the highest quality one would expect from Sanderson, and it was a fun romp reading about Wayne as a child.
Very excited to get the rest of this book, this excerpt was fantastic. Wayne and Marasi’s dynamic was great in previous books and I’m happy to be getting more of them here. Very much hoping for an ending that lives up to era 1, it’s been a great ride so far.
