What a terrific book for little ones!!! Easy to follow to instructions and great activity ideas. I think this would be great for teachers too.
What a fantastic book, rich with projects and activities to help your children or students find creative ways to express their thoughts and feelings. Each activity is explained with clear, step-by-step instructions. Nothing is too complicated, no great artistic skills are required, and yet all the activities feel engaging. I highly recommend this book to anyone who does art with kids.
I have a video chat relationship only with my twin granddaughters, who are 6 and live in Australia, and this book gave me great ideas for having a conversation with them, which is often hard for them. We played one of the games in the book, which was two truths and a lie for kids, but there are plenty of others that I know I will have fun doing with them in the future. Great book for educators, parents and grandparents.
I'm a special education teacher who focuses a lot on social-emotional goals for my students. Having these activities in one place like this is fantastic! I particularly like the Mindful Mountains, Scribbling Feelings, Armored Animals, Apology Paths... there are so many great ideas, and ones that are easily transferable to the classroom (whether with the whole group, small groups, or individually with students). I enjoyed the Discussion Questions listed after most of the activities, as a way to expand upon the activity itself and make it more therapeutic. I do wish there were more illustrations - there were for several of the activities, but not all - but that's a tiny thing that I can forget about when considering how helpful the activities in this book are already proving to be in my classroom!
What an amazing resource! This book is choc a block full of fantastic activities to use when using art therapy as a tool to assist children. Split into 5 categories, dancing and music making, acting and storytelling, cutting and pasting, building and sculpting and drawing and painting, there is something for everyone to be able to use. Definitely one that I'll buy to assist with my trade. Thank you to the author and Netgalley for providing me with a temporary copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
Great addition to any classroom. I have been looking for art therapy activities for a very long time and this book is such a welcome surprise.
Art Therapy Activities for Kids by Erica Curtis is filled with 75 evidence based art projects to improve behavior, build social skills, and boost emotional resilience. As an educator, I love finding supplementary resources to boost my student's learning and improve the balance of instruction in my classroom. As a mother, I sometimes need something unique to motivate my young children. This week I put this book to use and everyone was invested. They loved Imoji Mashup and De-Stress Dance-Off. I made a few notes because I want to try a few other activities immediately with my children like Apology Paths and Bandaid Buddies. I'm selective in the materials I purchase but this is a great resource I'm looking forward to invest in. I found this book on #NetGalley
This fabulous resource is perfect for parents, caregivers, teachers, resource specialists or therapists wanting to experiment with using art therapy lessons with a child they are working with. There are five sections, drawing & painting, building & sculpting, cutting & pasting, dancing & music making and acting &storytelling, each with about 15 activities within. Each activity has a name, the required time and materials, the steps and tips or other important information. The information can explain why you might choose this task and what the child might be working on from a therapy point of view during the task. I think this is an excellent resource and could definitely see myself using these activities in my classroom, in small groups or one on one sessions with a specific student in need. I also think it would work well in other settings such as a therapist’s office, a resource classroom or at home. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!
What an amazing resource! This book features multiple art therapy activities for children. Each of these activities can be modified for children of different ages, backgrounds, learning needs, etc. I loved that each activity was written in a clear, concise manner. Some included extensions to real life scenarios, emotional conversations (guiding questions) and reflections. I kept thinking while I was reading how helpful this would be to both parents, educators or anyone working with children. The activities are interesting, engaging and don't require too much time or materials (these are both written with the activity). I love how each activity explains the "therapy" aspect of how this contributes to helping support the child. Art is such a valuable tool for children and this book demonstrated that wonderfully. I think everyone should have a copy as there are so many great ideas!
A great guide of art activities for all ages and emotions. This guide is perfect for anyone working with children, parents included.
I *love* this, as a parent of kids in the exact age range this book is for. My kids are sometimes high-needs, with conflict and emotions revved up (thank you, pandemic) and it's hard to un-stick them. But art is easy, and for one of my kids, something they absolutely love. I very much appreciate all of the ideas here -- they're easy, fast, don't require a lot of quick thinking on the part of myself as a parent, and best of all, they don't seem like a 'Mom Is Trying To Make Us Talk About Our Feelings' formality that kids automatically despise.
I'm going to buy a copy of this and it will absolutely get used. I can see it being beneficial for teachers, and for other people who work with kids (my youngest Girl Guide group might be using this too!).
