A great concept, fun characters that offer a twist on classic monsters, and giving enough to still leave me wanting more. Quick paced, bloody, and with just the right amount of horny - very much enjoyed it!
I really wanted to like this book and though I was pulled in fast it started losing my attention just as quick. The characters are phenomenal in their creation but the overall writing seemed a bit scattered. I found myself re-reading a lot because I'd get confused as to where the characters were at given times and if we were in their past or the present time.
There were elements of the book that were greatly thought put and some that seemed rushed.
I didn't finish the entire book, it just didn't hold my attention and I couldn't focus on the writing.
This book is a fun and quick read for readers who enjoy a plot-driven story. This story follows Roxanne while she resurrects her friends Mx Hyde and Medusa and follows the Monster Three as they discover the consequences of the resurrection.
The book is a quick read and very plot-driven. It you like these traits in a book, I recommend this one!
I didn’t finish reading this book, which rarely happens but I did up DNFing it. I couldn’t get into the writing or the story line.
This book confuses me because I love the concept and what this book is generally about, but I find the execution not satisfying for my taste. I enjoy the humor and the friendship dynamics between Roxanne, Mx. Hyde, and Medusa a lot. But, I just can't ignore the fact that the writing style bothered me all throughout the entire reading experience because it has a different flair than what I usually read. It's not too flowery, but it's also not direct to the point. I don't know what word best describes the writing in this book, but it is definitely confusing to me. Sometimes I get what the characters are saying; sometimes, I'm just confused.
I was immediately pulled to this book because of its fantastic cover. It's vibrant, it's unique, it's enticing, and beckons you to open it to fall into this novella.
Once in, you will find yourself dropped into the center of a story that continuously feels like you're missing pieces of context. I kept almost finding myself enveloped in the story only to be pulled back out by having to go back and check if I missed a turn somewhere. It is on the cusp of deliciously fun but left me wanting in a put-off sort of way instead of a "gimme more!" way. That being said, should a full-length novel come out with Roxanne and The Librarian as the main characters, I will be first in line to gobble it up.
It is a quick read, with gore for the horror fans and hints of world building for mythology/fantasy fans. I did not personally get any fun campy vibes from it, but maybe others will!
I know many will adore the very tropey Mx Hyde character that was written to be literally half-masc, half-femme in the most on-the-nose non-binary stereotype I've ever seen. I, a genderqueer person, rolled my eyes so hard into my head I was sure I was going to choke on them. HOWEVER, I am sure I am in the minority here, as I can see many will probably enjoy the fresh take on Jekyll & Hyde and I prefer mediocre representation in lieu of none at all.
This is rounded up from 3.75 out of 5 stars.
A fun, quick read. It was a perfect blend of horror and humor. I think I read this because it sounded funny and I ended up loving all of the characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you, Underland, for allowing me to read Glorious Friends early!
What a fun and fierce reading experience this was! I enjoyed it deeply.
Rounded up from 3.75 stars.
This book was a madcap mix-up of all the most fun aspects of monster horror. Gore too weird to be uncomfortable or realistic, monsters eating hearts, traps and bargains, shameless horniness, and truly wacky amount of rising from the dead. It got to the point almost too fast, a necessity for such a short book, but I would have liked some suspense. This monster mash-up novel was funny and gross and over much too soon, a real graveyard smash, one might even say.
OK, so I originally requested an arc of this book solely due to the super cool cover art. I mean it is AWESOME. It's the best cover art I've seen since Grady Hendrix's My Best Friend's Exorcism. I know, I know, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I can't help it! OK, now on to the book itself...
Talk about a blast from the past! This book is a trip to 80s horror nostalgia town. Roxanne, being the hot mess that she is, decides that it would be a really good idea to resurrect all of her dead BFFs. (Very normal stuff here, folks.) As you can imagine, it didn't go off without a hitch. Roxanne ends up face-to=face with a demon spawn from the Underworld who demands that she replaces them in his afterlife with 3 equally villainous entities or he’ll drag her down to hell himself. Ooof. Way to go, Roxy.
The book is very reminiscent of My Best Friend's Exorcism in that it has gore, TONS of 80s nostalgia, it's a tad bit sexy, it's FUNNY and there are touching moments that will pull on the heart strings of anyone who has lost a friend or has a friend that they can't imagine not having.
4.25/5 stars. This is my first experience with this author, but it won't be my last.
