What a precious little book about loss, love, family, and food. The little girl that's the main focus in this book, Dulce Ramos, is really missing her grandmother who recently passed away, and is remembering the small things her grandmother used to do that brought her comfort and joy, including the comfort food she made.

This brought back memories of my own relationship with my grandmother when I was a child, whom I was very close to and lost when I was a teenager, and the simple everyday things I've missed most about her, like her laugh, which I can still hear in my head whenever I think of her.

This book contains a beautiful message that reminds us to cherish our loved ones always, never take them for granted, and never forget them when they're no longer with us.

What a cute story about family and traditions. It is important to get recipes and family is a strong connection. I think many kids would be able to relate to the fideo recipe in this book.

"Abuela's Fideo", written and illustrated by Gabriela Tijerina, is a beautiful children's book about grief, and processing the loss of a loved one.

The story is about a little girl who misses her her favorite dish that her grandmother would make for her before passing away. While trying to make the dish herself, she realizes how much she misses her grandmother and is able to express her pain to her mother. The illustrations pair well with the story, and make the story so much more heart wrecking.

This is a great book for elementary school age children, that explores complicated feelings. Thank you to NetGalley and Del Alma Publications for the e-arc. All opinions are my own.

Oh my GOD. I absolutely ADORE this book! It's got so much love and heart to it! It's absolutely delightful! And I loved how this was a take on grief, but through that shared grief, a mother and daughter were able to come together and remember abuela through the food she loved to cook so much. I also really love when there's a recipe at the back! It really adds to it!

Abuela's Fideo is a lovely story with charming illustrations. I especially appreciated the inclusion of the fideo recipe in the back of the book, as well as the glossary! We'll be purchasing this book for our children's literature as soon as it's available!

I’m crying! This book gave me all the feels… I miss my abuela so much! There is no way this story is not a memoir of a little girl missing her grandma. There are aspects I can relate to on every level, and know this came from the authors heart.

It reminds me of the time I tried making carne guisada the first time when I moved out of the house. It just wasn’t the same, fast forward 20 years and I have it down packed and every time I make it, the smell brings her memory right back!

The Spanglish is another source of comfort as this is how our household spoke. It's an authentic story of love and grief of someone you cared a lot for and shared many meals with.

The love and attention to detail in the illustrations are perfect… I see you little yellow fideo box <3

Can't wait to read to my daughter!

Thank you NetGalley and Del Alma Publications for the ARC!!

A precious and compassionate story that touches on the grief of losing a loved one, and also how to heal that grief by sharing fond memories and stories remembered. I love learning about other cultures, especially their traditions and FOOD! (I'm a foodie, what can I say?)

We follow Dulce as she attempts to make the soup her grandmother (her Abuela) used to prepare before she passed away. Dulce realizes that she never asked how it was made and that the concoction she created is NOTHING like the fideo soup she so desperately craves.

What would any hangry and frustrated person do? Cry, yes we would cry too, Dulce!
Thankfully, Dulce's mom is there to save the day- while she also never learned from her mother how this dish was prepared, remembering the good times and laughter they had with Dulce's Abuela started to bring back little tid bits of the recipe that they had gathered throughout the years.
What started off as a hocus pocus mixture in a pot ended up becoming more and more like the yummy fideo soup the more the two girls reminisced.

I'm a sap, too....so I felt the emotions heartily as Dulce experienced them - from grief and sadness to happiness and contentment.
I was very happy to find the glossary in the back, AND THE RECIPE- yummmmo!! I can't wait to make this and share the sweet story of Dulce and her Abuela to friends and family.

Loved this touching story of a granddaughter who strives to remember her abuela through recreating her cooking. As a mom who wants to expose my children to a variety of cultures, this will be one of my go to books to show a Latina family and open conversations about their culture and history.

The illustrations are gorgeous, and I loved the message that food can be a way to express love in a family.

Not only is Abuela's Fideo a developmental bibliotherapy tool to help children process grief, it is also a road map for children and the parents who are supporting them to learn how to reconnect to the memories of loved ones who have passed on. In Abuela's Fideo by Gabriela Tijerina we journey along with Dulce on a rainy day where she misses Abuela the most and longs for the special soup she makes on days like this. Dulce recalls her memories of watching Abuela in the kitchen and makes an attempt to recreate the recipe on her own. When she fails, she is devastated and plunges deeply into her grief. Then a beautiful thing happens when her Mami enters the kitchen and starts to share her own memories of Abuela. Both mother and daughter bond over these special memories and as they do they recall visual images of Abuela making her fideo and are able to make the meal together. The book ends with Mami and Dulce enjoying the fideo they made and Dulce's realization that Abuela is a part of her and Mami and will forever be with them.

Thank you so much to the author and publisher for the E-arc copy of this beautiful, culturally relevant children's book!

What is dolce to do when she misses her Abuela? Well she wants to feel the love that was in her Abuela’s cooking, so she attempts to recreate fideo without a recipe. A sweet story of grief and deep love, the story made me a little teary-eyed.

Art style was reminiscent of Pixar shorts.

Recommend to those who have experienced loss. May be difficult for other children to relate, but that may also be a moment to help them understand.

Abuela's Fideo tells the story of a young girl, Dulce, who misses her grandmother who has recently passed away and attemps to recreate the delicious fideo she always used to make. When her first attempt is unsuccessful, Dulce works with her mother to remember all they can about how her grandmother created the dish. These memories, combined with their ultimately much more successful second attempt at fideo, helps them feel close to their departed family member. Tijerina's story is lifelike and genuine, though her cartoon-inspired art style doesn't quite seem to match the sincere and bittersweet tone of the story.

This was such a sweet read! I too remember cooking with my Ita in the kitchen while made tortillas and tortas de carne. It was so lovely to see that bonding experience being depicted in such a heartwarming way. Just like the grandmother in the story, mine is no longer with us, so it’s always wonderful to reminisce.

One of the things I missed most when my grandparents died was their cooking. Food and culture and memory are so important and intertwined. This book shows children just how that happens, making it understandable and relatable to them.
I really wanna try Fideo now!

This is too cute. A little girl is missing her grandmother who has passed, so she tries to make her homemade soup. We did this with Grandma Martha cookies in my family. Finally found a written out recipe like 4 years later. It's a simple story about dealing with grief in subtle ways and its the sweetest

Oof, this is gonna make a lot of grown-ups cry. Well done!

Dulce misses her abuela's cooking, but especially her fideo, her noodle soup. Abuela passed away recently, and Dulce wants a bit of her back, and so she tries to recreate the soup from memory. After one cooking disaster, Dulce's mother comes in and they reminisce on the fideo together, until, as a team, they go through their memories and make something that tastes like love.

The artwork is reminiscent of construction paper craft. Each color black has a bit of texture, si nothing seems truly flat. It's very curvy, very flowing. Big eyes, big heads, but the proportions don't go too far. It looks cute, cartoony. Little extra details, like stray hairs and and sprigs of herbs, add a nice bit of variety.

The book ends with a small glossary and a recipe for making your own fideo at home. And now I'm hungry!

The title of this book is what drew me to this book. It is a cute story about a little girl who misses her grandma. Spanish words are sprinkled throughout the story. It includes a recipe for families to try.
