I listened to an audiobook copy of RUN TIME, which really helped to differentiate between the characters, and get more into the story much easier than if I was trying to grasp who each character was if only reading the physical copy.
Run Time is a new high concept thriller when real life on set starts to somehow mirror the sinister events portrayed in the script, Adele fears the real horror lies off the page. Isolated and unsure who in the crew she can trust, is there anywhere left to run?
*many thanks to Blackstone for the gifted copy for review
I actually really struggled getting into this book via audio. I am not sure if it was the narrator or all the names/twisty plot that was hard to follow, but I did have a hard time getting into it! I will be on the hunt for a paper copy though and hopefully will have better luck!
All of Catherine Ryan Howard's books, which I have read and adored, are excellent, and this one is no exception. It's much better because the narrators are the same as in her prior books. A suspenseful tale about an aspiring actress filming a horror film based on a book, in which the book or the movie based on the book comes to life. Sadly, I finished it in just two days. eagerly awaiting the upcoming release!
*I received an advanced copy of the audiobook from NetGalley.
The format of this book took a minute to understand, but once I knew the layout of the book it was fine. If I were to do it again, I would have listened for 30 minutes and then started again. Once the layout of the book was established it was a very interesting addition to the story. The parallels that are drawn/created make for an interesting and more enticing thriller. This is not my normal genre of choice, but I would definitely consider reading another work from this author. It could also be good starter for this genre. Nothing in the realm of jump scares, but I couldn't read it at night. lol
The six narrators were all nice to listen to. I did run into a few hiccups with the pronunciation of words and just the diction itself as Catherine Ryan Howard is from Ireland. But nothing that affected the story or my ability to follow along.
I really loved the premise of Run Time, but oh man, I did not care for two of the narrators. It was honestly hard to get through the first two hours and I stopped listening. The male narrators felt over the top and extremely cheesy, like the audiobook version of Nicolas Cage. I found myself too annoyed to pay attention to the story. Adele's narrator was a good choice, her accent was delightful.
I am however giving a good review because I ended up picking up the print version and I enjoyed it. As a horror movie fan this was really fun to read the movie-in-a-movie format. It did suck me in and I really wanted to know what would happen next. Howard's take on the thriller was fresh and kept me interested.
Overall, the book was probably a four star read for me, but the audiobook was a two. I will read more from Catherine Ryan Howard.
3.5 star rating
This is the second book I’ve read by Catherine Ryan Howard and she’s now on my instant-buy authors list! The story took a little bit to pick up, but I’m glad I stuck with it. The audiobook made me feel completely immersed in the story and I was pretty on edge for a lot. I do wish the book had scarier vibes compared to being mysterious, but the ending was decent. I think this book would be great for those looking for a mystery thriller compared to horror.
Run Time is every horror movie come to life! It's also about a book about a movie based on a book, somewhat convoluted to get your head around!
It would have been so much fun to read this in an isolated cabin in the woods. I loved the setting--dark, rainy, isolated, and no cell service. The story was slow and suspenseful, so the atmosphere really carried the creepy feeling. I enjoyed the uniqueness of the movie set setting, especially a horror movie.
The story itself is interspersed with scenes from the movie script, and while I really enjoyed this multimedia way of telling the story, it was confusing at times. I listened to the audiobook of Run Time, and sometimes when I picked back up I wasn't sure whether the scene I was in the middle of was the plot or the script. I'm sure this would have been easier to keep straight in a physical copy!
Unfortunately, the ending fell a little flat for me. I can't say why, I just wanted a little more from it than we got.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I went to university to complete film studies, and so there is so much that really spoke to me about those who love the medium of cinema. The suspense was fantastic. The mood was perfect. It had me guessing until the very end. So many wonderful twists and turns. Fabulous commentary on film and set life that really resonated with me. A wonderful read, for film fans especially, but also for those who just love a great thriller.
Just on the audiobook performance, they were 10/10 and I can highly recommend consuming the book in this form.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this early1 This book is a trip. It's a good story, but at times I had to stop myself and figure out where we were. This is the story of a has been actress named Adele who gets the opportunity to be the lead on a new horror movie. The movie is about a couple who are on a getaway and she's reading a horror book that comes to life on their getaway. However, its also coming to life in Adele's life too to some extent. It was creepy at times, but a little redundant at times too. I also don't understand how it all went down. I mean I understand what they told us and the logistics, but could that actually happen? Meh. This is my first Catherine Ryan Howard and I liked a lot about it, but this one specifically was just a little too convoluted and unbelievable for me.
A solidly decent meta thriller, filled with the general twists and turns but a unique spin on them all!
With Meta-fiction becoming starting to gather a wilder appeal, it's great to see if spread into the Horror/Thriller genre.
Too, the cast of narrators in 5he audiobook (and where they were used) was phenominal and brought the story off the page!
Nice job, Howard. Keep going!
My thanks to NetGalley for the audio-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I have not read all of Catherine Ryan capital Howard books but those I have, i’ve quite liked. Learning that habit all run capital time, her newest one, is set during the making of a horror film made me immediately want to pick it up. Thank you Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley for my advanced listening copy.
Well I have a lot of mixed emotions on this one. I loved the premise but felt it got a bit bog down on the execution. By listening to it I couldn’t just flip back to better understand what part was being discussed, the book, the movie, or the current situation. I also Didn’t enjoy how much the main character waffled on what was happening. Well I could better understand towards the end of the story why, it didn’t do leave my frustration along the way.
I did appreciate the twist at the end and how it all came together. So this may not be my favorite CRH Book but I am glad I listen to it and will certainly pick up her next one when it comes out. Also this may be a book that is better read rather than listen to.
Thank you for this book in exchange for my honest review.
I always enjoy Catherine’s writing style, and this book was not much different. What I found pleasurable was the “story within a story,” as Catherine worked the script for the movie that the main character was starring in into the actual book. In addition, I loved the twists and turns — I never saw them coming! Catherine is the Master of Surprise! Something I would change was the length — this book sits at 386 pages but it could’ve been shorter.
Thank you to NetGalley + Blackstone Publishing for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
RUN TIME follows the making of a psychological horror movie set in a cottage deep in the forest. When Adele Rafferty is offered the lead actress position after the original actress dropped out at the last minute, she can’t quite believe her luck. Once on set, she quickly realizes that not all is as she expected… and she’s about to discover that the real horror exists outside of the script.
While the premise of this story was really enticing to me, I ultimately felt that the execution was just a bit too convoluted. We essentially have a book inside of a movie inside of a different movie inside of another book… it was hard to keep up with what story we were in. I think the concept of different layers of stories is actually really cool, and I appreciate the ambitiousness of such a plot. I listened to the audio, so maybe reading the physical book would have allowed me to follow along a bit better.
OK but really, WHY is this book over 500 pages?!
I listened to the audio for this book and the narration was really well done. The accents were a little thick so I couldn't listen particularly fast and this is a LONG book, but thank goodness the narration was good! Again, why is this book over 500 pages??
56 Days was one of my favorite reads last year, so I went into Howard's new novel with a lot of excitement and high expectations. The novel was fairly unique and while some parts were surprising, I never had a jaw dropping moment or any particular wow moment at the reveals.
There was definitely a lot of build up and suspense in this novel. I think had I read it, I would have been bogged down by the repetition, however, it worked well for the audio. I always love an unreliable narrator and this one was fun because I really couldn't decide if Adele was an unreliable narrator or not.
I probably would've enjoyed this book more if it had been about 200 pages shorter. There was so much fluff that was just totally unnecessary.
It was a good read but not one that will stick with me or that I'll be likely to recommend.
Thank you to Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley for the copy of this novel.
Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of Run Time by Catherine Ryan Howard. This novel did keep me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the back and forth between the present plot and the movie plot. While I enjoyed this book, the lead character was a bit annoying and I didn’t love the narration. Overall a good suspense novel I will recommend to patrons!
Total Blair Witch Project vibes!! Such a fun read and a take on the “crazy woman” trope that was actually done so well.
This was an enjoyable story. I liked the overall creepiness of not truly knowing what was going on. However, the book within the story did not add anything but confusion for me. I didn't liked being pulled out of the main story to hear what was going on in the fictional screenplay.
I have been obsessed with Catherine Ryan Howard since I read 56 Days, and I have stalked her social media for every drop of information on this book for months. Let me just say, it did NOT disappoint! Seriously, read this book!!!
This one had me thinking for sure. I liked the way the author chose to be cliche in just the right amount for it not to be overbearingly stereotypical. I was bored at a few of the more “suspenseful” scenes like the one where Adele was waiting for the crew to return and the one she runs into Daniel after finally deciding to make the break. Overall I liked the book, but the ending was a little scooby doo in my opinion.
Initially I thought Run Time was going to be a bit "meta" for me, but I quickly realized how wrong I was. I am a huge fan of the unreliable character trope, so upon introduction to Adele and her shady past, I was intrigued. Moreover, the amount of gaslighting that goes on in this book had me questioning what every character was saying. The circumstances that brought Adele to the set were a little bit too suspicious and convenient for me, but otherwise the story was well-paced and kept me guessing.
