Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC.

This book tackles some big topics but seemingly is not super heavy. And as a newer mom, some of it was hard for me to read. But that is my own struggles. I did appreciate a positive ending.

One of my favorite things about NetGalley is it has turned me on to books I would have never discovered on my own. The New Person by Loretta Nyhan is the perfect example of this!

Owen and Nora are a married couple who has struggled with infertility their entire marriage. With several failed pregnancies they discover that Nora is unable to carry a pregnancy to term. With news of this revelation, they began seeking alternative routes. Surrogacy becomes their last chance at having a biological child. Enter Roxy, a struggling single-mother going through a custody battle. In desperate need of quick cash to keep her family intact, Roxy becomes Owen and Nora’s surrogate. With their last viable embryo implanted in Roxy, will Nora and Owen finally become parents? Will the money Roxy earns carrying someone else’s child help her keep custody of her own?

The New Person is told from three different points of view: Roxy, Nora, and Owen’s. In formatting the book this way readers are able to see how the process is effecting each of them individually. I especially loved that Nayhan included Owen. Too often, the man’s experience is left out of the infertility journey.

As an unmarried, childless woman, I cannot pretend to understand the struggles found between the spine of this book. However, Loretta Nayhan does a phenomenal job shedding light on the following:

*The emotional impact pregnancy losses takes on a marriage.
*Mothers and father’s will do anything when it comes to having and keeping their children.
*The financial demands of having and raising children.
*The hope and heartache associated with infertility and surrogacy.
*Having to reimagine what a family and future looks like when plans don’t go your way.

This book was enlightening to say the least. I was captivated by how rooted in reality Nyhan’s writing is.
I highly recommend everyone picks up a copy.

Special thanks to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

Seems my book theme is "Grief" :( But anyway, this book is the grief around miscarriage's and the lengths a couple will go through to have a child of their own. It is told in multiple view points, both husband, wife and surrogate mother. Another book that is first for me by this author, the story unfolds perfectly and well developed characters. I felt a connection to all of them, but mostly to Roxy and the love she has for her son. It is a raw look into surrogacy and what that means not just the parents but the woman that is going to carry that baby for them. It is the first book on surrogacy with the POV of the surrogate that I have read.

Roxy is a single mother works days at dentist office she loves but to make it she also works as Doordasher at night. Her ex-husband has thriving business and successful influencer new wife and he wants full custody of their son Aero. She can't let that happen so to pay for her lawyer she decides to become a surrogate for Nora and Owen. Owen and Nora have been desperately trying to have a baby with one failure after another. When they meet Roxy they decide to try again. However, feelings, boundaries and common ground make for interesting partnership. Can two women from completely different backgrounds see each other for who they truly are and go past the surface. and see they are really not that different?

Thank you to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for a copy of this book for my honest review.

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

I didn't like this one. The characters were all so incredibly unlikable, every single one of them. I found myself rooting against every person in the book.

This was not the book I wanted it to be. And while I didn't have any problems with the writing I just didn't love the story and the way everything played out.

This is the first time I have read this author and I really enjoyed this story. Roxy is taking her son Aero to stay with his father,Gabe as this is the custody arrangements. He is married again and is well to do. He is all about money and Roxy is doing her best to give Aero all he needs. Gabe decides that he is going to take Roxy back to court to get full custody and she has to find a way to make enough money to at least keep the custody like it is. Roxy decides to become a surrogate. She gets hired by Nora and Owen and thus the journey begins.

If you're looking for a book that's a good read, not super heavy, and the author has done a great job, this is a great choice.

It takes some real talent to take a basic premise that has been done multiple times and then somehow still make it unique and make it stand out head an shoulders above the rest! I'll definitely be looking out for the authors backcatalouge and future releases!!

Roxy is 29, divorced and absolutely loves being a mum to her kid Aero. She works two jobs to provide and couldn’t be happier, until her ex-husband says he wants full residential custody of Aero which sends her spinning. Nora and Owen have been together since their late teens and have struggled with fertility issues, failed adoptions and miscarriages via surrogacy. They have one last embryo, and along ones Roxy.

This was a great book, which really went into the details of the struggles of each person (multiple POV) and was truly heartbreaking in some places. I felt like I knew every character really well and I liked them all! Their were some relationships that felt out of place to me (Nora and Livy) but everything and everyone had a purpose throughout the book.

The one thing for me is that the ending feels rushed, it went from medium paced to fast paced to get everything wrapped up.

I would recommend.

Loretta Nyhan has written a heartfelt story about what family really is and how it can look different for many.

Roxy a mother recently divorced, finds herself in a heart-wrenching position fighting her ex-husband for custody of their son. Roxy does not know who she is without her son.

Nora and Owen are a married couple who are desperate to have a baby and will do about anything to make their family a reality.

This is a thought-provoking story that is heart-wrenching at times and even brought a lump to my throat. This is a story about friendship, family, sacrifice, trust, honesty, infertility, and trust.

I will be anxiously looking for future releases from Nyhan.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. I'll be honest, I had kleenex on stand by just in case.
I however did not need it , but I was drawn into the characters lives and almost felt like I was reading about a friend. The book was touching and realistic with it's emotions.

Thank you to #NetGalley for an ARC of #TheNewPerson

From the first pages, I was hooked. This book covers motherhood, loss, grief, hope, love, trust, and so much more. Miscarriage is a prevalent theme and topic and while it is sensitive (this is your trigger warning) - it’s so important that we have stories that are true to life’s real heartache. This story is emotional and impactful but so needed.

Roxy is a hard-working, single mother who is confronted with the potential of losing her child to her ex’s new “perfect” family. A couple, Owen and Nora, are overcome with loss but still holding out hope for a child of their own. Roxy thinks surrogacy is the answer to her problems - a way to give back and help a couple make their dreams come true while helping her in her custody battle. But things don’t always go quite as we plan, do they?

I didn’t expect to binge-read this book, given the emotional topics, but I finished in a day. Roxy, Owen and Nora are all so relatable and human - the author did a beautiful job with their character development and while switching POV can be frustrating, it was a seamless experience in this book and critical to showing all the different experiences of the three main characters (yes, I do think all three are critical).

This story made me laugh and tear up. It broke my heart, but also gave me hope. Absolutely recommend!

This was pretty good, I’m not sure why but I expected more ups and downs. The whole book was just level, nothing too exciting happening or anything too interesting. I also got annoyed by the number of references to how bad fast food is for people.

Edit: After thinking more about this one, I gave it another star. I’ve been done with it for hours and the characters are still on my mind! They were so well written and I truly felt like I got to know them.

I liked this book. I am attracted to stories about families—all different kinds of family dynamics. Roxy needs more money to fight a custody battle with her ex who is married to a social influencer and they don’t have to worry about money. Nora and Owen want a baby, but they harbor secrets from each other.
Much of the novel is being real. Being real with each other and also with themselves. Most of the characters have to have those cathartic moments. I didn’t like Lizzy. She was using her stepson in her posts without permission and that’s exploitation. I also thought involving all the people in the surrogacy was odd and awkward.
It’s a good read about choices and making life work with what you’ve been given.

This book was told from multiple POVs including Nora, Roxy, and Owen. I was able to read this in one day in about two sittings. I had a hard time trying to get into the book as I started reading this book blind. I enjoyed reading everyone’s perspective on how they handled the miscarriage and I thought the author did a great job writing it. I thought the author did a great job writing this book.
