I walked into this book with a lot of assumptions about what I would read. It was far different than my expectations. One example- the almost intimate study of how Alzheimer’s (and the fear of being known to have it) can wreck generational trauma on a family. I will say that I feel the last quarter was a bit rushed, and I wish there were more allusions and hints about the killer earlier in the book. This remains a strong crime novel.
Quick read. Not very in depth. Writing was fine, but it kind of dragged for me. I would give this author another chance.
This was gifted by the publisher & Netgalley. Thank you for the early arc.
In this thriller, we are following Jess who is a true crime podcaster (love these POV’s) as she returns to her hometown to finish a cold case that her grandfather had spent years trying to solve. She is hoping that by rummaging through her grandfather’s notes and using a fresh set of eyes, she can finally solve this once and for all. But, she is not ready for the secrets and deceit that she will uncover in the process.
We are also following the original investigative timeline, told in dual POV. So you are understanding what Jess is uncovering later, but also what was discovered originally.
I really enjoyed my time with this, it has all of my favorite elements in a thriller. For some reason, I found it a little harder to connect with the story and I think that bumped down my overall enjoyment, but I did still have a fun time and I would recommend.
I wanted to enjoy this one but felt the overall mystery, plot and characters hard to relate to. I can totally see the potential here though, I might just not be the target audience.
Something Bad Wrong by Eryk Pruitt was just as exciting as I was hoping it would be!
True-crime podcaster Jess Keeler helps a disgraced reporter Dan Decker uncover the truth about the first investigation which her grandfather Deputy Big Jim Ballard tried so hard to put to bed.
Trying to solve the murders of two teens back in 1972 might be a little harder than they anticipated.
Fueled by corruption, egos, and a family secret the two come together to tell the truth about what happened so many years ago.
Told in dual timeline that covers both investigations, Eryk Pruitt told one amazing, interesting story here.
Of my favorites are podcast told stories an this one was so much fun.
The characters in this book are excellent. I loved the dual timeline.
The plot is so smooth, the character development is enticing and you connect and visualize the situations as if the images are right in your face on a tv screen.
A fast paced read that kept me guessing til the end.

Something Bad Wrong
A Thriller
by Eryk Pruitt
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, from Thomas & Mercer, and #NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to preview and review.
I found the book to be okay. More odd and confusing. I am sure, I was trying to overthink it. It just was not one I could get my head into.

Too many viewpoints confuse the story and plot,
Eryk Pruitt does his best to make a compelling mystery in Something Bad Wrong but the multiple viewpoints and lack of suspense caused this book to fall flat for me.
The story setup is good with a granddaughter trying to solve the final mystery that her police grandfather had tried to solve but Pruitt boggs the story down with multiple characters that cause the story to fracture and made me lose track of who was the important character and who I should be following. I felt that the strengths of the book were also the downfall with the concept setting up a fun mystery that never seemed to connect and made me want a better ending and twist than what was delivered.
Overall Something Bad Wrong was a story that could have been so much better but was never able to meet the expectations or strengths that were set by both myself and the plot itself.
Be prepared to see the past and future collide in this riveting story. A fast paced earlier that will absolutely leave you on the edge of your seat and keep you coming back for more.
Past and present collide to tell a spellbinding story and unravel a riveting mystery. Loved this book. So freaking good. Couldn't put it down.
Impossible to put down … read in under six hours. Fantastic read ... brilliantly written with an incredible story that is skilfully divided between 1972 and Now. Tense and unnerving with many twists and turns that lead to a climatic ending. Highly recommended read and worthy of five stars.
if you’re into podcast mysteries that have dual timelines and multiple povs, this one for you. i admit; i couldn’t really sit through this story but i feel that has more to do with me personally than the book. i would still recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick fall mystery!
thank you netgalley for allowing me to read this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
