this was not peter's best work. I got a little bored in the middle and the ending was not as satisfying as I would hope.
The Kind Worth Saving is the sequel to The Kind Worth Killing and the first Peter Swanson book I haven't adored. Admittedly, I have a terrible memory for books and remember VERY few of the details of The Kind Worth Killing. I think if I had gone back and read the first one, I would have experienced this book differently. This book mostly works as a standalone, but most of the character-building for Lily and Henry was done in the first book. Great pacing and an interesting story, but it fell a little flat for me.
I loved book one so I was beyond excited to see a book 2 was coming. I do wish I had reread the book or at least read a recap of book one before starting this one because I definitely forgot a lot from book one and felt myself a little lost at points. I know some people are saying its ok to read this as a stand alone, but I completely disagree. Not only do I think book 1 was better, I also think reading book would one would help you understand and enjoy this one more.
The multiple perspectives added to the story, I enjoyed the Kimball and Lily's story continued.
A fun, fast-paced, suspenseful, dark, read with a few twists. This author continues to write amazing books!
Thank you to William Morrow for my copy!
This was a great follow-up to The Kind Worth Killing. I didn't think we'd ever get to see Lily again, and it was satisfying to see that while she's still the same person underneath it all, she's changed her ways in order to exist in the world as a free woman.
The relationship between Henry and Lily was interesting, and the mystery at the heart of the book was revealed to us early on, and then we got to watch the characters figure it out themselves, which I find a much more rewarding experience. I love Peter Swanson novels, and I will always recommend them!
Unfortunately this was a miss for me. The Kind Worth Killing is one of my all time favorite thrillers and I giddily re-read it in anticipation of this book. This one felt disjointed and I didn't think it tied in that well. The two character's stories felt disjointed and it took forever to feel like anything was happening and connecting!
I am such a fan of Peter Swanson and his writing style. I felt like this one kept me on the edge the entire time and through me for a loop with the twists! I love how unpredictable this one was!
Henry Kimball changes careers like most people change socks. In this sequel to The Kind Worth Killing, the former teacher/police detective is now barely supporting himself as a private detective. Both of his previous jobs do come into play, however, when an ex-student hires him to follow her cheating spouse. This reunion with Joan causes Henry to recall his last day as a teacher, marked by a traumatic experience that drove him into police work. Although they have that horrible memory in common, the now-adult Joan barely resembles the girl Henry remembers. As Kimball doggedly pursues what should be a straightforward assignment, his discoveries draw him into a much darker and more complicated search. Swanson always delivers an elaborately layered plot filled with unexpected twists and cheeky references to classic mysteries. Here he also impressively juggles the novel’s many timelines and subplots without causing confusion or spoiling his nail-biting ending. The Kind Worth Saving continues Swanson’s examination of the banality of violence, vigilante justice, and righteous punishment. Fans of the series will be grateful for the return of Lily, with whom Henry enjoys an unconventional relationship. This fledgling series offers a trove of possibilities, leaving readers in suspense about what Henry Kimball might become embroiled in next.
Thanks to the author William Morrow and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me an advance reader copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Peter Swanson is one of my favorites! Ever since reading the KIND WORTH KILLING, I have been reading all his works before they are published and singing his praises!!! A venture back into some familiar characters piqued my curiosity as well! By expanding upon some of the characters in TKWK, Swanson does a great job of creating their own story and almost completely separating the two!
You can read this one without reading TKWK but a little back story into the devious nature of lily and what happens to Kimble in the first book might make you appreciate TKWS even more!
Already ready for the next Peter Swanson book!
Description
In this spectacularly devious novel by New York Times bestselling author Peter Swanson, a private eye starts to follow a possibly adulterous husband, but little does he know that the twisted trail will lead back to the woman who hired him
There was always something slightly dangerous about Joan. So, when she turns up at private investigator Henry Kimball’s office asking him to investigate her husband, he can’t help feeling ill at ease. Just the sight of her stirs up a chilling memory: He knew Joan in his previous life as a high school English teacher, when he was at the center of a tragedy.
Now Joan needs his help in proving that her husband is cheating. But what should be a simple case of infidelity becomes much more complicated when Kimball finds two bodies in an uninhabited suburban home with a FOR SALE sign out front. Suddenly it feels like the past is repeating itself, and Henry must go back to one of the worst days of his life to uncover the truth.
Is it possible that Joan knows something about that day, something she’s hidden all these years? Could there still be a killer out there, someone who believes they have gotten away with murder? Henry is determined to find out, enlisting help from his old nemesis Lily Kintner—but as he steps closer to the truth, a murderer is getting closer to him, and in this hair-raising game of cat and mouse only one of them will survive.
The was my first Peter Swanson novel and I was really excited to pick it up. I enjoyed the characters and the story was entertaining, but I didn’t really love how I felt like I knew exactly what was going to happen at the halfway point. I kind of checked out because the story was pretty much explained midway in. All in all it was entertaining but I don’t think it’s one that will stick out. Thank you netgalley for my free review copy.
I was wondering how Swanson was going to take THE KIND WORTH KILLING and make it into a sequel for this one. But I trusted the process. AND HOT DANG AM I GLAD I DID. This was incredible, the definition of a page-turner. Genuinely couldn't and didn't want to put it down for even a second. The way he weaved the past characters into this sequel while integrating new characters into the mix. Bravo, well done.
The Kind Worth Killing is one of my all time favorite reads. I was thrilled to hear there was a follow up with The Kind Worth Saving but also hesitant because I wasn’t sure it could stand up to TKWK. Glad to see I worried for naught. This sequel was incredible.
This pains me because I have long considered The Kind Worth Killing one of my all time favorite thrillers. Unfortunately I just don't think Swanson's writing is for me any longer.
I'm sure plenty of people will enjoy this and I think fans of his work will probably love this one. I am just not one of those fans anymore.
This follow-up to The Kind Worth Killing stands on its own really well, but it is also fun for fans of the first to see the interaction between Henry Kimball and Lily Kintner. The new characters introduce a twisted arrangement that involves several murders with Henry as the private investigator hired by a wife to follow her husband. I'd love to see another one in this series, but I'm happy to have the two that exist.
First of all thank you so much to William Morrow for the ARC of this highly anticipated thriller! The Kind Worth Killing is one of favorite thrillers and I re-read it in anticipation for this one! Swanson built a very intriguing story with very intriguing characters. I was very invested in the story pretty quickly and ended up enjoying this a lot more than his previous novel.
The Kind Worth Killing is my favorite Peter Swanson book, so needless to say I was nervous to see how the continuation of this series would go after really not loving the last two books of his I’ve read. But I’m happy to report that The Kind Worth Saving was a great addition to this series, and I loved get the same feeling I got when reading the first book.
I was just as entertained and sucked in with this one, and the classic Peter Swanson twists really came back to life and were executed well. If you read the first one and, like myself, need to know more of the story, definitely pick this one up!
Also a big thank you to Netgalley and William Morrow for my review copy!
If you are a fan of ambiguous endings this is a must read. Swanson’s characters are intriguing and the story diabolical.
Loved this book. Was everything I hoped for in the sequel. Loved the character development and where Swanson took the storyline.
This was such a fun and slick read...and much better than Swanson's past two books. He is back on his game here with a thrilling story, interesting characters, and a twisted backstory. For those who read The Kind Worth Killing and don't remember it (like myself), it helped me to read the premise again with spoilers to prepare myself for this one, since it features some of the same characters.
I would highly recommend this one. 4.5 stars.
Thank you to William Morrow for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Hmmm… The Kind Worth Saving was one hard book to review. On the one hand, I found myself thoroughly wrapped up from page one. But, on the other hand, it just didn’t quite live up to the epic proportions of its precursor, The Kind Worth Killing. Was it because the latter was simply out-of-this-world, or did the former lack that je ne sais quoi that I’ve found every Peter Swanson book to possess? I don’t know if I’ll be ever be 100% sure.
So what made me eat up the pages then? Well, for starters, it was quite the tangled web of sociopaths with nearly every character dark and disturbed. But it quickly became apparent that this cat-and-mouse game was going to turn out to be a battle to the death of only the most enterprising and quick-witted of the bunch. I don’t want to give too much away, but, if you love evil characters who work to set the world to rights, this is your book. Can’t say much more or an errant spoiler may slip in.
Next up, the twists… Be prepared for yet another of Swanson’s trademark revelations that utterly turns the whole story on its head. Is it as jaw dropping as the one from the aforementioned first book? No, not really. That’s not to say, however, that it didn’t bring a huge smile to my face. And be prepared to keep your seatbelt firmly fastened, because the surprises just keep coming. After all, if I had to give the author just one superpower, it would surely rest with his devilish ability to turn a story on its heels.
The only somewhat disappointing fact was that this didn’t exactly feel like a sequel to me. Yes, the same characters are present and accounted for, but there’s no significant character development from the first book. On top of that, in hindsight it felt much more like it was tying up loose ends. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll probably enjoy it just as much as I did. And to be frank, I probably would have been raving about it a tad bit more if I hadn’t just reread The Kind Worth Killing before picking this one up.
So, do I recommend this one? OMG, YES! It is complete with one of Swanson’s characteristic well-organized, riveting, shock-inducing plots all spun around multiple POVs with two tension riddled timelines. So despite the fact that this review may come off as being disappointed, I was anything but. My expectations were just unbelievably high. Rating of 4.5 stars.
Trigger warning: school shooting, mention of: cancer, assault
The Kind Worth Saving by Peter Swanson
My rating:
4/5
The Kind Worth Killing follows the story of private investigator Henry Kimball, who was hired by a woman named Joan who believed her husband was cheating on her and she wanted solid proof.
This was the sequel to The Kind Worth Killing which was AMAZING. I was definitely interested in where this story would go and a lot of the bones of this story were similar to the first book. There was a lot of similarities between the first story and this one, and lots of ties to the first book. I would absolutely read the Kind Worth Killing before you read this one, but it could be a stand-alone as most of the story was reexplained as there were some characters mentioned from the first book.
Overall this was a solid read and at about 50% I was so invested, but around 75%, I started to get a little bored. Everything did come together in the end, but I think it could have ended a little earlier.
Thank you netgalley for the ARC! You can read this one now as it was released in March!
