This is a story about a young boy (Tommy) starting a new chapter in his life while battling internal struggles, bullying at his new school, turmoil in his parent's marriage, and an obsession over a comic book universe.
While I believe that this book was definitely not meant for my age group (someone much younger may appreciate the fart - and other related humor - jokes) I can definitely appreciate the message that it displays. Tommy's journey through the story is something that many of us can understand and relate to on any number of levels (from the perseverance, struggle, and courage to stand up to those who wrong us).
A wonderful coming-of-age novel (with a little sci-fi magic) that many young readers will enjoy.
This was a mixed bag of coming of age, family drama, and a child’s fantasy with late 80’s nostalgia sprinkled in. I found myself skipping through several chapters just to get past the “what the F is going on” moments. The story of a family dealing with a divorce was pretty decent. But, it couldn’t save the book. I wanted to love it but I just couldn’t get there.
The family drama and Tommy having a hard time were great story lines. I understand that there needed to be a catalyst to drive the story forward, however, the full-blown hallucinations were unnecessary. Maybe the fight scenes and the in-depth imaginary friend conversations were supposed to be real,, which makes it even worse.
