I enjoyed this a lot! I had forgotten how cute the various character illustration styles are. I thought I might feel a little out of place, having last read some of the novels (instead of the comics), but that was not the case for this particular story. I'm struck by the ending. I'll be curious to see if the next volume picks up somewhere else entirely.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the authors for the ARC!
Oh I am so glad Fence is back! The novels just didn't seem to cut it. And also don't seem to be canon? They don't quite fit with what's happening in the comics. But they're fun additions!
I forgot how much I love the art style in these, with some manga/anime style mixed in. Nick and Senji are my favorites and I just want them to realize they might like each other. Reading this has made me want to go back and read the previous volumes again, so maybe I will do just that! They're great for something fun to read.
Outside of the art, I enjoyed the way this volume extended the story. We obviously get more fencing, but we get more backstory from some characters and the overall relationships are expanded upon. This is one of my favorite groups of characters to read about, and it looks like we'll be getting more in the future. If you have teens reading things like Haikyu!!, definitely give this as a read-a-like!
A beautifully drawn and plotted graphic novel that managed to inter splice strong thematic elements and keep up great entertainment value.
I really enjoy this series, and I'm glad it's continuing. I wasn't sure what reading the graphic novel would be like after reading both of the full text books, but honestly, I enjoyed it!
*deep sigh* Okay, so for anybody else who was wondering how C.S. Pacat was going to incorporate the character and relationship growth from the two Sarah Rees Brennan novelizations, the answer is... she's not going to. So that kind of sucked. Otherwise, this comic continues to be cute and very slow-paced in terms of the actual action, although Seiji and Nicholas are starting to maybe get blushy over each other. (I have to say that I think Johanna the Mad is probably discovering why manga artists have entire studios of assistants to draw things like backgrounds for them... the art is cute, especially the chibis, but not elaborate.) I do still enjoy Fence, don't get me wrong, but it's frustrating to wait literal years for an update that doesn't really go anywhere. If I wanted to read Haikyuu, I'd just read Haikyuu, you know?
Another good Fence edition. They really are so short though, I feel like it's going to go on forever and no real closer is ever going to happen unfortunately.
The team is invited to a fencing camp at a rival school to improve their skills. We learn more about Senji. Nicholas works hard to improve his skills.
I have been waiting for what feels like forever to get some kind of movement with Nicholas and Seiji's relationship. We didn't quite get that in this volume but we did get an almost acknowledgment that Seiji and Jesse were maybe something more than friends/fencing partners. Hopefully that actually leads up to something. I really need something to happen between Nicholas and Seiji already. Besides that the story felt really similar to one of the novel adaptations with the whole fencing camp thing. Overall still a good volume.
