I love K. O'neill's work and I've read every book they've released so far, so I was very excited to discover that they would be coming out with a new graphic novel.
The Moth Keeper is true to O'neill's style: it's wholesome with a focus on friendship, found family, nature, and learning how to do hard things. The illustrations were also the soft paint style that you see in all of their other works.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel and the morals of the story. I have already preordered the hardcover and I can't wait to sit down and reread it because the artwork in the early review copy seemed like it was unfinished, and I'm excited to see how it will look when it's done.
I definitely recommend this book, and not just to the target middle-grade audience. I love K's stories and I'm an adult, but I also look forward to reading them to my future children someday. They are always wholesome and inclusive, and The Moth Keeper was no different.
"The Moth Keeper' is a beautifully illustrated story that seeks to capture the essence of seeking help when you need it. It is gentle and warm and light, with a beautiful backdrop and moral tale included.
This story follows Anya, a moth keeper, and her journey as she spends so much time alone doing what she thinks is her only purpose. Throughout, we follow her as she grows slowly more tired and worn out from being relied on so heavily all of the time.
Burnout was so gorgeously captured here with a hope, for those like Anya who hold onto expectations, that things can change and be better as a community. Rather than carrying a burden alone.
This story was wonderful for what it was but it was very short and followed one linear storyline which I found a little lacklustre. Regardless, I enjoyed and hope everyone else does too!
I love everything that Kay O'Neill has created; Their illustration style is so beautiful and cozy. This story is about feeling unworthy and loneliness. I was able to empathize with the main character, Anya, and her struggles with finding her purpose in the world. Beautiful story, beautiful art - I definitely will be purchasing a finished copy.
What an outstanding graphic novel! I got lost in the world created by Katie O’Neill and after completing this novel… I wanted to go right back into that world.
The story tells of a society based on tradition and grounded in the balance of nature and the environment. The characters are sure to appeal to many and you are sure to find a character that you can understand their inner motivations.
The illustrations pull you into the story even further. I literally lost myself for a half a day living in this peaceful serene land.
The lessons were deep and multidimensional. I found so many places that I stopped to read sections over and over as they resonated so deeply.
I loved this graphic novel so much I ran out to get K. O’Neill’s other publications.
This graphic novel is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Grateful to have received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley & Random House Children's, Random House Graphic

While not as emotionally pulling as the Tea Dragon Society, The Moth Keeper was a sweet little graphic novel. I enjoyed the layers of backstory telling, while still leaving some things to wonder at. I suppose my biggest "issue" here is that there felt like a lot of filler pages, and I would have enjoyed more interactions between characters, or more understanding of the moths or the different villages. Regardless of that, it's a fun, quick read and I definitely would recommend it for my niece and nephews to read.
I have read the tea dragon books, so I was looking forward to reading this. The Moth Keeper is a wholesome comic with a focus on friendship, found family, nature, and learning how to do hard things. The art and illustration style has some similarities to the work of Charlse Vess.
I highly recommend this.
This was such a beautiful story. From the story itself to the art style. I loved everything about it!
I love K. O'Neil and all their work. The art style just brings me pure joy.
In this story, Anya is training to take over the duty as the moth keeper. She is in for a solitary life of duty and honor: alone in the desert night with just the moths as company. While she craves fulfillment in her role, she also dreads being alone with just her thoughts. She dreams of the sun and the village of the sun. One fateful day, she spends a day in the sun village and there are dire consequences. Can Anya rally all the lunar moths together to pollinate the flowers in time?
This is a middle grade approved graphic novel for my classroom! It was adorable.
What a beautiful story! I love Kay's work and The Moth Keeper feels very timely having gone through a global pandemic. The Moth Keeper is a graphic novel about a child who becomes the new moth keeper for her village. It's a big responsibility and requires a lot of time in solitude through the night. This is a story about burnout, loneliness, and the effects of parental neglect, all delivered with gorgeous art in a way that will be accessible even for young children. It's about the importance of community, about how love and friendship can be healing, and about how we don't have to shoulder everything ourselves. I found this to be incredibly moving and will be buying a copy when it's released. I received a digital advance copy for review via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.
This story was incredible to read! I adored Anya and her journey to discovering herself and what she wants out of life. "We live our lives surrounded by the darkness... I want to try and be a light for others." The art was absolutely beautiful and I'm obsessed with every page. The art style is unique, along with the character, and the landscapes were breathtaking,
I greatly enjoy this author's work! The Moth Keeper is a brilliant series that I will be recommending and sharing to my Children's Librarian and her staff.
Beautifully illustrated with a rich storyline
For Libraries: Suitable for youth graphic collections, but your middle grade and older readers will get more out of the story than your younger ones.
This is a charming graphic novel that explores how light and dark, day and night all intertwine.
Anya is a darling character and I adore the subtlety of the LGBTQ characters. All around a wonderful graphic that I'll be sure to recommend for purchase at our library.
I can always count on Kay O'Neill to deliver something beautiful, inclusive, and poignant. This one wasn't as strong as her Tea Dragon books, but i truly enjoyed it all the same.
Illustrations are gorgeous! Adorable story about burnout and needing community. Love this little world. Anya and Estell are such cuties!
I've truly enjoyed Kay O'Neill's work for a long time now, but I think this book, of all of theirs, hit me the most. It's a quiet, slow, introspective story, that is beautifully written and illustrated. If you need a reminder that everyone needs to rely on others from time to time or the beauty of community, read this book. If you're just looking for a lovely story with fantasy elements (I'm talking to all the cozy fantasy readers, here), read this book. If you've at all enjoyed Kay's previous work, read this book! I'm going to be recommending this one for a long, long time.
O'Neill has been on my radar since I've seen the cover for The Tea Dragon Society but I have never read their work. Their work seems like something I wished for as a kid and reading this book was like reliving my childhood.
The Moth Keeper was a magical read. The story flowed beautifully and it really touched my heart. The narrator is so super lovable and you never wanted it to end. It packs quite an emotional feel to it. It was super cute and one I can see a lot of kids and adults loving. The art was adorable and really stands out from the rest. The entire package was fantastic and memorable.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel! The art was beautiful and the story of burnout and sometimes needing a little extra help was very relatable!
Absolutely delightful! O'Neill has an amazingly creative way of storytelling that is made so much better by the gorgeous illustrations. So beautiful and unique and magical. A must buy author for sure.
I'll read anything by K. O'Neill at this point. There's something about her work that it just so warm and cozy, even when it's broaching serious topics that can be challenging to overcome in real life. The Moth Keeper keeps to that theme and tells a beautiful story about about accepting friendship and help in your life. Art work as always is A+
