I really enjoyed this collection! I didn't even know the sub-genre of speculative haiku even existed until I got this ARC, and I'm really pleased to discover how much beauty and emotional heft speculative haikus can contain! It's remarkable how much Sng can convey with so few words. The hints of humor occasionally peeking through the darker moments were welcome; after all, something can be terrifying and funny at the same time. The twists in her poems are insightful and often thought-provoking.
The collection is divided into sections which range from more realistic subjects (such as "The Enlightenment of Science") to the completely fantastical (such as "Childhood Tales"), and I really love this contrast. I also enjoy how Sng links together related poems to create a quasi-fragmented picture of a larger story such is in "Little Red in Haiku."
I read this collection just before reading her essay "The Art of Speculative Haiku" in Writing Poetry in the Dark, and I found the combination really inspiring to my own writing as a poet. I even wrote a few speculative haikus, which I've never done before!
Definitely recommend this to speculative fiction/poetry readers!
I was super excited about the idea of speculative poetry, but these poems just didn’t land with me. Many were haiku’s that just felt very obvious to me, like the fairytale haikus. There was no revelation from the fairytale poems, they just read like a synopses. There were a few longer poems I en opted, but overall the book was forgettable.

This book of poems/verse is very different than what I’ve ever read before!! It was sci-fi, horror, and thought provoking all in one. It was a quick read that is a good pallet cleanser to read in-between genres! My favorite ones from this book were: “The Joy of Traveling” and the collection titled “Childhood Tales”, specifically “The Wizard of Oz.” Definitely want to read her other books.
This is a first book that I review from NetGalley.
Its a short book full of free verse poems, that target fantasy and horror fans. The poems are really short and grouped together by the theme.
I generally don't read many poems but I gave this a shot since the cover art was amazing and the book was short. It took me less than 15 minutes to finish it. While I liked the theme and the wittiness in her writings, most of the poems seemed a bit too empty, felt like a jumble of randoms words. In the end I didn't feel like I rememebered anything from the book.
Even though it wasn't my cup of tea, I can imagine some people finding it quite enjoyable. Recommended for free verse poem enthusiastics.

Not gonna lie, the reason for me to pick this poetry collection up was the cover. Well.
Its modern poetry, that says what it wants to say without any playful prose or stylistic devices. There's nothing to explore beyond the obvious and therefor an extremely quick read. The poems are very short and designed like streams of consciousness, that's just not my preference at all and I disliked everything I read.
1,5 stars.
I loved this collection from beginning to end, my favourite part was the Disney poems section. It showed all sides of being a monster, those that exist in the real world and those that don't. I can definitely see why the author has won so many awards.
Also the cover art is stunning and needs to be appreciated
I enjoyed this collection. This is my first Sng read and I thought it was decent. I liked the movement of the poems and topics. The first half and second half do feel a bit disconnected but I thought separately they were solid. The sci-fi half actually made me feel a bit panicked since space stuff is terrifying to me (lol) and I loved that just a few short poems were able to have that effect on me.
I see from other reviews that people see it as "instagram poetry posts" in a negative way but I guess I like that style of poetry. It's a super quick read and I look forward to reading more from Christina.

The Gravity of Existence by Christina Sng.
Poems.
A collection of tiny terrors from Bram Stoker Award ® winner Christina Sng. The Gravity of Existence is a weight lifted, a monster freed, a princess with sneakers, a spell for a better world. From one of the leading voices in dark verse, this collection delights in the misunderstood, putting a new spin on werewolves, basilisks, sirens, ghosts, aliens, pandemics, fairy tales and myths. Sng gives new voice to classic heroines and the result is terrifying, magical, and fantastic.
Wow. A great book of poems. 4*.
My thanks to Interstellar Flight Press for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Gravity of Existence: Poems’ by Christina Sng.
This was a collection of tiny poems on various themes. I don’t often read poetry but these were both accessible and satisfying.
I always read poems aloud to get a feel for the rhythm as well as the symbolism. These flowed well. I especially enjoyed her take on various classic fairy tales.
I was impressed how Christina Sng was able to distill ideas into their essence and then translate into minimal words. It may look easy from the outside but I am certain it takes great skill.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
I'll be honest, I didn't get most of these poems. A lot just felt like words being flung at a wall in the hope of achieving something that pretentious people would call clever. One whole section was just fairytales being badly retold in about nine words. Another section was sci-fi (titled The End) but there was only the most tenuous links between poems even though they all seemed to somehow relate to humanity leaving Earth - it was like they could have connected to form a narrative but didn't.
The Gift was the only poem in this I kinda liked.
Overall, yes this is a short and easy read. But it's also confusing and frustrating by virtue of the fact 99% of it is just random words flung together with no sense at all.
Poems in a book
Just a few verses each
But can contain the universe
Deep thoughts
And quick flashes
Tasty and fleeting
Living, loving, reaching
Holding the moment
Letting go of the future
Poems in a book
Emotions in ink
Life on paper
Finding out that I've only read 3 books of poetry was very disappointing, so I decided to do something about it and found this book on NetGalley, so I thought it was my cue; apart from the fact that I was fascinated by the cover.
As for the book, I was surprised at how short the poems were. I don't know how to feel about it. Part of me, felt confused because I didn't understand and the other felt like I was reading tumblr posts.
I think it's going to be a read I'll forget in a few months.
Thank you to Interstellar Flight Press as well as NetGalley for allowing me to read this collection before its release in exchange for an honest review.
There were some pieces I really enjoyed in the collection, I just found myself wishing the book was longer. I understand the short poems in order to go forward with the various groups of subjects the author wished to cover, but I still wish there’d been more for me to delve into with this book because I throughly enjoyed the writing and would be interested in reading other collections she has written.

BUYING ADVISORY: MS, HS - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW
Sng organizes her poems into a few sections, including childhood tales, ghost stories, and the end. These short poems invite readers to think about ideas differently.
The majority of the poems were choppy and didn’t make sense to me. There were a few based off of fairy tale themes that were fun and some clever lines, but I didn’t understand most of the poems.
The violence rating is for use of the words “murder” and “kill order.”

This one just was not for me… I think it’s the style of poetry that didn’t work for me but I also just had a really hard time understanding the poems. The subject matter was great but it just fell flat for me overall!
Review of The Gravity of Existence by Christina Sng.
This is an amazing poetry book, mixing emotions with fantasy. It has a great representation of both feelings and supernatural creatures.
A great poetry book that I highly recommend!
I am giving this book 4 out of 5 stars!

I'm not a fan of poetry as most of the time it goes over my head. I'm glad I could grasp most of the context in this book though. The Gravity of Existence is a quick read with simple poems but has thoughts I have never explored before. I liked the different takes on fairy tales mostly. I enjoyed the contrasting topics the poems are separated into. I haven't read anything like this before.
I definitely recommend this collection of short poems if you are a beginner to poetry.
I received a copy of this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Some of these made me think, some of these made me laugh, and some of these made me want to write.
I am so impressed with Christina Sng's ability to write a scene so full of emotion and action with so few words! She is writing short form poetry that is also SciFi/Fantasy, and doing so without it being convoluted or confusing. I read this book twice in a glorious row, and the second read shed even more light, or dark in some cases, on the words that she has so artfully woven together. I was already a fan-girl of Sng's, but this has deepened my love and appreciation of her work!
This entire collection was breathtaking. Each and every piece felt so immensely personal that I can’t help but feel tied to each one. I love this novel and the author shows much much more than simply promise in the field, but rather a future of top charts.
