Thank You NetGalley and Arcturus Publishing
I just reviewed The Sign of Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Alex Woolf. #NetGalley
A fantastic abridged version of the classic Sherlock Holmes novella The Sign of Four, that captures the narrative and spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work brilliantly. The Sign of Four is the second Sherlock Holmes story to be written (A Study in Scarlet is the first, and is also available in excellent abridged this series from Arcturus). Here we see Holmes and Watson's working relationship grow as they tackle another exciting case, and it is actually in this case that Watson meets his future wife Mary Morstan! Mary seeks Holmes' help when she receives a strange summons from an unknown "friend" who says that she is a wronged woman who deserves justice. Soon, they are plunged into the dark secrets of Mary's father's past as an officer in the Indian Army, and it transpires that Mary is the heir to a portion of a hidden treasure discovered by her father and three of his companions! But before Mary can claim it, the treasure is stolen and a murder takes place, A thrilling boat chase on the Thames follows...but will they be able to recover the treasure?
Although The Sign of Four is much longer than the short stories, this book does a great job of condensing the gist of the novella. This book includes cartoonish illustrations that capture the main plot points nicely and will be sure to an extra layer of entertainment for young readers as they follow Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in unravelling the mystery behind Mary's father's past and the hidden treasure. This entire series is an excellent introduction for kids to Conan Doyle's classic stories, and will hopefully inspire them to read the originals as well one day! I will certainly be recommending these books to my younger students as the natural next step from the Famous Five and Secret Seven books.
